Penitent Difficulty is now unlocked upon completing Diablo IV’s base campaign

Just why? :man_shrugging:

Why don’t you let us switch to Penitent (or higher) during the campaign?

Expert (unchanged after PTR) is too easy to last for the duration of campaign, which will completely ruin the experience.

If you watched the VOD you would know.

The live stream? I have. And they don’t give any rationale on why to restrict it (while simultanously stating they want players to choose their own difficulty - but if you want to play the campaign bad luck!)
The video that shows level 1 character being destroyed on Penitent is missing the point. Before I finish the campiagn I will be level 50 or 60, and every enemy will be pushover waaay before that.

If you’re 50 you should be moving into Penitent. If you’re 60 you should be preparing to move into Torment I.

:man_facepalming: I won’t be able to. Because you need to finish/skip the campaing to do that. That’s my whole point of this thread.

They said you can access Penitent at level 1 if you beat the base campaign. Nothing was said about completing the new campaign to do this. Nor was removing the level 50 entry to Penitent mentioned being removed.

Basically, they’re saying “hey if you want to go in on an alt at level 1, go for it. It will be rough AF though!”

I do want to play the base campaign. And to do that I will have to be stuck on Expert until I finish it. Which means it will be laughably easy just as it was since release before all the big rework. The rework fails in this regard. Do you understand now?

If you had read their blog you would see this

  • Penitent is unlocked upon completing the final quest in the base game’s campaign—Legacy of the Horadrim—or by opting to skip the base game’s main questline.

If you have already unlocked the base campaign it should be unlocked for you. Repeating the base campaign isn’t going to lock Penitent on you.

Dude, you’re making a MOUNTAIN out of a mole hill. Stop it!

You don’t get it, do you?
What is unlocked for me as a player is the option to skip the campaign.
If I create a character and choose to play the campaign, I won’t be able to switch to Penitent until I finish it.

Why? Because some people asked for it. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. Totaly optional.

I think you have this wrong. After you complete the campaign once, you can start at whatever difficulty you want, even if you are redoing the campaign.

Grom is indeed correct. I have previously completed the campaign when the game launched. I still tinker with that original character in Eternal to this day. With Vessel and the new difficulty changes I decided to do a seasonal character from scratch and redo the campaign to see what it is like. My intentions were to switch to Penitent upon hitting level 50 or 60 in campaign to see what the loot and experience would be like. You cannot. Penitent is locked until you complete the main campaign. Infuriating. I can see no sensical reason to block this difficulty level in the main campaign.

Hi, my wife and I just started the game. We got to level 60 in act 3 by doing the campaign and side quests because that is how we enjoy playing, however, we are locked at expert which makes the game waaaay too easy, why even have mobs or even bosses at this point? So to those who are incorrectly stating that it unlocks after first completion of the campaign still miss the point of new players being locked on a really easy difficulty, neverminded being proven wrong for when you want to replay the campaign you are still locked.

I agree, the first seasonal character on expert is the best chance you have, after that, it only gets easier, and tbh, expert gets easy before its over so, yeah mind boggling tbh.
Eternal the option means nothing since a fresh character has legs in 5 minutes and will mindlessly grind to level 60 forever lol

Even chaosbane got this right :joy:

I enjoy D4 alot, but man it has some odd stuff for a arpg and video game ngl must be living the indica life over there :joy: :potted_plant:

This is so disappointing. My girlfriend and I are enjoying playing the campaign for the first time, and don’t care too much about the seasonal aspects of the game or post-campaign game. We are only in Act 2, but are way too strong to enjoy the game.

Now we are forced to blow through the campaign (the primary motivation for us to play), just to make the game more challenging. But then, the part we care about is over.

Why not just let us up the difficulty level? I don’t see any point in playing a game that I can’t lose at…

Because you are not strong enough to move to a higher level…

I agree you should be able to move to penitent as soon as you wish too period. There is no good reason not to allow it.

D4 is no longer designed for new-player experience. That went out the window pretty early. It’s designed for endgame. You don’t do the campaign for challenge, you do it because you want the story… or because you have to, to unlock the full game.

D4s dev team doesn’t understand how to profile player personas and then plan for how to serve those personas. All they know how to do is react to blistering outrage every time they poorly implement a good idea or solidly implement a bad idea.

If you want to enjoy D4 in the short term, you’ll have to keep your expectations low and practice acceptance. The future hangs on hopes and prayers.

Yep. Thats what i said after VoH relese. When i finished it and reviewed it …was insta deleted here on forums
They destroyed early and mid game completly, campaign is broken, doing all Q campaign is boring since you reach lvl 60 in A2-A3, all bosses are joke, strongholds also, some Q doesnt make sense, itemization is also broken since you reach max level and cant switch difficulty you are left with same items for many many hours
D4 is in very wierd(D3) state and has shifted to direction i dont like.

I’m reading this thread, having the same issue as OP, and it just boggles my mind how so many people seem to be missing the point.

I am also playing with my fiance and we both enjoy a challenge. Our gear outpaces all enemies and bosses and you cannot enjoy the mechanics of the game this way.

People aren’t getting that they capped your ability to increase difficulty while allowing skilled players to obtain gear that allows you to rip through everything. We may as well toss the gear and play naked at this point.

People who intend to play the campaign once (1) are simply requesting that they be able to do it at the level they can experience fun.
