New Class Ideas (Come give your new class ideas!)

Updated my first posts with new class ideas from posters here.
Please don’t just criticize, give some class ideas. Anything goes here. Just trying to float things around until something sticks for Blizzard. Come on guys, gals and everyone!

Yes a real bloodthirsty Pirate was what I had in mind, but not a brawler but a cunning and dangerous type. One who is an opportunist yet knows when to feign retreat while thinking of a way to strike back.

That actually looks like female version of a Templar.
Nothing unexpected though since we’re already felt such a class will be used.

Rumours are shield based class is Templar/Paladin or similar archetype.
They’re leaning towards the Light instead of the Dark so I doubt they have links to fight Heaven forces. Maybe a Lancer/Eternal class with links to Kehjistan will be included in future DLC. They should be neutral against Heaven and Hell and more like a warrior archetype (like the Barb) but with shield & spear, more defensive type of class.

Would love to see a Paladin type class , Crusader maybe, would also love to see a 2nd type of summoning class. Also Maybe some time of Vampiric class or Vampiric summon class

Good suggestion. Definitely there’s more room for a different flavor summoning class.

Recent interview with Rod seems like they’re working on brand new classes. I hope some of the suggestions given will be considered or something that sticks. Come on, give us 50 playable classes Blizzard you can do it!

I am thinking we will see a Dark Knight/Dark Templar type character.

With such a large focus on witches in the game, I would like to see a revamped witch doctor. My thoughts on how it might work:
Main Aspects: Poison, Soul (Cold damage), Gristle (Physical Damage)

The Class’s unique feature has 2 parts. The first part available at level 1 is a Secondary resource gauge. you fill vials along the bottom of your screen with Soul and Gristle up to X of each. Some skills get bonuses if you have a vial of the appropriate type to consume when they are cast, they decay over time if not used.
–Maybe borrow the corpse mechanic to fill the vials
The second part is a set of effects conditional on what’s happening with your vials: when you have X souls or gristle||when a vial of a specific type is used||when a vial of a specific type decays||when a vial type has Y empties||when your vials are all full

Not a summon class, but has a tier of zombie skills, Wall/charge would be cool, a monster tether would be nice, and maybe 1 summon skill in this category.

I would have a lot of zone-based skills, where placing them and movement are really important. Examples:
Mire: push out an area around you causing a burst of damage + knockback(if gristle is available guarantee overpower). the area remains a damage debuff zone for a while
Poison cloud: Aoe that stays in place and ticks damage on enemies in the zone
Spide nest: make a zone that slows and any enemy inside when it expires takes a bunch of damage from baby spiders
Plague: target enemy gets a DoT that moves with it.
Big Bad Voodoo: you want to stick around it for long-term buffs.

Spirit skills would tend toward CC like cause fleeing, slow, and reducing damage
Gristle skills would tend to heal or fortify

If this idea inspires I reserve no claim to it.

first person other then myself that i seen who want to see a revamped witchdoctor or a new summoning class, I admit some of the witchdoctors skills in D3 were not appealing, such as the jars that release spiders, but other skills like Zombie charger, Fire bats and Grasp of the dead were such a refreshing change compared to the standard necromancer skills

This actually sounds like a nice class to play!! I like it.

I like a lot of these ideas. I like this thread. Nicer place than a lot of the threads going right now lol

Less of a suggestion of what I’d like to see, and more of what I wouldn’t. Everyone wants a holy warrior, but I think presently given the story direction any presently available orders and cultures that fulfil the armourclad light slinging sword and board character are just not great. The whole church of zakarum has basically been corrupted, or turned to certainly unsavoury acts in the name of what is holy. Paladins and templar are clearly out then. Before playing D4, crusaders I would’ve thought a great choice then, but oops they went killing swamp people for no real reason contrary to their diablo 3 lore. And now we got this other religious order being stand up citizens. Not. Course they could just yadda yadda they rejected the corruption, like the paladin in 2, to any of these options, but thats not terribly inspired. Thus I propose a split of the archetype.

