Move & Interact key while Holding Position always casts what is in the Basic Skill Slot

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Disable “Combine Move / Interact / Basic Skill Slot”
  2. Bind “Move & Interact” to Left Mouse Button. Leave Basic Skill Slot unbound or bind it to whatever you like (in my case, I wanted to bind this to E)
  3. Now enable “Hold Position” (i.e. hold Shift in defaults) and left click. Your character is casting whatever is in the Basic Skill Slot (the left click slot in default config). It should not do this, because you’re not actually tapping the key that Basic Skill Slot is bound to in any way (since its is either unbound or bound to E or whatever you assigned it to, but its definitely not bound to left click).

Interestingly enough, binding “Move” to left click does not exhibit this behavior. It’s only “Move & Interact” that does this.

Why this matters? Because my desired control scheme is as follows:

  • Left Click only for movement and picking up stuff.
  • “Hold position” mode is always enabled. I wanted to set “Hold Position Mode” to “Toggle” in Gameplay settings, tap Shift once, and then have my character cast skills when I press them in that direction no matter what, even if I’m clicking the ground.
  • I want to interact and pick up loot with left click

The above behavior of “Move & Interact” does not let me do this, because once I press shift, my left click button now always casts the Basic Skill and locks my character in place. I can however do this with “Move”, but that prevents me from left clicking on loot to pick it up.

Can confirm, “Move & Interact” is not working correctly when Hold Position is toggled on.

So I had the idea of trying to get used to picking up loot with the interact key after all, and discovered another thing: going into “Hold Position” mode (be it via toggling it on once or via holding a key) simply disables all interacting period. I can’t even press the “Interact” hotkey to open doors and speak to NPCs until I toggle hold position off, and can’t pick up loot either.

I understand this might be what “Hold Position” is supposed to be by design. In that case I just wish there was an option to make skills cast even if you’re targeting the ground, particularly strike/attack type skills that hit a single target. PoE lets you enable a “assume hold” mode individually per skill.

Agreed.
What Mikle says also happens when you just use „Hold“ normally without the toggle option.

I want to play with always hold, so I don’t have to hit shift everytime I want to cast something. But it also counts for „interact“ so you can’t loot with this option on.

I would suggest to change that always hold does not count for the interact part or that we have the option to choose, if it counts for move and/or interact.

The PoE option that we can put each action bar slot individually on auto hold or not is a huge QoL.

bump.

Changing “hold position mode” to toggle is the only way to get some sort of perma “attack without moving” for all skills but it’s currently bugged because LMB is hard-coded to the 5th skill slot/default basic skill slot.

Plz dont fix this. This is the exact feature i want and it cant be done with the keybinding as they are atm.

if you fix this you must let us keybind shift + mouse 1

They ‘fixed’ this right? came back this season and no longer works. :frowning: I used it as it was too (same as it was in d3)

Yeah, seems “fixed” for me too. I relied on the old interaction. I kind of “fixed” it by binding basic skill slot to the key I want to be hold position (shift), then core skill slot to shift + right click, with right click as an alternate. Then move + interact is left click.

Unless i misunderstand your ‘fix’ though it has the issue that when you use that basic skill slot attack on an enemy, once they die you start running, when the whole point was that we want to stay still no matter what.

I actually think this is a bug and wasn’t intended as a ‘fix’ because hold position just isn’t working properly anyways. Just set it up and it’s still running when holding the binding for it.

Yeah, it’s not perfect, it’s just the best I had come up with. I’ve gotten out of the habit of holding down left click now though.

Aye, It’s frustrating as it was perfect before and a standard as far back as I can remember, over 10 years. The hilarious thing is, if I install diablo 3 I wonder if the capability is still in that game, I bet it is (as it should be).

Bumping this, this wasn’t a bug, it was a feature. You’ve still not given people who liked the way it was the option to have it that way.

It genuinely makes the game far less smoother to play as a ranged character.

You should be able to force run with left click, but still have your hold position button cast your ‘unbound’ basic skill.

You listened to people saying this was a bug, but not listening to people who consider this the most optimal, fun way of playing a fair few classes in this game, a way people played for over a decade.
