Non-stop crashing and atrocious Blizzard support

I wrote an detailed description of the crashes and included all Fenris reports, crashing scenarios, and my hardware specs, which exceeds the optimal game requirements significantly and easily runs the game on ULTRA. The game will never lag - only shut down out of nowhere - regardless of my graphic settings.

Actions taken

  • I have turned off DSSL
  • I monitored hardware temp and utilization and it is all stabile during gameplay.
  • I reinstalled the game, updated windows and Nvidia driver.

Blizzard support:

  1. Person 1 sent me a link to a World of Warcraft forum
  2. Person 2 told me to reinstall the game and sent a link to a “page not found”
  3. Person 3 asked me to check if my hardware meets the requirements

All 3 moved the ticket to resolved after responding. Obviously, I don’t expect game master volunteers to be educated nor trained in problem solving or technical support, but it doesn’t matter what you include in terms of details cause they cannot be bothered looking up your diagnostic ID’s.

I’d rather wait a week to get a response if it was from someone qualified.

My hardware (for those interested)

  • Intel i7-14700KF
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti
  • 32 GB Ram
  • SSD 1.9 TB
  • Windows 11 10.0.22631
  • NVIDIA Game Ready Driver - 566.14

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

In the last (not today’s) campfire chat, they mentioned that they have all the data from the servers when a player experiences a crash. It sounded like they pretty much know what’s going on, but they still ask you to jump through all those hoops. Get much satisfaction/relief?

So when I hear people suggest, run this and that and send the report file. I just don’t bother. It’s like the old “take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning” - blow you off until tomorrow (expectation being you most likely won’t be calling).

Yes, it is really bad. I’ve dealt with this ever since the Halloween patch, and the issues have moved around:

  1. In the beginning it was mainly Fenris crashes
  2. After a while my entire PC just shut down
  3. Now the game just stops responding after about 5-10 min of game play. No Fenris, just a game that stops responding and closes.

Look at their clueless faces on live stream wasting our time with artwork for a game that doesn’t work. It’s like a car manufacturer talking about the new paintwork and vinyl stickers for a car that breaks down every time you turn it on.

Their customer support is in south east asia. Most of them make constant typo’s when responding. And yes always refer you back to the forums, which is comedy as they dont even read the forums. You cant even lodge a formal complaint, and if you try to escalate, they send you a warning. Honestly Blizzard has become absolute trash. They do everything they can do to save money, and to make money. Every corner that could be cut, has been cut.

Sadly, im pretty sure youll get nowhere with your ticket.

swap 4070 for another non-vidia card. from my clanmates it seems that nvidia cards are not fuly combatible with the game.

Damn your setup is close to mine it’s baffling how this is only affecting certain ppl.

Hope you get a solution soon chief

Quick question though what generation intel chip is that 13 or 14 I was told there were problems with those chips

I run amd so I’m not up to date with intel

For me, it is more likely to be related to the graphic card than the CPU. As suggested, if you have access to another GPU, even if it means lowering the resolution and quality, try it. At least, you will eliminate part of the potential causes of the crashes.

I have a full AMD system and also experiencing problems, not very often though. Not great but bearable.

While I appreciate the input, this GPU performs really well in any game I’ve played - including running D4 on Ultra up until that latest patch. There’s is no lag at all, and the crash comes out of no where. No way I’m spending thousands on replacing a modern GPU to play a mediocre game. I’m the last amongst my friends to play it anyway so if this doesn’t work, then it’s no longer for me.

The absolutely underwhelming storyline and endgame may be worth the price we paid for the game, but it is certainly not a game I would upgrade my hardware to run.

Never tried POE before but if it works like a charm in a few weeks, that’s my next step, since this game clearly isn’t working.

My PC is similar to yours and I’ve crashed more this season than any other time in Diablo or even any other game… crazy and frustrating…

your gpu is more than fine.
Are you using ultra textures? if so, try playing without the high reso pack installed and see if it still crashes

I got 4k series too with 566.14 but I’m still on Windows 10.
Had a few crashes shortly after the expansion launched and I fixed the problem by increasing the pagefile to 16 gigs

Dang, that sucks. I hope you figure out why that keeps happening to you and find a fix.

I listed out every step I took here, I crashed a lot in week 1.