Firstly, monk. Despite saying that they didn’t want to limit themselves to established orders or classes, the dev team did anyway so its got that going for it. There’s barely anything on their order’s lore, so hasn’t been marred doing evil deeds or infested with demons, and is still holy. It gives itemization options in using staves, another class that can use polearms instead of just barbs, the option for class specific weapons like fist weapons. It could also be another class that utilizes daze (blinding light from D3) as a CC option, a sort of progression of attacks only seen in druid’s shred right now, and has the potential of aura like abilities like cyclone armor and barb shouts as they are now. Could even use shields, even if only crusaders did in D3. And it would be cool seeing what we’ve only seen as an awakened nephalim, as mere mortal, even if D4 really seems to be trying to ignore D3’s lore. Course they could just come up with a new religious order if the holy part is really going to be explored, then the ambiguously named cleric is just endless possibilities.

Secondly, iron wolf. Again an established order that hasn’t seen much corruption, and this time in heavy armour to boot! Obvious shield user here, cause its weird necros are the only ones able to use them (barbarians should be able to too, even if it clashes with exclusively doubleswing. Other abiltiies requires specific sets of weapons too so why not require duel wield for doubleswing and let them use shields for other ones? But I digress). It does step on the elemental nature of sorcs a fair bit though, but it gives the option to explore more martial uses of those elements as well as enchantment which was a elemental thing in D2. Also wouldn’t require them adding a new element, like the holy warrior would, not that that would be terribly hard. And like the monk it gives a lot of opportunity to explore the known “class” in a new light both in lore and mechanics.

Both of these aren’t really new things, but I see a lot of overlap in suggested fantasy with other peoples suggestions. They diversify options already present in the game while maintaining the ability to carry uniqueness within how they operate within the currently standing game mechanics. Despite the elemental overlap with sorc, I think I rather iron wolf. Weapon enchantments would be a fantastic class ability, augmenting your base abilities chosen through leveling into a certain element (with obvious sub-themes). Shields give thorns, so would make sense to have something with that, perhaps turning them elemental (if they keep the thorns implicit and not make some unique style of shields). Could use polearms too, even if shield is mechanically mandatory like D3 crusaders, just give them an option to wield either small or big weapons, if that’s even necessary.

I think that combining the most prominent opinions of people online the class that would make most sense would be a holy, shield using, spear throwing class

would love to see a 2nd summong class

I had some ideas that I shared in the D4 reddit a long time ago. IDK if any of the lore stuff is no longer “compatible” with D4, 'cause I haven’t finished the campaign yet, and such, but here they are:

Idea 1: Twilight Knight

Name isn’t final, but I think it gives a good idea of what this class would be about, let me explain:

There was a video where Rhykker was talking about the importance of “archetypes” and how they evolved over the history of Diablo, and he said at the end that the holy warrior was one of the “missing” archetypes, but he would rather give the holy flavor to some other class, and get a Dark Knight kind of warrior instead. My thought was “why not both?”

The idea is you have your sword-and-board knight-like character, but one that can use either holy light or demonic power (or both!) for powering up. Originally I had tought it could somehow sinergize with the Angelic/Demonic/Ancestral Power mechanic, but that has been droped since (I think), so it would be a unique gimmick for this class instead.

You’d esentially have a Knight with a dual resource type, similar to the Demon Hunter in D3, but with one resource for Light-based abilities (similar in nature to the ones from the D2 Paladin and the D3 Crusader) and another for the Dark-based ones (probably based around debuffs and curses)

I even came up with a backstory (or I guess a little fanfic :P): at the end of D3, Kormac the Templar has seen 2 things that had a major impact on his view of the world:

  1. His own order turned out to be evil, and there was even a sidequest to help him put them down
  2. Malthael -an Archangel- tried to destroy all of humanity!

So he decided to form a new holy order that would fight to prevent such tragedies from happening again, but seeing as the “holy light” isn’t necesarily a good force (as evil Tempars could use it), he and his followers stoped worshiping it, and instead view it more like a tool to serve their ends. This more pragmatic, almost cynical, view of the “light” fits well with the more grimdarky aproach of D4 IMO.

But it doesn’t stop there: this new orders (perhaps taking inspiration from the Demon Hunters that Kormac met and worked with during D3) also employ demonic power, as yet another tool, always mindful not to let themselves be corrupted by it.

This class could even get Bartuc’s Armor and Valor (unique suit of armor from D1) as high-level sets, or something like that.

