The current implementation of potions is kind of incredible in how awful it is for this style of game. It’s copying the “soul-like” style of limited potions but with effectively free refills without understanding why that system works in that style of game. Instead of Dialbo II’s system where you could actually stock up on potions, or DIablo III’s system of them being functionally unlimited and on a cool down. We instead get the worst of both worlds. Potions are functionally worthless as items, but they are also vital. If lady luck doesn’t consent to smile and enemies stop dropping them, you have to go through 2 loading screens to click on a vender to get something back that is functionally free.
Clearly someone on the team knows this is an issue; because the only way bosses work as-is is to have them arbitrarily drop potions like they’re over-loaded walking home from the health potion keg party for no explainable reason.
Not to mention this system is extra dumb for solo players; where-in you don’t even have the excuse that “oh well they can’t refill automatically! What if you’re in a boss fight and someone rezes you!”.
Just have the things refill over time or something.
Of all the many things worth complaining about, I don’t think the potion system even makes the list.
Many games use various mechanics to help player sustain through boss fights. Sometimes they introduce adds you can use to refresh, in D4 bosses have tick marks for potion drops. I definitely would NOT prefer your suggestion of potions on cd, I hate those in a fast moving ARPG.
D2’s system regarding potions was good to you? You might be the first person I’ve seen here that liked that aspect of the game. People praise the items post-LoD, but you’re the first I’ve seen to praise the potion system.
Did you enjoy having to put them back in your belt when you died too?
Why should they copy either?
Neither games are going away.
Pretty easy to find potions. Are you clicking interactables? They almost always have potions. I never go back to town just to go to the healer.
Sucks to suck. Were you expecting infinite health or something?
I’m not understanding.
Are you struggling with potions?
Honestly?
That’s what Diablo immortal does and I don’t think it feels as good.
Did I say “difficult” anywhere? No? Right: I said it was DUMB and FRUSTRATING, not “hard”; these are not the same things.
So what’s so bad about it?
Are you unhappy that it’s pretty hard to run out and you’re finding it too easy?
You can’t explain something to someone who doesn’t want to understand. Nice post op.
When you have a mountain of little things wrong, the little things aren’t so little anymore.
I like that its different…
Its going to make me a worse diablo 3 player thats for sure.
Its way better than D2’s system. D2 and D1 have the worst potion system in the series.
I really don’t understand this complaint at all. Potions have never crossed my mind as an issue whatsoever. I play a sorc and I never run out or even leave a dungeon without being full. They’re everywhere.
D2’s system was truly awful. Potions don’t need weight beyond them being a limited way of healing (whether cooldown or numbers).
I honestly think it’s better than both systems and the best of both worlds. You have a limited pool, but can spam a bit if you have an awkward spot - and you can regularly replenish while playing. If you REALLY need to, you can click a button in town.
I mean, they pretty much act like you want them to - they are everywhere! Floors at the end of dungeons are filled with them from what I remeber.
I actually think the potion system is the best part of the game.
The potion system is one thing I really like about D4. One less thing to jog for in inventory.
Ahem, to reiterate from the OP that you clearly did not read:
WHY, do I have to go through TWO loading screens in order to refill ra resource that is free, if enemies just happen to not drop the usual endless supply that they do normally? If they drop so many, why bother having them drop at all; and just have the D3 system of unlimited potions on a cooldown?
Diablo 4 wastes enough of my time already without this additional one.
I actually think you make a good point.
Personally I like PoE potion system the best.
You get potions that have different qualities and do different things just like items, except they are unlimited and refillable just by slaying monsters.
PoE Potion: Heals and grants 40% speed for the duration of the regen
Drink it then it becomes empty
kill monsters and it fills up.
This avoids the problem you are stating that monsters have to “drop” them.
Basically, I agree with you.

drop potions like they’re over-loaded walking home from the health potion keg party for no explainable reason.
I just want to say thank you for this line

Ahem, to reiterate from the OP that you clearly did not read:
WHY, do I have to go through TWO loading screens in order to refill ra resource that is free, if enemies just happen to not drop the usual endless supply that they do normally?
Because you’re not managing them properly?
Wait a minute… that would be “you” and not the “game”.
Sorry the game contains a mechanic you don’t like.
Let me know when you design and release a game half as good as “Diablo 4” and I’ll be happy to give it a try.

Did I say “difficult” anywhere? No? Right: I said it was DUMB and FRUSTRATING
What do you find dumb or frustrating? They drop pretty much all the time, multiple potions at multiple points during boss fights too, and you get nine which is a lot.
The only times I actually ran out was during Astaroth boss fight in my first playthrough and the first time I fought butcher, which would have easily been fixed if I had farmed renown to unlock more before rushing the story, or if I actually got gud. Both times I ran out were before I farmed renown to unlock more potions.
The potion system is forgiving enough that I never actually die from running out, but from taking burst damage, but demanding enough that I actually look at the number and move around the battlefield to refill them.
If there’s one thing not wrong with this game, it’s the potion system.
So now we’re complaining about potions?
Lol wow
