anyone played beta on a hotspot connection, instead of broadband or such? was curious since in the future i’d wish to cut a current suscription to a provider at an address and simply do without, not having a real need for that there usally working at another address (where i’d keep my usual connection unvaried). hence was wondering if it would suffice, in case, and if someone had tried.
You want to use your smartphone as a hotspot for internet access, correct?
If that’s the case it all depends on your mobile devices network adapter and how good your connection is with your current phone provider.
But regardless it will always be a broadband connection. Dial-up doesn’t really get used anymore.
I’d suggest going to the D3 or D2 forums there as they are more likely to give you an answer. Should be a similar experience.
I play games often on a mobile device hotspot, even on the forums now and watching yt videos. It works well enough. I advise against playing hardcore over an unreliable connection though.
xeen and kazedarkwind - yes thx, but the question is rather more specific. i don’t want to know if it’s possible playing games via phone. i know, it’s trivial and of no interest to me. i want to know if anyone has played diablo 4 beta like that, and how it went. not other games.
Any kind of wireless connection is not great for gaming.
It can work in games like WoW and D4, but it does not work particularly well in MOBAs, FPS, RTS, and games where minimal ping (and packet loss) is necessary to play the game. I think this also may have to do with how much data is processed on client vs server side, but D4 should be running similar to WoW, which works fine on a mobile hotspot.
Large amounts of summons may impact your gameplay, as it probably takes more networking power to communicate where your units are as well, so that is something to keep in mind if you play a Druid or Necromancer.
You would want to look into your provider’s data plan and see if they throttle your network after so much data transfer though. Typically, even on “unlimited” hotspot plans, you will be throttled at certain points in the day if you hit high bandwidth numbers. Verizon used to and probably still throttles you when you hit around the 20-22GB range on their network. “Throttled,” is a kind word they use meaning running your connection slower than dial up speeds. I could barely load a basic website sometimes when I was throttling until the next month rolled around.
I would recommend just trying it yourself and then if it doesn’t work, re-establish the monthly services with your ISP. There are too many other variables involved (like what phone, how fast is the connection upload/download, how stable is the connection, do you lose packets, where is the phone in relation to the device and is the phone in a good area as a result, etc) to give you an answer beyond what I’ve provided.
thx spree, that’s more useful. yes idd easiest thing will be trying of course, when game is out one thing i’ll do will be that (no need to cut/re-establish the subscription at the other address yet, i will simply disconnect my pc here from the fttp connection and see how it fares on the 5g mobile one to get an idea, likely via usb tethering). didn’t know about the throttling stuff, that’s good warning there. most providers these days here offer plans for 150-200 gbs/month at 7-8 euros, so it would have been interesting hearing if anyone had already tried that with d4, to get an idea about the data, speed, lag etc. thx everybody and np anyway, we’ll see in few weeks.
I was playing the beta on my steamdeck at work using my hotspot which was getting about 50MB/s on Speedtest website and it stuttered a couple times but not sure if that was due to the servers making me rubber band or my phone losing signal at any point.
I played the Beta on a 1.5 mbps connection
Yes 1.5 not 15, not 150, 1.5. I am stuck with aweful CenturyLink at least until sometime in June or July when MetroNet comes to my area and I can finally get real internet speeds. Game played fine for me at those atrocious speeds. Only time I experienced lag that was unplayable was the last day of the Beta, but that cleared up and was likely on Bliz’s end rather than mine.
ohh, good. well considering rubberbanding and stuttering were a thing on pc too with optimal connections i figure it was more the beta itself than your phone.
I played the first beta weekend via hotspot on my iPhone while we were out camping. I have verizon. I had a 5g connection and was getting between 50-75 mbps most of the weekend.
All in all it worked quite well. There were occasional rubber banding and stuttering but I had those same issues at my house playing on a broadband connection, so I can’t say for sure if it was me or server load
I would say play World Of Warcraft. It’s free until level 20 so do some dungeon to see how that hotspot is like during actual gameplay. It’s also from blizzard so the networking should be similar to diablo. Contrary games don’t use up a lot of data. Just make sure your computer doesn’t run any other program that really eat up network.
nah thx. i’ll far more likely just wait for the release and try then, than ever reinstall anything wow related.
My home internet is 5g and it’s the best internet connection I’ve ever had. It has a dedicated modem and no data limits, but you might use up all your data just downloading the game over a hotspot.
aha yeah, depending on subscription that might be the case, i certainly don’t suggest anyone should attempt without checking first, i was more curious for my specific case than anything. in my country currently many providers are offering plans at around 7-8 euros per month which often include up to 150-200gb data for a 5g mobile connection, so not a problem.
after some posts here went to check what was the real data traffic i got on my pc during open beta 'kend so to have more precise numbers, turns out over almost 4 days d4 used not even 2gb (excluding approx 40gb of dwld of course). certainly i didn’t play as much as i would in good ole nerding times, still i played a lot (more than i will likely ever play again in any given single session, real life nowadays has lion’s share by far over gaming).
so i’m pretty sure that ending the subscription at the secondary address and replace with simply playing on mobile connection is a thing idd (in the specific case). in the end, looks like far from costing me anything, diablo is going to save me about 300 euros a year (at ~ 27 euros a month for a perfectly useless connection, since that’s more or less the cost of the ftth one i have there, that i would have never gone to check if it weren’t for the curiosity the game sparked, it’s just that).
