PC Connection Issues (Advice, not complaints please)

The latency is making the game unplayable. I’m getting anywhere from 400ms to 2000ms. I’ve checked my connection - 400mbs down and 38mbs up

I’ve disabled all cross-network stuff.
Checked that hardware acceleration was both on and off. Neither case changed anything.
Nothing downloading in the background.
No streaming or anything in the background.
Exited discord.
I meet the minimum system settings, but I have lowered it to rock-bottom settings, just in case. No change.
I tried restarting my PC and my router. Didn’t help+
I don’t know off the top of my head what else could be the issue but this is far from a hardware issue.

Often latency issues like yours is because of intermittent (more or less…) routing issues between you and Blizzard’s servers. There should be instructions on battle.net somewhere on how to run a traceroute to test the path your packets take to blizz servers. You need the server IP number, which blizz’s support pages should be able to provide you.

Run the traceroute with said IP, and very likely you’ll see a point on the way where there is high packet loss. Contacting your ISP’s tech support and informing them of this could have more benefit to you than anything blizz may be able to do from their side, since they don’t control the various interconnected networks that make up the internet.

Back in the day, I was able to help my then ISP iron out similar issues using blizzard’s troubleshooting pages, including traceroute.

Run some diagnostics:

-For everyone having connection issues of various types: UPDATE 6-9-24

You can post results in your thread here. Maybe we can pin down what’s going on.

Actually they removed references to them. I have them (or the last known ones) listed above.

I apologize. I took a break, not expecting a prompt response!

Was there any more to that, or was that all it gave you?

Because that worst ping is pretty bad. But I noticed its at its highest in that report with the comcast server at the end. But that doesn’t mean its comcast.

Was there any other data?

Sorry, didn’t know if the rest of the table would be relevant

Just for giggles.

Do you have a way to connect and test using a cell phone hotspot? Just to see if you get a different result?

Do I have my foot in my mouth and it’s actually a hardware problem?

Definitely a hardware issue. Just dug through my junk electronics box for an old wifi card and it’s working very well. I have a feeling the new one I bought might not be working as intended.

I really appreciate the help!

Believe it or not, this is always a likely chance. I know people never want to think that, but its always best to troubleshoot an issue to be sure.

Glad you found something that helped!

And people think I’m nuts when I say WiFi cards can be problematic. :stuck_out_tongue:

Your post doesn’t show any issues there. You were getting all your packets sent back, no loss, latency looks good. That test looks good at least.

That’s insanity lol. I was getting 1600ms in game. Totally unplayable in fact. But it is odd, no other application is having issues, just Diablo and WoW.

I can try again, do you have any idea what host I should use? I’m not too versed in networking stuff so maybe I did it wrong.

Not really. Blizzard removed references to their server IPs a while back. Even their own troubleshooting pages that I used to have linked in my original thread disappeared.

I had to find new links to the tools, they removed the references to those too.

Gotcha. It’s so maddening honestly. I mean, the only logical sense is it’s my ISP or equipment right? but nothing else has any issues. Other games play just fine, streaming, music, downloads, all of it. It’s JUST Blizzard games.

It’s only a peak hours too. Which makes it seem like my ISP is extra at fault, but why isn’t anything else having an issue? lol it’s driving me crazy.

I understand.

And I get it.

The game has a serious issue with connection reliability. This has been on-going since launch. But its not affecting as many as you might think. Don’t get me wrong, it affects a LOT of players. But its not bad enough to warrant serious attention unfortunately.

I have been struggling to assist with connection issues for over a year now. I mean that thread I had with the tools I made last year!

At the same time, I also know there are things that is under our control enough that we can mitigate or even eliminate the problems to an extent.

But we have to dig and hunt and experiment and try things till we finally stumble onto to something.

There have been wild theories for awhile too. I even had one of my own. I was convinced that some ISPs were de prioritizing the Diablo IV traffic when the game launched because the signature of that traffic might have been triggering protection features with some ISPs, modems, routers, etc.

And there was some evidence to support that to a degree, but ultimately that theory just didn’t have any substantial proof and kinda went dark.

And I see new ones, like the layering theory. But I’m not jumping on that bandwagon yet, as again, proving its a real problem IS the problem.

lol
