I really don’t like the D4 Druid’s body type. I love the armor theming, but it feels very strange to have him as a “big man”. D2’s Druid is one that holds a particularly special place in my heart; I was a kid with red hair, and I got picked on a lot for it. So having this awesome, cool character who just so happened to have red hair, was a boost of confidence I sorely needed.
As such, it became a character I was deeply engrossed with, and it made me a huge fan of the Druid class.
The D4 Druid being just this big, large man, it feels like it disconnects from that “fantasy” the D2 Druid represented. Where the Barbarian is “the biggest, strongest dude around”, the Druid felt a little more “normal”. Muscular, but lean; intense, without being physically large.
Moreover, because the original graphics for Werewolf and Werebear were slightly more “humanoid” in design, I always saw the base Druid as sitting somewhere between the two; very much “human”, with Werewolf leaning into becoming even more lean, while the Werebear was built more like a bodybuilder.
Plus, given the shared history between the Barbarians and Druids, it always seemed to me that where Barbarians represented the “chieftains” of their tribes, Druids were more hunters and shamans, so having these massive bodies seems a poor fit.
The D4 Druids all being chonky bois kind of feels like a disconnect from that original theming. It doesn’t capture the same fantasy, nor does it represent that sort of “ideal” to aspire to, which is what makes the D2 classes in particular seem so exciting.
