Petrify mechanics and specific understanding of who and what is affected by the critical strike damage bonus

“Encase all nearby enemies in stone, stunning them for 4 seconds. You deal 30%(x) increased critical strike damage to enemies affected by petrify.”

can someone explain how are bosses affected by petrify if they aren’t actually stunned due to them having a stagger bar?

do they get the effect of being “encased in stone” for the duration therefore you get the crit bonus to them?

do you need to use petrify to trigger full stagger bar therefore getting the bonus for petrify duration/stagger duration?

are they not actually affected by petrify in any way?

It should specifically state on the skill that bosses are affected even more. 50% crit and lasts for 7 seconds.

this is what it says “against bosses, the critical strike damage bonus is increased to 50%(x) and its duration is increased to 7 seconds.”

but that’s irrelevant to the question which is to do with what “affected by petrify” means in the context of a boss.

Against non bosses it actually does encase them and stun/immobilize if I remember right.

So against bosses it would make sense it adds to the stagger counter.

both of these things i know to be true and are easily proven to be true when using the ability in game.

again, i’m specifically talking about what it means to be “affected by petrify” to get the crit damage bonus against a boss. with this comment are you implying as long as petrify adds to the stagger bar i get the crit damage bonus? what about when the boss is already staggered or when i use it against an unstoppable enemy like helltide hellborne enemies or other players?

So obviously only Blizzard could answer this most likely unless you want to do data mining against the dummy boss.

But since it specifically says against bosses it does 50% crit and lasts 7 seconds then it SHOULD do that no matter if they are staggered or not. When staggered my understanding is they come under any crowd control bonuses you might have.

how do you know?

aren’t you talking about bonuses like “35% damage to stunned or knocked down enemies” or 35% damage to crowd controlled enemies" petrify doesn’t have that wording.

You may as well just go test again against the dummy. It’s the only way you’ll know, I’ve tested it and felt confident it worked against bosses without staggering them. Wording could be better but they knew this skill was useless without a second feature to work on bosses. If I had known I would have posted a video of it, but am now traveling. Or go run tormented bosses/lillith, try with and without Petrify, see which kill is quicker.

and how would i test how petrify works against an unstoppable enemy like helltide hellborne enemies?

you can try lilith or any other boss that is difficult twice with the same build and have meaningful differences in the time it takes, what you are suggesting isn’t conclusive unless i do it an absurd number of times.

This guy doesnt post anything for discussion he an angry individual who just wants an argument guys.

Just move on and save yourself the headache.

In my experience it is quite simple, against bosses you cast Petrify and then for the next 7 seconds you get the damage bonus no matter if the boss is staggered or not.

of course i hope this is true, just wanted to see if anyone has tested it in detail or has a video that explains how it works because the tooltip is rather vague.

I don’t know if any video evidence but Petrify is generally known as one of the few things on Druid that simply works exactly as is stated on the tooltip.