I9 12900K
3090ti
32GB DDR 6600mhz
2TB NVME drive is where the game installed.
nVidia drivers: 566.14

This stabilized it for me, but with every patch there is a fear it can come back. Just check that Blizzard doesn’t overwrite your Gfx settings. They love to do this, and turn RT back on.

I think left out one thing on that list I lowered the Fog Quality also.

Currently I am pretty stable, but I did experience the Pit first pull issue this morning. Later in the day I was fine running pits. I believe this issue to be outside of player control though. They are looking into this one.

Thank you so much for the detailed step by step guide.
I tried adjusting to those settings but sadly it didn’t make a difference.
I even set all settings to the lowest possible and disabled everything until the game looked like Diablo 1.

Unfortunately, the game stability is the exact same whether I put it on low or ultra.
I figured it’s not GPU related as there is no “build up” (No lag, stutter, or other indicators that the game is struggling).

The game goes from 100 to 0 in 1 second when it suddenly stops responding.
Over the past few days, I’ve been playing various graphically demanding games with much higher spec requirements than D4, but all of them ran seamlessly.

Lastly, part of me is actually glad that the graphic changes did not work as it would then force players with powerful setups to pixelate the performance to oblivion to play lol.

Appreciate your input man! Thanks.

I am also crashing repeatedly. Was not happening prior to the Hotfix patches to fix the Elixir of Antivenom bug. Now I constantly crash, and have lost numerous Insense, and Elixir buffs, as well as starting an Infernal Horde run, just to crash and lose that too.

My hardware:

Intel i9-14900K
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090
64 GB Ram
SSD 3.6 TB
Windows 11 Pro, Version 10.0.22631
NVIDIA Game Ready Driver - 566.14

Sorry that did not help there is a few other things I can think of beyond that:

I forgot to mention I am on windows 11 Pro, version 23H2

The first would be open Task Manager and see if something called GameBar is running.
Usually this pops on if you use a xbox or other controller for anything. If it is right click and end that, I mean if you are not using a controller for the game.

I also “end task” on anything suspended and that does not look necessary like Movies, Window Widgets, and searches. Stuff that says broker or system, I leave alone.

The other thing I would tell you to check is in your device manager, see if on your network adapter if there is a setting for power management usually in details, the last tab. Don’t let Windows manage that one, uncheck the box. I do this for my USB hubs too, but that is pretty specific to how I am set up.

There is also a file in the directory where the game is installed:

Open the latest by date and scroll to the end.
It’s just a dump file for the game when the Fenris crash happens. But it gives an idea of what the memory looked like close to the crash. It will likely be internal calls listed if anything relevant.

But you can share that with support if it helps them, I imagine they collect that when a crash happens…but you never know.

And one very last thing to try and you should never have to do this, but give it a try, is in your nVidia Control Panel, at the top menu, under Help, turn on debug mode.
This will remove any factory OC on the card. When you resart the pc Debug Mode will be gone, and your card back to normal, but you can check it.
A lot of times games like this in general can have issue wtih OC’d cards so worth a try to check. But I personally don’t believe any game should require users to turn off their OC’s espcially on cards that come factory OC’d.

I really hope they figure out what the issue is for everyone going through, this, I experienced the worst of it week 1 of S6 …I know how frustrating it can be, I essentially started playing like 5 days after everyone else.

It is NOT your hardware, especially if it was working before S6. So don’t make expensive changes.

I thought they had fixed the crashes. I’ve been playing quite a bit lately and my game hasn’t crashed since last weekend. It was crashing pretty often for me last weekend. Guess I’ve been lucky.

It’s not your PC.

For some reason the disconnects have been really bad in the last 24 hours.

That’s because there’s no one cause of the crash, so Blizzard may have resolved the issue(s) related to yours.

I’m also crashing over and over and over again. This has become especially frustrating as I just moved from Torment I to Torment II. (I started late and have limited time to play ok? LOL) T1 is now far too easy, but with my current gear T2 is a slow, grindy slog. I just now crashed after the better part of an hour doing Infernal Hordes, only to die when the final council member was at about 5% health. Log back into the nearest city, no way to get back into the run, no rewards, just a giant waste of time. Yesterday the same thing happened with a Realm Walker dungeon.

There’s no point in starting anything that takes a big chunk of time when a crash is going to rob you of all rewards. I can’t progress much further if I can’t finish anything! But there’s no way to get in touch with Blizzard about this. They don’t read the forums, and they no longer care about customer service. Guess I have to stop buying their products.
