I’m lvl 97 HC at the moment and every piece of gear that can roll health has a health roll on it but they aren’t god rolls and still have quite a bit of room for improvement. Running bloodlance so the more health I get the more damage I can do and I’m safely running tier 80 nm dungeons without procing my elixir of death evasion for days.
See, to me this sounds like you counting the power of malignant hearts, which will be all gone once season is over. Not saying blight gonna be suddenly all bad but it sure wont be as good anymore. Then again, by that point might as well be done with necro and move to a next character, so it’s only an issue for people who plan to play necros after season 1.
Hmm, I don’t think Necro is exactly lacking in the viable builds department. Even though some may be easier vs others.
It would be nice if Blizzard would start testing their updates before applying them, stop breaking Necro skills and “fix” various elements of the class though.
I hate bonespear, if you don’t like it just play a different Necro spec. There are multiple Necro specs that can make it to NM100 if that’s your goal.
I got to level 100 and finished the season then did a NM100 mostly as an Infimist build. I tried switching to some other builds including bone spear and a mendeln build once I had one, but all were much more annoying to play in dungeons than just doing an infimist build with a barber.
As an infimist build you just watch the timer on your blood mist and as it is about to run out, back off and try not to get hit until it’s back up. I actually didn’t get one shot by everything, but a lot of things will one shot you at 100 no matter what your gear looks like.
Try using reap instead of bone splinters. It gives 30% damage reduction and spawns a corpse and keep bone spear for for damage
I only play Eternal.
I suggest trying the darkness build instead of bonespear, since I switched, I’ve been able to run higher nmd’s, and way more tanky.

Im not asking for the why, but for the how.
Im at 100 with barely 19k hp.
Is there some way to increase the odds of high +hp rolls on the items?
Running the mendeln ring build, solo’d 52 at lvl 75, once you get past 45 and up, if ya miss a def cd, it’s usually 1 shot and start over. Hopefully after the patch it might be a little better but I kinda like the risk/reward for higher tiers, and my gear isn’t that great. But thins is by far the best damage build I have played on necro.

Stack paragon nodes with +percent max HP. They’re multiplicative meaning every node increases your HP by more than the one before. My maxroll build plans sit at 20.5k HP as Shadowmist and 27k HP as blood.

Strictly in my opinion
NM dungeon mob levels are NM+54 in other word you are at level 80 trying to push level 94 mobs. You get most exp from mobs of your level+3 thus at 80 you get best yield (time/exp) from NM dungeons around NM30 or so.
As for “squishy” problem. BS built have number of way of solving it. For one - socket into helm, legs and chest 5 royal topaz = -50% damage while CCed. Second element is aspect or unique item in leg slot. Unique legs (which is very very common) give you 50% health barrier on-demand for 8second (just pop a portion or use tendrils to produce tones of blood orbs) or you can get up to ~6700 life barrier for 10 second every 30 second when you hit elites. Like many already mentions - roll for “damage reduction while injured” - you can get very number here and damage reduction from mobs under DOT.
If you have enough DPS try this - for the elite pack - mist in, pop barrier one way on another and use BS on prime target as soon as mist off. Also use decri aura

with BS built there are lifehacks that somewhat differ from what meta recommend 
Its kind of exploit of mist tactics and use “barrier on-demand” option with unique pants. With BS you are 1 trick pony that do require ~100% crit chance and ramping crit damage like 600+% with high base (+damage +damage core +damage bone). Idea - kill from outside of screen all trash in 1 shot
It’s not all that hard to get a working bone spear gear set.
Yes, you’ll want 100% crit chance but you get:
- 10% base line
- 5% Paranormal Bone Spear
- ~6% Serration
- 20% Bone Storm
- 30% Grasping Veins
- 4% Entomb Paragon node (Bone Graft)
For a whopping 75% crit chance plus Dexterity and whatever you have on your gear.

In reality, you want to have base line 50%
With grasping veins - you are relying on proc of heart and having at least 1 corpse ready to go - in other words you don’t have those 30-40% chance with first shot of BS (keep in mind 30-40% only if you are imprinting it onto 2H sword). You can’t keep Bone Storm 100% but you can fire it with first shot of BS thus 20% on Bone Storm also not constant. But you do missing affix “crit with bone skills” (you could have it on some items).
I think it’s pretty easy to keep grasping veins up and even more so with the heart.
If you get good crit rolls on rings and gloves you’re golden. Doesn’t even have to be max roll. The ceiling is 26% on those three slots combined and you’ll get another 5% or so from dex.
For regular mobs it doesn’t even matter if you don’t crit once in a while because they get hit multiple times anyway. Just pop Bone Storm for elites and bosses. Decrepify can help with uptime.
@DoomDrake: There’s no crit chance with bone skills. That’s crit damage.

I am pretty sure I do such affix on something but you could be right. I missed relatively high crit chance that coming from dextr. and we get a lot of it from paragon - enough to get +10% for sure. I have % of crit chance on gloves (12.5% - not sure if I can find it any higher) and about 4.5-5% from ring. So straight from gear and stats/paragon its comes … almost 50
Max on gloves is 12% and rings each 7.5%.
Without stacking tons of dex you’ll get approximately 5-6% from it. The Paragon board has 4% like I said.
I have gloves (fully upgraded) not even 800+ ip with 12.5% crit chance, 16.5% luck chance +3 bone spears and something else
