Monitor 4K vs 2K

I am considering now to replace my old benq monitor. Actually I am not ready for 4K and so I think on a 2K monitor but at the same time if I want to play 4K one day (not too long i hope) it would be pity to have invest in a 2K monitor already.
So if I go on a 4K monitor now is there a “scale” option (on something like that…) to be able to play 2K ?

Of course, this is what they call resolution, however the lower the resolution is for your monitor, the more blurry things get and textures start to decay.

It’s ideal to try and use the resolution meant for your monitor, but in cases where the hardware is not strong enough, you can lower the resolution to gain some extra frames.

With that said if you plan to continue playing at 2K, I would just keep the monitor you currently have, until you have the hardware to play on 4K and get a monitor then. 4K monitors are becoming cheaper and cheaper, so by the time you get around to getting one, you will be able to buy a really good one for a good price.

I personally still feel 2k is the sweet spot for gaming (in general). You don’t need the most expensive GPU and can pull high framerates with current single card GPU solutions. We’ve preetty much just recently got to this point wiht the release of the Nvidia 3080. If you’re staying around 27 inches with your monitor 2k is great.
I personally feel that going up in size, like to 32 inch at 2k, is not that great because quality drops off quite a bit, if you’re picky like me.
If you’re going to go with a larger monitor, might as well go the 4k route. Just know you’ll probably need a beefy GPU if you want to crank up all the graphics while retaining a decent framerate. For me personally I would rather have all my graphics settings cranked up while keeping an extremely high framerate. As I can’t stand any image blurring/ghosting. Especially in ARPG games where gear lays on the ground with floating text. I like to read clear text while moving around.

Edit: And stay away from VA panels if you are sensitive to blurring. They absolutely suck.

Forget future proofing, live a little

I work on a 27" 4k monitor, as the crisp image makes it easier on the eyes, giving that you’re sitting at arms length away.
I play on a 40" TV with only 2k resolution however, as I sit so far away on the couch, that a higher resolution wouldn’t even be noticable and just require me to throw money away for a beefier GPU and an increased powerbill to run the PC.

Thanks everyone for kind advices. In fact I also already think myself strongly going for a 2K monitor. I use a new laptop Asus Tuf (2022) i7 Rtx 3060 so I think about a Asus tuf 2k 27". It should fit well or maybe a samsung odyssey g5.

I cannot as I use it in all my career on D3 !

I am (picky) like you so I sure go for a 27.

noted!

Agree. Lets dance for 2K. Go go go !

Great explain in short. love it. Thx!

What kind of video card do you have?
If it is a higher end one I would try turning on the DSR feature on your nVidia Control panel first to see how 4K would perform on your hardware. It will be slightly more intensive than if you were running in native 4K.

If it is just for games this could be your solution to getting a monitor now. And just wait for 4k to drop to a price you like.

If you want 4K for movies and such then yeah I would get a monitor. 2K imo, and it won’t be popular, is not worth buying hardware for as it will not scale to 4k later as nicely as 1080p does.

This is basically what DLSS does. It renders at a lower resolution and upscales it from there

You don’t want to run the actual resolution lower than native, but you can either slide the in-game render bar or use DLSS on the performance preset

Higher FPS and maintaining a steady frame rate is more noticeable than upping the resolution from 1440p to 4k IMO so based on your graphics card, it might be rough. Like, if I had an option to receive a free build that runs 120 FPS on 1440p versus 60 on 4K, I’d take the 1440p all day. After all, we’re moving around constantly, not staring at a static screen. The fluidity of movement is more noticeable and impactful to me

Ok for infos about DSR and Dlss (noted!) but anyway I dont want some too heavy as necessery tasks for my Rtx 3060 laptop. So it will be 2k and not 4k.

Absolutely.

Maybe one day I ll overkill by a 4090 but I am in a country that taxes for this is very high and totally injustified.
