If I recall, I think only you see that though.

Mine shows the same thing, but from another player perspective (that I have not shared my real ID with) it doesn’t.

I can see those friends I have (which are very few) that have shared their Real ID with me.

I have the same problem and my normal Battlenet friends (I dont even have any Real ID friends) can also see my full real name in the clan tab. I disabled my Real ID preference once I saw my name appear in the clan tab yesterday, but it’s still there and visible to my Battlenet friends when I’m online. Data protection support team just directed me here even though this is borderline illegal to leak personal information like this. Why is the Real ID even enabled on by default?

Well, that sounds like a bug, but its a bad one if that’s the case.

Make sure its reported in the bug section.

Just discovered the same thing, turned off all settings and my real name is still being displayed. I have immediately stopped playing the game because of this and notified my entire gaming community that personal information is being displayed in Diablo 4 in this way. I will be notifying my Twitch communities next. I don’t care who Blizzard says should or should not be able to see it, my real name is being displayed in a video game without my consent regardless. This is absolutely unacceptable in any way shape or form, period.

Ok, I have fully tested this out.

Here are the following points:

IF you are in a clan, and you have NOT shared your RealID with anyone else in the clan from your friends list, YOUR NAME DOES NOT SHOW UP ON THEIR SIDE, even though you see your name on your screen. I have tested this with my clan members and verified it.

However.

If you have shared the RealID with your friend, and both of you are in the clan, then your name may be visible to that friend.

The battlenet settings for privacy will not affect in-game settings either. In fact they have a note about this next to the privacy setting:

Settings → Friends and Chat → Hide friend’s Real ID (this only works in Battlenet and only for your friends, not you)

You can also access your profile privacy settings here:

And view the RealID information page here:

I appreciate all of the detail. However, I had already changed my account privacy settings to have Real ID disabled, and my real name is still being displayed in-game. This alone, I do not trust and should not even be a thing.

If I am electing not to have my name displayed for my personal privacy, then it should not be displayed in a video game. I shouldn’t have to rely on testing and checking with friends, and just hope that it is actually not being displayed on their end or for anyone else randomly because bugs do happen. This is not an acceptable practice when it comes to personal privacy and security, not ever.

This is a legal matter just waiting to happen in my opinion.

Oh I removed it on my account after all of this happened. But, that is not the point is it? Displaying an entire player base of names, regardless of their personal preference settings is no small deal.

agree - its a stupid mistake which shouldnt have happend

but i think its equaly stupid to give ur name to a company which doesnt need it

also i think the whole idea of “real id” is outdated by like 200years and one of the most redicolous features i ever saw a servive offering

Not sure when you did this but:

Note: Changes to this setting may take up to 24 hours to update.

This is directly from the information page on RealID that I posted above.

Well, I sure hope Blizzard puts out a notice to all players that their personal information is now being displayed without warning, and that if they don’t want that then they should make this account setting change and then wait another 24 hours before playing the game again. Solid.

While I get that it’s a sensitive issue, (and I do really understand that point) despite how it appears (seeing your name in your game on your tag), from what I have been able to tell, at this point no one else should see the name unless they are friends that you connected with using realID.

I get it though. It looks worse than it really is.

I don’t see them specifically posting anything to that direct effect. They do caution about sharing information, but all companies tend to do that in one form or another.

Should your name show up in the game while playing? No, in all reality it shouldn’t. I think this is more about how the battletag system works with displaying names uniformly in their system than anything malicious or overlooked, but yet I get why some may be concerned.

My opinion, would be to wait out the change you made, see if it updates after a day or so. If not, submit a ticket about it with your concerns. Also hopefully one of their team can provide other clarification that I have no access to or am missing.

Game on.

I hear you and appreciate your insight. In all reality, I am not very worried about myself individually and I am more concerned with the ethics of it as a whole. As someone who is a tenured professional that deals with information security at a very high level, this was extremely alarming to see for a game with an online service. I am more concerned with the mass of players who have no idea this is even being displayed without their knowledge.

I feel like Blizzard continues to make this mistake in regard to privacy. The huge debacle over Real ID back in 2010, the personal phone number fiasco with Overwatch, and now back at it again in Diablo 4. This never goes well, and it will never go well, in fact this is how investigations get started. Private information needs to be treated with absolute respect and confidence for all customers. Notice and consent should absolutely always be at the forefront of any such feature. In this case, it wasn’t.

Showing the players real name makes streamers afraid to open the clan options.

This is probably the biggest part of the problem.

I was recording a video yesterday to show how my system was handling opening menus and stuff without stuttering or hitching, and I noticed the same thing when I reviewed the video before I uploaded it. This was before all this blew up on the forum.

Needless to say, I didn’t upload it.

I have to make a new video and not click on the clan tab. :stuck_out_tongue: Or blur the existing one out.

thanks for testing and i can confirm from my own testing only i can see the full name

No problem!

I still hope they address this issue, as its not right to have your name showing in the game for any reason, even if only you can see it.

Agreed. And I don’t know why they have this possibility in the first place.
This is terrible security breach for players.
You never know who is playing with you.
They shoud NEVER EVER allow have your real name to be seen in- game. NEVER.
