On the Smart Loot Approach

I want to start out by saying Diablo 4 nails a lot of what it attempts and overall, is a fantastic game. With that said, the current smart loot implementation, specifically regarding uniques, leaves much to be desired. I tend to find only a handful of uniques over and over which takes the fun and desirability out of items that have historically been the most coveted and sought after.

A smart loot filter makes sense for legendaries and aspects, as the volume of items would make builds trickier without it. That being said, why not allow uniques of all classes to drop for all characters? It would feel much more exciting getting new unique drops, even for other classes, than getting your eleventh Mother’s Embrace. Additionally, finding an intriguing unique for another class could encourage players to roll new classes and experience new play styles. I think this current approach is only detrimental to the item hunt. Thoughts?

I agree. I like Diablo 2 where you can have a “find” character for the whole account.

I suppose Diablo 4 is this way because modern players will cry if they find stuff not useful to their current character. I can already see the posts “This game is crap, finding only items for other classes, can’t progress, do something, increase drop rate, kill my brain.”

Maybe a good solution would be to keep higher drop rates for the players current class, but lower them slightly while allowing other class uniques to drop.

I think best solution is to design good videogames and ignore baby cries. If your children cry about eating vegetables and ask only for chocolate…what do you do? You educate them.
Sadly game industry is always more after money. So nowday we have always more gamers with a “low game education level” and this forum is the result.

A good solution would be to just add a secondary drop table that can drop items for any class, of any tier at or below your current one, with level requirements reasonable for the tier.

Just roll a druid if this is exciting and engaging gameplay for you lol.

lol. I’d rather get Barb gear occasionally than 15 Hunter’s Zenith in a row!

As a druid needing one specific unique right now. I can’t even begin to explain to you how much I would haaaaaate for what you are asking for to become a thing. Its bad enough they have nerfed all the farms and given us no good replacements. Getting uniques for another class when it currently isnt even a thing is becoming blood boiling annoying at this point. Top it off on the terrible stash size for running multiple classes on shared stashes.

Pretty sure the only thing keeping Tornado-Wolf from being nerfed is the fact most druids can’t get the helm to build it because of the bug lol.

If this is their idea of smart loot then it was programmed by a lobotomized chimp. Smart implies it takes your current stat build and ability use into consideration. For the past twelve levels or more everything I see is for skills I don’t use and stats that are useless, or stats I don’t use at all on any piece. That isn’t including the amount of times I see Strength and Dexterity on things. It’s even more laughable to call it smart when there’s Strength on wands and staves. Because casters need Strength on that stuff. Gotta throw that spell really hard.

No it doesn’t. Smart loot just means that you get drops for your class. Taking into account your current build would be super annoying. People are already complaining they gear out too quickly and then want to farm for alts.

Why not remove the level 100 requirement on items that are found when you’re level 100? And then make that 60, which is the minimum level requirement of ancestral items that all have the same power potential.

And then have an option to turn off smart loot when you’re 100?

That would give you something to look forward to do when you’re 100. Right now, there’s nothing

Why can’t you use your character that you worked super hard on to fund alt characters, whether it be through trading or farming items? In a PVE game with trading and no end game / no competitive aspect… that’s like the entire point of getting strong and max level. I guess we’re supposed to get to level 100 and make a new level 100 immediately after that?

Or maybe when you beat the level 100 capstone would be better.

Though if it’s an option, maybe just make it an option all the time.

The issue of smart loot is intrinsically tied to that of open trade.

In Diablo 2 it makes sense to not have it because of unrestricted trading. When you find an item for another class you have the choice of keeping it for an alt or trading it for items you want. You can still get excited, because it allows to buy the stuff you can use.

With limited trading, like the one in D3 and 4, that method of obtaining loot goes out the window and is compensated with a less fun (in my opinion) method like smart loot to compensate for that.

smart loot sucks, it exists cuz people dont want to grind, and we cant trade anymore due to people using 3rd party sites excessively.

Smart loot is one of the prices we pay for other peoples lack of will power.
