Why was that damage type skipped out on in the ultimate abilities?
Or at least have had a morph for the other ultimates like with Corpse Explosion.

But yeah it begs the question, why we have to sacrifice a legendary slot to have a shadow ultimate.

At least that’s the only thing you have to sacrifice for it.
Army of the Dead and Blood Wave both require an ability point and a legendary slot.
Hm, seems like the legendary you talk about is legendary only, not unlockable by dungeon :<
Fairly common drop though later on. Shadow Bonestorm is pretty amazing. I’ve seen people talking about how they think the ultimates are awful and not worth taking but IMO Bonestorm and Army of the Dead are pretty great. They help delete the screen when they are up and for the most part strong packs of monsters that you need them for are spaced enough in dungeons so they are back up.
I suspect that the shadow damage ult was meant to be army of the dead. Since shadow skills all can buff minions in some way.
I believe the intention was that minion builds run shadow skills.
But of course the buffs that shadow skills give to minions are so bad that bone spear is still better to run on minions
