Post-patch Basic Skills and main resource

Druid level 44 here, leveled up from 38 to 42 just before patch, exited the game to get the patch, and then back in and leveled to 42. All done in dungeons, World Tier 2. (Also have Lv 73 Barbarian doing nightmare dungeons, with mostly the same problem regarding generators.)

IMO the patch did nothing. I’m still just whacking away at mobs like I’m wielding a pack of wet toilet paper after blowing all my resource, and I spend way too much time doing this.

The problem with generators seems to be two-fold: (1) they are boring; (2) they don’t generate enough when it is the only generator you have, i.e. when other skills are on cooldown and there aren’t passives available to give you resources, either through skills or aspects.

And when that happens, combat is just whack-whack-whack-whack-whack. The patch did nothing to help this.

To use an analogy, the problem isn’t that my car isn’t fast enough; it’s that it takes 30 seconds to go from 0 to 60kph, and that makes it a boring and horrible experience.

IMO something focused on these situations is what will solve half the problem. For example:

  • Basic Skills (innately) generate +100% resource when you have less than 50% resource.
  • Basic Skills make the next Basic Skill within 1.5 seconds generate +100% resource.
  • Maybe just remove resource decay and give out-of-battle passive generation for the earlier levels, when we still don’t have access to the more elaborate sources of main resource generation?

Maybe these examples are bad ones. But I’m sure there are ways to eliminate these boring situations, which can often happen amidst the heat of battle. They are a big let down.

The second half of the problem is that they are boring. Even if they generate resource fast enough, they are still boring. I don’t necessarily think it’s good design to build them into the damage rotation, because that could be more annoying than fun. But Basic Skills being good for nothing but resource generation, and being among the most inefficient and boring ways to generate resource, is the problem.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I know giving us 1 extra main resource each time we whack on a mob is not going to solve the problem.

Agreed about it feeling like nothing changed. I don’t think anyone believes they’ll notice 1 additional resource from their basic. Even if they over-corrected and made generators give 3x the amount of resources they currently do, it wouldn’t buff “Generator-only” builds, and would only make builds that need to use them for resource gen feel more fun and responsive.(I think?)

I enjoy this game but dang if skills in D3 don’t feel so much better in many situations.

Wet Noodle generators don’t really make sense
I liked Lost Arks implementation of magi

You had Normal skill Magic and Generator magic
Generator Magic was some insane OP skill so it always felt great building it up

In diablo 4 that really isn’t there

IMO too.
83 druid, +1 spirit on generators feels more like an insult than a buff.

Tbh think a big part of the problem is that the more boring skills tend to be generators as well

Also Druid gens are really dreadful compared to other classes, it’s the melee generators that hit slowly being kinda the problem… As opposed to Rogue which feels totally amazing in a way (in fact I’m using 2x Gen on Rogue, it’s amazing to zig-zag between Puncture and Blade shift, you should try it  )

Perhaps it’s the class itself tbh, they maybe could make some difference in the way how Druid plays (say the more spirit a Core skill uses the more damage it does up to a certain max, but also allow them to be cast with “not enough spirit” but deal less)
