Last night, I got disconnected during the live maintenance and was unable to login to my main character. The black loading screen would start and boot me right back to the character selection screen. Creating a new character and loading in worked just fine, however. Which meant that it was likely more so a bug problem as opposed to a server issue.
As some people suggested in the forum posts, I tried dropping the world tier back down to 2 and 1, but the problem persisted (finished campaign and capstone dungeon for unlocking tier 3 already). So instead, I went into my newly created hardcore character and dropped the world tier from 2 to 1, logged out, and successfully logged in with my main!
This isn’t a permanent solution by any means, nor do I believe it will fix the issue for everyone. But definitely try it out. I’m playing on ps5 console, if that makes any difference whatsoever.
Man, you’re a life saver! Got stuck with a specific character on a loading screen, others chars loaded fine. Logged in with my Rogue, changed World Tier from 2 to 1, relogged on my Necro and it worked!
This fact doesn’t change that Blizzard instead of eating cake during work hours should fix constant in-game freezes which can unstuck in a couple of seconds, minutes or only Task Manager would help - depending on your luck. Also - this problem with specific characters not loading is pretty wide-spread, found lots of topics both here and on Reddit. But only this solution worked for me:) I’m on PC.
