Polygon Interview

You can really spot the kids who don’t work in the corporate world in this thread.

Let me break it down like a fraction for you children. Class is in session.

Rod does not care about the “direction” or “quality” of Diablo as a franchise. Period. To think otherwise is just stupidity.

What he does care about, what his boss papa Phil rates his bonus on is the PROFITABILITY OF THE DIABLO FRANCHISE.

Believe that he got a big bonus check this Christmas for season of the spirit born. Not because it was a good direction, or that it was quality, but because it moved units. Generated revenue and that is how success at that level is measured.

If you want to be mad at people it will be Big Rods leadership team (people who report to him) who are the most involved in the direction, quality and design of Diablo going forward. They pitch any number of seasonal ideas, DLCs or other content updates to Rod. He likely vetos or approves based on the profitability potential. Not necessarily because they are good ideas to the players and fans.

Diablo is a business. Simple as that.

Exactly. Y’all should fire yourselves from gaming because you bought this trash for two decades now.

Nah, they got that Microsoft money now… shareholders are of no concern either.

It’s just another tone deaf comment by this guy .

We know that’s not his philosophy on making games - it’s pretty clear Rod - your number one priority has ALWAYS been “get it shipped “

That’s the problem.

This is how big corporations work in today’s world. They could release a great game that makes consistently good money for many years but that isn’t what guys like this want. They want that fast short term big gains so they get their bonus and keep their job for a month or two. This is why the game is manipulated to drive certain metrics rather than using common sense and learned lessons from the past. If he doesn’t produce they will hire someone worse who will. Even huge losses haven’t stopped the insanity in some of these large corporations and it will only get worse.

Yeah, “meet the deadline” to make me look good and pad my paycheck. “Oh, and make sure the expansion shows the SB is a huge success by making it so overpowered everyone will have to play one.”.

Well his job is the video game… so…
You arent asking for a target employee to be fire over a video game.
You are asking the producer of a video game to get fired for his product.

“this community I tell ya!”

just transfer this Rod fella to Microsoft Word or Excel or whatever, and appoint the director/producer of Age of Mythology to helm Diablo 4.

Just Rod speaking like a CEO that has no idea how to make a game with a legacy. Pump 'em out. That’s all there is to it.

D3 is actually fine when it’s a good season - not for ‘gaming’ per se, but for keeping my brain occupied as I listen to lectures or interviews.

I’m thinking of getting D2R - but I’ve been saying that for years. Pretty sure it’s just a polished D2:LoD, so it should be fine.

D:I was free, so you can’t be including that.

I’m pretty sure there’ve been some decent WoW expansions… TBC & WotLK were pretty solid, and those were from the last 2 decades. I didn’t play any beyond that. I heard Classic is good, too.

I’m pretending like your comment is sincere… but there’s barely any meat on the bone.

Brilliant response you’ve convinced me!

Hahahahahahahha!!!

Whew…thanks for that

I saw a player (in the new game the name is not allowed to be spoken out loud) “100purrcentBlizzRod” approaching a small but vile statchel rat. After 5 dodgerolls he got hit and died… with the monk class. :see_no_evil:

Statchel Rat - Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That :rat: ← pewpew

This is kind of silly. Many companies doesnt agree with that philosophy.

And for good reasons. It rly depends on the ppl working on the company and how big it is.

Take apple for example. Steve jobs pushed things to be out in time. U could say it saved apple. He pushed the staff to work harder and not sit around and released products before anyone else.

Some ppl need to be pushed. Others will push themselves. Blizzard was a company which pushed themselves to be rdy. Nowadays blizzard is such a big company that if u dont push alot of ppl sit around drink coffee instead of working.

Ppl are more efficient under a bit of pressure. Smaller companies especially those with less money push themselves more as they need to. At bigger companies alot of ppl just do what they get paid for.

Obv its more to it and its something u could discuss further. However saying someone should get fired for one view is silly. As there are legit arguments and reason to it.

Blizzard is totally different from what it was and the industry and market changed. Sticking to something old just because “thats how it always been” wont get u very far. Many companies died because of that approach.

Im sure that u also seen the ppl shout that blizz should fix this and that and that they not working fast enough. Obv blizzard could say its rdy when its rdy to them but is it a good approach?

Ion is worse that Rod. Change my mind.
