Programmers! Can you explain the stash thing to me?

I just hobby around with game design, I’m not a legit programmer. But I can’t figure out what use or advantage there would be to loading everyone’s stash in an area? Can anyone explain to me the use case for this?

Context: Apparently this is why we cant have additional(gem) storage, because it would add to the memory overhead when you load every other players stash.

The real reason is because they plan on monetizing the stash tabs… it’s pretty simple.

They say it’s to prevent item duping.
I call it Bs. PoE only has ONE stash tab that is connected directly to the server, the Guild stash.
Other than that, it does not load your personal stash to others.
It’s just lame coding.

Ho boy, you think folks with real programming/development experience are gonna respond? I stopped comp sci at Pascal and C and I would never deign to judge something as complex as this. But by all means, throw this out to this legion of knowledgeable programmers that is the D4 forum…

So you can see other peoples loot duh

Ya thats all I could come up with too. Like its some sort of block chain thing that can be verified against others. I just thought that was too much of a stretch.

either monetize, or reward additional stash tabs in the gamepass, as an incentive to play the season - in order to maintain engagement and more cosmetic purchases.

So it’s either for direct monetization, or monetization with extra steps.

its complete BS. None of it is true.

As the above post said, its because they want to monetize it.

Some POS accountant or something said to an exec, "Hey, every stash we add costs us 5 cents a month per player. Thats 300 thousand dollars.

And the exec said … “WHATS THE ABSOLUTE SMALLEST STASH SIZE WE CAN HAVE WITHOUT THE PLAYER BASE QUITTING?”

To be clear, I expected stash space to monetized out of the gate and im shocked it isnt lol. I just wanted to understand the reason for needing to load every players stash in the area.

Impossible to say without the background information, how and why they implemented the current solution. Anyone who claims otherwise is just assuming.

I don’t mind paying for more stash tabs if it’s needed. I’ve done with PoE because there is a ***ton of items and the stashtabs are really well made.
If they wanted to monetize stash tabs, they could have done it in a different way.
And btw, they wanting to monetize the tabs has nothing to do with loading everyones stash tabs in the area.

Just immagine the chaos when going to the city and everyone has 10+ stash tabs full?
Damn game is going to break. xD

it could very well be a multi-dimensional issue.

That they want to monetize is the core issue, and that it is hard to change due to programming complexities can both be true.

But, no way is it so hard that it takes multiple seasons to fix, with their resources.

Even if it’s hard, it could be done next patch or two if they devoted enough resources to it.

if everyone quit, I bet you they’ed have it fixed ASAP.

I think it’s because the time spent managing the stash is factored into their time played equation. More of an indirect monetization, but the end result is the same.

What i was saying is that the excuse that they load all stash tabs is a blatant lie.

Its so they don’t have to say “we need to charge you for them”

I second that, I’m a software developer and without context it’s pretty hard to guess what’s the reasoning behind it.

We have no idea what is their intentions with trading in the future, might be because of that.

Right, but even so, wouldnt you only need the other players inventory? Not the stash?

EDIT: And even then, just THAT player, not all players.

If they want to implement trading, it’s an easy fix.
Just allow players to set said stash tabs to private or public with private being standard. No?

why would they load everything in the stash and not just load inventory?

If they program the game correctly, and switching items from stash to inventory is not exploitable, then you only need to load in whatever item is dropped into the trade window.

Thats 0 items preloaded EVER - and only specific items dropped into trade window.

Its a total lie. They couldn’t be that inept.

We can only speculate.

I really cant fault you for thinking that… it just doesnt make any sense.
