Now that it's out... What's the point of the "seasonal" character, really?

As the title says… what’s the point of a “seasonal” brand new level 1 character?

The characters call you “the Wanderer”, so it doesn’t even look like canonically we’re not supposed to be a new person in the world. All of the stuff we worked hard to unlock is locked again (no skill points, etc…). So… just a questline, which might have been a more fun way to continue to level (currently level 80 on my main) with a narrative instead of grinds.

I’m not opposed to new characters but why force this if there’s really no point beyond slowing everyone down with a baseline character again?

Seasons are there to encourage you to roll a new character and build it with the new seasonal mechanics or gimmicks. If you don’t want to reroll, then don’t. This is what happens in ARPG’s. It is normal.

I would have actually preferred uncovering the map and finding altars again.

Or at least give you the option to do so, giving you a buff to something or maybe opening up a seasonal chapter reward? I dunno. It is not something that I would want to do again, but I can see the appeal.

This. Whether it’s Diablo 2, 3 or Path of Exile ARPGs always have some sort of season or league to encourage players to make new characters and start from scratch, often introducing new items (sometimes exclusive to season until the season is over), balance changes, viable builds, and gimmicks (some good, some not) exclusive to seasons.

This is an ARPG thing and will always be an ARPG thing.

I was curious why we can’t use any character we want. With the way it works now, I can’t play any of this new content with my main that I’ve spent most of my time on. I created a new character for the season and it gave me an option to skip the main campaign and go straight to the new content. If you can do that with a new character, why can’t we do that with our other characters? I’m not someone whose into creating dozens of characters and making a new one just because my main can’t experience the new stuff makes no sense to me. What’s the reasoning behind locking out mains?

People saying “it’s an arpg thing” aren’t necessarily wrong but they’re missing a key reason WHY it’s an arpg thing.

The whole point of seasonal resets, besides new little gimmick, is resetting the economy. If things never reset, items would eventually be valueless and getting into the game from scratch would be difficult. However, d4 has no economy because there’s essentially no trading.

Tl;dr resets are kinda pointless in specifically this arpg.

The whole point of the season is to keep you logged in, it has nothing to do with gameplay.

Correct. Give me new content for the beloved sorc (Somchai!) I built, don’t force me to reroll - that’s screwy.

I get the encouragement… and have no problem with it, especially if it’s optional. But why can’t I continue the story on my existing character as well. Why am I FORCED to start from scratch?

Narratively, I feel like my main who’s completed the main story is more connected to the world and as the “hero” I get why an NPC in need would seek them out. Not some random lvl 1 nobody.

You’re not, you can stay on Eternal, seasonal items don’t last anyway. Like these malignant hearts will be gone when season 2 rolls out.

So you’re not really missing much. Starting as a level 1 nobody isn’t season exclusive, are you saying you wouldn’t make an alt to try out a new class and new builds? Because, narratively (although, if you skip campaign you could argue people already know you, cuz by skipping campaign the game implies you saved Sanctuary), you’re a nobody?

What they’ve always been?

I wish seasons weren’t a part of ARPGs. I understand why they exist, but I feel like it diverts focus from making more meaningful content for the game.