TL;DR: a sword-and-board, dual-resource, Paladin/Demon Hunter hybrid.

Idea 2: Inquisitor

I picked the same name as the OP, but the idea is different.

Basically, at the end of D3, Tyrael had reformed the Horadrim, and he was terrified of what would happen if the Nephalem -who were capable of besting Prime-Diablo and even Malthael- would someday go bad.

So the idea is that this class would be a member of a branch-order of the new Horadrim: one that would be dedicated to hunting down corrupt Nephalem! (similar to how D2 Assassins are supposed hunt down corrupted sorcerers, but on steroids :P)

… I have no idea how they would play ^_^’

I think this could be an interesting idea, and even works as a way of presenting an evil Nephalem NPC that could be a cool late-game boss IMO.

Also, it’s possible to combine it with the previous idea, since that one also had a “bring down corrupted institution” theme in its backstory.

TL;DR: Nephalem police, IDK about gameplay.

Idea 3: Captain

A “leader” character who works through minions, but doesn’t summon them, and instead has a fixed quasi-party.

Imagine a class that had acces to more NPC groupies than just the 1 D2 hireling or D3 follower, except it would be more interesting than that because some of your abilities are commands and such that are “cast from” your underlings. (if you play Heroes of the Storm, think less Zagara and more Rexxar, but you can give equipment to your “pet” 'cause it’s a human.

This class could also get supportive-ish abilities like auras or shouts that affect your party, and still be viable for solo play, since they have free groupies to get value from such effects.

The Diablo universe already has a few characters (NPC’s) like this: Lachdannan in D1, Asheara from D2 and 3, and Rumford in D3, all use the title “captain”.

The logic is that a heroic individual would naturally come to a position of leadrship in a world as dangerous as Sanctuary (especially if the PC in D4 are Nephalem, which I imagine is probably the case).

Illusionist - Melee wizard who conjures magic weapons to fight with. It has illusions which can do damage and also can be shattered for aoe damage. Basically the Mesmer class from GW2.

A demon could be cool. Since the politics of heaven and hell seem a bit more complex I could imagein a greater demon strike out on their own to go against lords of hell.

I’m thinking mele based (the big buff demons) with some magic and some summoning of lesser demons.

Needs a Valkyrie class.

I want the Monk to return mostly. A class revolving around martial arts and using elemental magic with strong single target and AOE damage. Their passives would grant crit and dodge bonuses and their attacks would do stuff like grant bonuses to attack speed. The class fantasy being high speed strikes with feet and fists.

Thanks!
You made a few good points, first there would likely be another shield using class but perhaps not a Holy Warrior archetype. Monk class would likely return, as an agility melee class is missing (the Rouge is more of agility dps class). A 360 degree circular leg sweep skill would be cool, knocking down surrounding mobs lol

The Iron Wolf idea got me linking it to the Kehjistan Imperial Guards (real Imperial Guards and not the D3 imposter demons) which I had suggested the idea of a lancer warrior class. They only can use spears, polearms, javalins, etc (I guess like the male version of the Amazon).

Oh yes I would like one or two more summoning class with a variety of other skills that make them different. We have a dark (Necro) and a nature one (Druid) albeit both are hybrid summoner (the Druid is less a summoning class). We might see an Elemental summoning class or one that could hire/summon Mercenaries (imagine 4 skills slots each summon a different type of mercenary that would be unique full summoner class to play lol).

Wow good ideas!
I actually didn’t use the Inquisitor name though it was a Templar/Crusader archetype I used haha. And for Idea 3, it hit me as well (see my reply just above) that we are missing a full summoner class and hey what about Mercenaries?! Put both of them together and this will be an interesting idea! Great minds think alike! :joy: Naise :+1:

Yeah, I didn’t notice until after posting that I left that part from the copy-pasted reddit post  (and then I didn’t bother editing, 'cause I’m lazy :stuck_out_tongue: )

Blizzard Knight

Keyboard warrior that accepts mediocracy (Nerd based Ranged Typing Class), ability to flame anything that offends their fragile existence. Self proclaimed specialists on what a “True ARPG” means. Takes offense to fans of the Diablo series making requests to gameplay improvement and balancing. Signature abilities include calling people “Whiners” and suggesting they “go play D3.”
