I really enjoy playing everything about this game except tempering. Typically I’m having lots of fun and then I a great drop happens and I’m really having fun, then I try to temper it and in 7 tries don’t get a 1 in 4 temper because the same one rolls 5 times in a row, and now I’ve gone from having fun to feeling like I should delete my account. This happens all the time. I would enjoy the game so much more if there was no tempering.

I’m OK with tempering on some level, but let me pick the stats I want. The RANGE of each stat chosen can be RNG, but to have both the stat and the range be RNG just breeds frustration.

This happens all the time, and it feels real bad. If I could at least pick the stats I wanted, then I could roll the dice in trying to get a good roll.
It would also be nice if we could reject the most recent tempering roll, like we can with enchanting. If I don’t like what was just rolled, let me keep what was already on there before.
At least we’re getting tempering scrolls. That’s something.

I think it should rotate the recipe.
It picks a random one. Then it goes to the next and goes back to the first one.
Best roll is first temper gives you the right one you need. It maybe a lower roll. But worst case is you get the wrong one and you have to temper 3x more times to get the stuff you want.
So if the max temper retries is 6/6, there is always a guarantee you will get what you want even with a min roll. But if you go beyond 4/6 then that’s on you.
There are 3 or 4 tempers I’ve come across, that for me almost never role. For example two in particular are “Damage per dark shroud” for Rogue, and “crit damage” (used for sorc). With both of these, I’ve probably gotten that temper to come out 5 times out of 100 attempts. I don’t understand how anyone finds this fun.
Would it be fun if one of your items randomly just vanished once every week so you would have to go out and find another one? I really hate the attempt to shoe horn in the sitting down at a slot machine experience into this game. I also don’t like but accept the mastering working randomness on every 4th upgrade. It’s not fun to spend an hour at the blacksmith rolling / resetting / rerolling.
One I keep missing on everything is lucky hit freeze chance.
2nd is crit damage for sorc.
3rd is shadow or poison damage on my source to get 4th tal stack
Absolutely no problem with crit damage for my sorc. Most of the tempers I have received crit strike damage temper, pretty soon I received it in max roll. My staff is having altogether 501.5% crit strike damage with no GA on it. I feel I don’t need to find GA staff with lower temper roll as it wouldn’t beat this perfectly rolled non-GA
just logged in to say that me and a friend quit playing diablo 4 since they introduced tempering.
getting great drops should be the RNG factor. you get a good piece, your brain makes you happy. but with tempering, you loot a great piece, your brain makes you happy, you temper it, you brick it, you suddenly become disappointed and sad and logout.
why first send positive signals to the brain when looting stuff to afterwards change into “man i have so bad luck… this sucks… item bricked now”. give a child a toy and then take it away again. psychological nonsense, totally unnecessary.
and yes, in an arpg, to get good drops should be the only luck / RNG factor. not another SLOT MACHINE on top of it. what happened to arpg loot and itemization here is unbelievable for us.
every season i watch out for diablo 4 news if they maybe removed this tempering pseudo crafting random stuff to jump in again for the great smooth gameplay feel, but well. i guess this wont happen

Please remove tempering from the game completely. it ruins the loot and has never been good

I’m fine with it.
If I brick any item, I just loot hunt for the item I bricked. Gives me more of a reason to continue to play and do other things.

Sure, bring back loot 1.0 tempering wont exist.
Tempering also doesnt ruin anything. You had a 3ga 3/5. It was a trash incomplete item which you dont know if its good until you complete it.
Im surprised youd want to remove a system that has such a high sucess rate of getting what you want.

The GAs should not be on drop.
They should be item potential, and we could use crafting to do the rest.
Agreed. At this point of the game since it has been out awhile now, I don’t see why people can’t pick their own tempering now.

When I temper it is because:
- I got a piece of gear that is a clear upgrade
- I got a piece of gear that might be an upgrade
If I really need the gear than the affix is more important than it’s stats. If the affix drops, even if the stat is low than I accept it and move on to the second affix. With 14 attempts (with a scroll) I have “always” gotten what I need. I have never bricked a gear using this method.
If it could be an upgrade than I will take a chance on re-rolling a low stat on an affix I need. If an affix drops and you decide to re-roll you must accept the consequence if it bricks. I have bricked items using this method but in this case I already have a decent piece and I was trying for a slight improvement.
Beware: People did not like the old system and people do not like the current system. If there is a change made than people will not like the new system. BIS gear will always be hard to come by. The current system allows you to come close.
