Penitent Difficulty - Failed To Achieve Goal

In 2.0 PTR Patch Notes, the devs mentioned and I’ll quote “you now have the freedom to more precisely choose your challenge level.” But this is simply not the case as you have to reach Level 50 to unlock. With that said, devs should give players the freedom as stated with the following change:

  • All Standard Difficulties (Normal, Hard, Expert, and Penitent) available at Level 1

Furthermore, patch notes also mentions Penitent Difficulty isn’t for the faint of heart. To achieve that goal, the devs should double down on that sentiment with the following changes:

  • Remove Level Up Explosion
  • Add 10% Experience Loss Upon Death

And Torment 1 is locked at level 60.
Difficulties should be either freely accessible or unlockable by nothing more but feats of strength (we’re back to Capstone Dungeons or the Pit). It is important that it is allowed to change difficulties during campaign.

We can only dream, brother…

That’s not a dream that’s a nightmare.
Some kind of thing you would find in old school MMO to keep people subbed.

I don’t think Expert achieved the stated objective either.

Only the penitent man will pass!

The penitent man kneels before the devs!

You had me in the first half, you lost me in the second. Now if you got with all the idealists on this forum and made your own game I think you’d have something. If you ever do make it let me know.

I was the under impression Penitent would feel like the current transition from Torment 3 to Torment 4, so I was ok gating this with a level.

But even casuals report Penitent is easy.

I like the exp loss penalty btw. I think back in D2 it always causes me to rage quit (but I didn’t quit. I just like to smash my keyboard lol)

Difficulty locks are here to prevent leeching. You’d be seeing low levels afking in Torments in Helltide or World Boss constantly.

I even remember proposing this idea back in D3 forum and it got added. Without it low levels or ungeared characters were constantly joining public games and afking. Especially annoying in Bounty games.

Who cares about leeching? Leveling is virtually dead by decision.

It is already happening and will happen again. It’s like RMT. Leeches will be leeches.

Even if they don’t leech exp, they are just gonna leech into something else. Leveling is probably one of those things we should not worry when it comes to leeching.

I play solo mostly btw.

But that just makes multiplayer experience worse. I won’t join public torment games to be free carry service. I want to play with others at similar level.

D2R has similar issue but for different reasons like no personal loot and monsters scaling per player. One guy is farming players8 difficulty solo while 7 others afk to buff monsters for him.

Once a guy got mad at me when I joined him to slay monsters together. That’s opposite of multiplayer idea.

So how about Torment 1 entry being locked behind Solo clear Pit if you are bellow level 60?

That way you let people choose their difficulty, but prevent people from ultra leeching in higher difficulties.

Note that this still doesn’t prevent somebody from just afk leeching loot and xp in Helltide.

I think you are making boosting the scapegoat for something that ppl can do regardless of boosted or not

There is a lot of feedback on this from pretty much everyone. I think at least the penitent level gate will get changed.

Hello fellow oldie. :older_man:

That isn’t at all what they meant. What “choose your challenge level” means is that Torment 1 grants you access to the strongest items, but if you want a harder challenge you can play on any proceeding difficulty.

This goes against their “inclusive design” sentiment where everyone should feel “safe” or whatever. Making the game as bland and streamlined as humanly possible in the process.

I have another twist on this:
Each time you die, you lose the blessing of a random statue of Lilith :broken_heart: (and you never know which one).
Just imagine all the major psychological trauma among many.

I might be a super minority here but I hate this whole concept.
