I had some ideas that I shared in the D4 reddit a long time ago. IDK if any of the lore stuff is no longer “compatible” with D4, 'cause I haven’t finished the campaign yet, and such, but here they are:
Idea 1: Twilight Knight
Name isn’t final, but I think it gives a good idea of what this class would be about, let me explain:
There was a video where Rhykker was talking about the importance of “archetypes” and how they evolved over the history of Diablo, and he said at the end that the holy warrior was one of the “missing” archetypes, but he would rather give the holy flavor to some other class, and get a Dark Knight kind of warrior instead. My thought was “why not both?”
The idea is you have your sword-and-board knight-like character, but one that can use either holy light or demonic power (or both!) for powering up. Originally I had tought it could somehow sinergize with the Angelic/Demonic/Ancestral Power mechanic, but that has been droped since (I think), so it would be a unique gimmick for this class instead.
You’d esentially have a Knight with a dual resource type, similar to the Demon Hunter in D3, but with one resource for Light-based abilities (similar in nature to the ones from the D2 Paladin and the D3 Crusader) and another for the Dark-based ones (probably based around debuffs and curses)
I even came up with a backstory (or I guess a little fanfic :P): at the end of D3, Kormac the Templar has seen 2 things that had a major impact on his view of the world:
- His own order turned out to be evil, and there was even a sidequest to help him put them down
- Malthael -an Archangel- tried to destroy all of humanity!
So he decided to form a new holy order that would fight to prevent such tragedies from happening again, but seeing as the “holy light” isn’t necesarily a good force (as evil Tempars could use it), he and his followers stoped worshiping it, and instead view it more like a tool to serve their ends. This more pragmatic, almost cynical, view of the “light” fits well with the more grimdarky aproach of D4 IMO.
But it doesn’t stop there: this new orders (perhaps taking inspiration from the Demon Hunters that Kormac met and worked with during D3) also employ demonic power, as yet another tool, always mindful not to let themselves be corrupted by it.
This class could even get Bartuc’s Armor and Valor (unique suit of armor from D1) as high-level sets, or something like that.
TL;DR: a sword-and-board, dual-resource, Paladin/Demon Hunter hybrid.
Idea 2: Inquisitor
I picked the same name as the OP, but the idea is different.
Basically, at the end of D3, Tyrael had reformed the Horadrim, and he was terrified of what would happen if the Nephalem -who were capable of besting Prime-Diablo and even Malthael- would someday go bad.
So the idea is that this class would be a member of a branch-order of the new Horadrim: one that would be dedicated to hunting down corrupt Nephalem! (similar to how D2 Assassins are supposed hunt down corrupted sorcerers, but on steroids :P)
… I have no idea how they would play ^_^’
I think this could be an interesting idea, and even works as a way of presenting an evil Nephalem NPC that could be a cool late-game boss IMO.
Also, it’s possible to combine it with the previous idea, since that one also had a “bring down corrupted institution” theme in its backstory.
TL;DR: Nephalem police, IDK about gameplay.
Idea 3: Captain
A “leader” character who works through minions, but doesn’t summon them, and instead has a fixed quasi-party.
Imagine a class that had acces to more NPC groupies than just the 1 D2 hireling or D3 follower, except it would be more interesting than that because some of your abilities are commands and such that are “cast from” your underlings. (if you play Heroes of the Storm, think less Zagara and more Rexxar, but you can give equipment to your “pet” 'cause it’s a human.
This class could also get supportive-ish abilities like auras or shouts that affect your party, and still be viable for solo play, since they have free groupies to get value from such effects.
The Diablo universe already has a few characters (NPC’s) like this: Lachdannan in D1, Asheara from D2 and 3, and Rumford in D3, all use the title “captain”.
The logic is that a heroic individual would naturally come to a position of leadrship in a world as dangerous as Sanctuary (especially if the PC in D4 are Nephalem, which I imagine is probably the case).
