People who struggle as Barb

Yeah but that requires me to go get boboles or whatever they are called right? Or are we talking about the ridiculously expensive gear vendors sell?

Requires gamba coins, but those come easy. You are farming 35 every 4 minutes or so at level 25.

skills with multiple hits seem to have a much higher proc rate. Rogue can proc OP practically at 25%

I mean yeah looking for gear with thorns and maybe + to bleed as a bonus is one way to do it while farming Events I guess.

I was hitting for 400+ AOE damage every time I was hit by any monster. I absolutely ripped through packs just by walking. The bleeds were for the bosses.

That’s pretty stupid broken I think just messing around and only relying on what I got I was at 22 thorns not including the thorns I think from flay or whatever skill. That was while still leveling.

There are also multipliers in the tree on the second wheel I think. Then there is the weapon that gives 80% thorns damage in an aoe when hit. So you absolutely shred mobs with it. Then you stack Rally Cry and Challenging Cry and GG.

To give you an example about how broken it is, that boss that attaches to you and sucks you dry while healing, was actually killing itself while attached to me.

My advice is to just stack thorns on everything along with damage over time mods. You will absolutely rip it up. Also keep in mind that there are thorn gems that you can stick in everything, so you can get a flat 240 thorns damage from that too. I think my 400 was low since I didnt enchant/socket everything.

Yes it is early / beta but my main observation is all boss fights are pretty much anti melee, with tons of AOE, lots of ranged attacks which puts melee at a clear disadvantage. Now again this may not be the case overall but it was pretty clear early on the bulk of these were range friendly fights.
As far as damage the barb is seriously gear dependent which doesn’t always lend it self well to a scaling platform like D4. I will say i could easily steam roll stuff at any level using sorcerer, so my hope is this gets addressed. I am looking forward to trying Necro, pretty much had my fill of barbarian after hitting 25.

This. If you try to fill all your slots early? You are effectively handicapping yourself even further. You start feeling a bit better around lvl 18-20 when you get access to things like shout, bubble and kick and maybe some passives like the extra health, thorns, etc.

Yes the Barb is gear dependent. But that is kind of the crux of the problem, isn’t it. They may be gear dependent but when you are in the early game you are still trying to get gear. And if your drops suck? You are as a result of bad RNG going to suffer through that early content. Then you have bosses that just are not fun for a melee barb. In particular that spider boss was a tedious slog.

Meanwhile? A friend said his brother by level 21 on a sorc has 100% uptime on a barrier that’s twice your health pool, and by level 25 can have nearly 50% uptime on damage immunity on top of that.

That’s because of Ice blades being broken and will 100% be changed by release.

I’ll go back into client this weekend and show you what I mean by setting up overpower- it’s not just the flatrate.

By the way, you just sacrificed 1 of your only 3 available skill slots for 2 utility skills. You’re free to play the game like that, but Barbs with level 25 and 70 STR and 1700 armor are going to struggle in these regards.

I would rather swop out a one of those and have a mobility/grouping tool with a nuke if I do choose ult. This is why I say ult should be given its own slot. 7th slot for ult so that we can diversity builds.

Did you take ult? If so, 2 are just large AOE nukes (that can still synergize with buffs and modifiers), but then you have 1 slot left for a “fun” ability, like kick, charge, stomp, leap…things that help you apply vulnerable, stack fortify, etc

Could just sum this up into

“Read your tooltips”

“Get good”

What? No they don’t.

I used Warcry and Rallying Cry with a bleed build and ancients.

I was dunking on things at l25.

I never have been a fan of melee characters in ARPGs but I found the Barb fun when I started getting my defensive skills. I was using Lunging Strike along with Rend and one of the shouts. Happened to get some good stats on loot and then he was fun. Problem is, the Sorc and Rogue have great damage right from the start, so it is definitely easier for them in their early levels. The barb does struggle but it isn’t unbearable IMO.

Here’s the thing; You have 2 cries (utility). I assume your ancient is hammer not call of the ancients?
If COTA, then you have 1 slot left for mobility/nuke. This is what happens when you have only 6 skill slots, and why I suggest ults get put onto a 7th slot. In a way it hampers build diversity and combat gets boring fast when you feel you need 2 utility skills (which I ALWAYS feel is needed, yes), but then you have to sacrifice one of these

  • ultimate
    -mobility
    -spammable nuke (debuffer)

this makes the combat rotation boring fast. We need that 1 more slot to flesh out that variety. Anyways, I agree with Kripparrian’s recent review in this regard at least.

PS. It’s nice that you dunk on enemies with a different approach, I’m just saying that you can put some of that utility on items and have a build with more options in the skill bar- but it IS up to you, I just dont like that it’s not up to the players to have more options there

I can understand if people want to pursue leaderboard ambitions, but I could never understand it otherwise- I don’t care what others do, or how good they have it, or what are the meta build. Only play for fun and what feels useful and fun to me. Unless there was a massive disparity so that the barb becomes a meme like Dan Hibiki, then you can just be happy and turns out Barb was the only fun class for me too. The others were too easy and too messy with supersonic AOE zipping around, taking the flavour out of combat for the most part. (And Rogue was being looked forward to, thematically)

War Cry is a damage buff, with minimal defensive/healing buffs while Iron Skin is the defensive buff. They do very different things and were both extremely useful.

I also wouldn’t consider standing in 99% of damage with little to no effect and consistently hitting for 10k+ crits as struggling at level 25. I basically 1 shot everything but bosses. So again, not sure how much you can improve on 1 shotting almost everything.

Huh? 1st char I played was Necro right at launch. I had no probs in early levels. At least not any more than any other char. Only weapon I ever gave any of my Necro’s were daggers. Yes, teeth lost power quickly, but then you got Bone Spear and started wiping mobs, and that was only a second teir skill. I almost never put any points into summons when I solo’d Necro. Best combo in multiplayer though was a sommon Necro and a thorns Paladin. That combo emptied whole maps faster than you could explore them.

You hear what I’m saying? They are still both utility skills and are literally a shout. They don’t do anything of themselves (well, they do slight dmg and stack boss stun bar).
I’m not saying we need Lost Ark 9 skill slots and crazy mobility, I just want 1 more option to mix play up and be slightly more dynamic without having every skill be a steroid. That makes it more fun long term.

Yeah, already addressed above in terms of build expression. And this will change later in the game (hopefully) and neither is this engaging gameplay, unless you have the aspect of +30%dmg to basic skills for every second you stand still.

So barbarians are defensive characters… not the juggernaut offensive powerhouses they are supposed to be (its an ARPG not a holy trinity tank/dps/heal)… and you think anyone who doesn’t like it is trying to “dumb down the game”?

It might be a scailing problem and by max level they are ok but the only effective way I found to play the barb is with bleeds, challenge shout and thorns… it might be doable other ways it just felt weaksauce.
