My 2 cents on the new class - Spiritborn

I see many people are questioning or speculating how the Spiritborn will fit in the game while Druids already exist.

Diable 4 so far is so very much European centered. Some of the game world region may have a different style that resemble other parts of the world, but when it comes to the classes, it is very much European centric. Barbarian’s ultimate rage must be called “Berserking” instead of something more generic about rage or wrath is another example of the game being very European centric even though the game allows players to choose different skin colors for their characters. Does a black Barbarian turning into a guy from the old Norse settles perfectly with everyone? I am not sure. Barbarians in the game are basically physical warriors in an ancient tribal setting that existed all over the world in ancient times. Similarly, the concept of Druids came from ancient Celtic culture, and it is essentially an European thing again. Druids are quite interesting and very popular in online games of many different genre, but it is still a very European centric thing.

The Spiritborn, while we still need more info, does currently look like a class based on the culture from the Americas prior to Christopher Columbus. Given that they wield the power of the stationary nature and are friends with big cats, maybe some African elements can be added as well. I do not know if this is true or not, but so far it sounds like the Spritborn wield more powers from the stationary nature instead of the Druid’s power from the more lively nature such as moving rocks, animals, wind, and lightning. We shall see more on July 18.

Our world is vast and diversity is good. Approaching things from a different angel can be very interesting. I look forward to more info about the new class, and I hope Blizzard will continue to bring in more ideas from different cultures in the future.

you know eurocentric is a word

Clearly, nope. Lol. English is not my first language. Thanks!

You paid too much. Just sayin…

people also forget the bering strait is easily traversable in a small water craft with literally zero maritime experience and does freeze over from time to time during the winter

you can theoretically walk from africa to argentina

and north american indigenous populations share a lot of genetic similarity with asian steppe peoples

And this is relevant because?

greta thunberg is hilarious… she spent like 5 trillion dollars on a yacht to sail across the atlantic when she could’ve gotten a free horse and canoe and accomplished the same task with less of an ecological footprint

I guess swedes have yet to figure out the world is spherical

Were people questioning it’s inclusion over diversity? All the complaints I saw were people that wanted a different class because of their likes. I don’t think they cared for the class’ inspiration.

I agree with you. Most people do not care about this. That is the thing when it comes to diversity. Many will voice some support, but they do not really care. However, there are also players like me. This is why I put “My 2 cents” in the subject. Not a popular opinion perhaps.

Nobody really knows what the gameplay and theming is really like until they give us more info. I doubt there will be too much overlap with any existing (in D4) class. That is one of the great strengths of the current game, each class has a very distinct identity.

With a name like “Spiritborn” one would assume that there is some kind of magic/mysticism involved, but that could take many forms.

With the tiny bit of info we have to date, my mind immediately goes to a few different concepts. I would be thrilled if there was some overlap with ye olde Amazon, and/or WoW Shaman, but of course, it could be something entirely new. I’m sure it’ll be fun, whatever it is. It took me a while to find my favorite builds, but I did end up finding the fun in all of the current classes,
