I now realize that the name of my main character sucks, and I would like to change it. Is it possible to request a name change, free or otherwise?

Coming to the cash shop probably. There aren’t unique names. You can name all of your characters the same thing. So, I give my characters subjectively epic names.
Ragnar the barbarian.
Balthasar the sorcerer.
Nicodemus the necromancer.
Suckier names for rogue and druid. 
In WoW, everyone is named Hahapwnurfacexx because of a shortage of available names.
There is no current method of changing a character name in D4. I have not heard them mention one, but you never know what might happen in the future.
WoW has been freeing up names for about 10 years now, maybe more. If an account is inactive for more than 2 expansions the names on it are automatically released. If you come back later, your char will be Miras12345 or something. You can try renaming to the same name and will get it if nobody else used it yet. If not, you pick something else. Means a lot of decent names exist now, except on the very high pop servers.
Oh well. I guess Jaeger the Barbarian isn’t so bad.
