Minion Testing Mega Thread

Introduction

Hello, thanks to r/MacroBioBoi and the community at large we have discovered quite a few bugs involving minions. I spent some time going through and testing interactions to try and find what was and wasn’t working and at what capacity. My testing method involved using averages, floors, and ceilings. Meaning that if a number generated had a floor of 20 and a ceiling of 40, after adding a new multiplier would make it impossible to see the old floor of 20 and I would see new ceilings above 40. The averages were to see consistency amongst the sample size. This is not the most accurate test you can do but for a quick and dirty look at so many things it was efficient.

How You Can Help!

For those who want to help, if you can log in and re-test things to confirm or deny with your testing method or even better a video, it will help us identify and report these issues to Blizzard. I want to be very clear that until these findings are verified by other individuals it should not be taken as factual! These are preliminary findings while we try to discover the root cause of the issue or receive a patch detailing that these issues are fixed.

Why Am I Doing This Before A Patch?

I am conducting these tests before Blizzard releases a patch or hotfix so that we have a baseline for what is and isn’t working as intended. That way after we get the all clear to test again we know what was fixed or missed. Minions have been a thorn “he he” in the community and Blizzard’s side since launch. I appreciate them working to improve them even with the bugs that come along with it. Please keep this in mind and show some patience with them as this issue is resolved.

Conclusion

I want to restate that these are not one hundred percent accurate tests. I need others to attempt to replicate these findings so that we can verify beyond a reasonable doubt that these issues are in fact occurring. I am not omniscient or a perfect tester. I am heavily relying on GMS, Community Figures, and the Community at large to make sure we give Blizzard a true bug report. I appreciate anyone willing to spread the word or get their hands dirty with testing. Thank you everyone who has shown passion and interest in Minions and helped bring us to a point where we can raise our army to slay demons. Happy hunting and I look forward to hearing from all of you.

First of all, I really appreciate all the work you put in to test all these interactions. I’ve been using your list to see what items I should avoid using for now. It still gets me that they managed to break the Skeletal Priests.

Did you test to see if the guaranteed CHC from Grow also worked on Fel Gluttony?

Thanks a lot for the hard work! This needs to be on the top of this forum until the promised fix arrives. A lot of people already noticed the broken Mendeln, but not a lot know even some basic minion skill and necro passives are broken for minions too like Kalan’s Edict/Titan’s Fall/Skeletal Priest. I hope the fix they are putting in can address these too.

Couple observation I have in game and from this list:

  1. Anything that buffs our character Attack Power works well on minion and Mendeln
  2. Most of the things broken are related to Minion Damage/Elite Damage

My guess is the change they made this season aimed to apply player damage more consistently to minions, this explains the 1st point. But in doing so, they broke some spaghetti code they wrote last couple rounds of “fixing/buffing” Mendeln, which ironically broke minions and Mendeln again (hence 2nd point) …

I am wondering if the druid companion build suffers the same issues. Both builds have super low damage IMO. I tried them and you feel the lack of scaling power overall.

No, I got a little worn out and didn’t test every interaction with fel and shade. I am assuming it will though from what I have been seeing.

As a “casual dad gamer” this is really really appreciated! I always make my own builds, but its such a minefield of bugged interactions… so often I will go for an entire season with a mechanic that doesn’t even work due to a bug or unintuitive interaction.

Well a big difference between minions and companions that companions are actuall skills on the skill tree. So they might be affected less or differently. Worth to put someone interested in the matter to test it out.

First of all, I want to say thank you for the work done. But I noticed that something is wrong with this data. I’ll explain: We have summons, we have Mendeln, and we have a number of aspects and glyphs that work incorrectly. It turns out that to get the maximum damage we just need to take what works. Yes, we lose a little multiplier, but we gain cosmic damage from Mendeln (in theory). That’s exactly what I did yesterday, armed with the data from this table, I rebuilt the build and went to the pit. And what do you think? The results of the passage basically did not change and perhaps even a little worse (± margin of error on the complexity of the generation). I want to note that I run pit100 a lot and can “feel” when something changes. More than 3 dozen passages and the result is like with working aspects.
For simplicity’s sake, I will assume you did not make mistakes in the tests and that leads me to the following conclusions:
Either further multiplication of damage does not work (i.e., when we start adding more and more bonuses to a working aspect)
Or non-working aspects start working at some point.

Personally, I believe it is the second option. I am guided by the fact that in those few cases when I included the pop-up damage, I saw pop-up numbers significantly exceeding the basic damage of Mendeln.

I’m one person testing dozens of things so I am certain some of this might be wrong. I did this more so to have something to keep track of what needs to be retested after 2.1.2. I also wanted to make sure the developers knew how encompassing these bugs were as I feel like a lot of this will not be addressed or simply can’t because of the volume of issues.

No, these data are fresh and correct, and I test and verify them everyday. I think I understand what’s happening to you because I did the same: adjust my build, take off what’s not working properly, replace with something else, still feels the same, not much improvement. These broken things on the list aren’t completely broken. Most of them either have their minion damage OR mendeln damage broken. When you replace them with something else, most likely you won’t be able to find a perfect substitute. For example, replace Aspect of Reanimation with Aspect of Inner Calm on a pair of gloves nets you 13% mendeln damage, but you loose 45-13=32% minion damage since the Reanimation minion damage isn’t broken. This means the marginal gain you get by replacing them isn’t as big as you think.

Here is what happened to me: I was able to do Pit 99 prior to S7, can barely do Pit 95 after S7 on eternal. I took off Aspect of Reanimation and Aspect of Great Feast which don’t work properly, replaced them with Aspect of Inner Calm and Vehement Brawler’s Aspect. Now I can barely do Pit 96. The replacement aspects are weaker than the proper ones(when they worked correctly), especially Inner Calm. Assume nothing else is broken, wouldn’t I be only 1~2 Pit level lower? So why only 96? That’s because Kalan’s Edict/Hellbent Commander/Titan’s Fall/Eliminator Glyph/Skeletal Priest are all broken too now! I am killing Elites/Bosses significantly slower than before because Titan’s Fall/Eliminator Glyph aren’t working for minions and Mendeln. And you know the implication of this, the slower they die, the more chance I’ll take damage/mess up/die.

While testing I used as blank a slate as possible along with rezoning and logging because some things were snapshotting. But if you find conflicting data, please share it as it will help me retest those specific things along with others to verify the result. There is simply so many things to test that I am relying on the community to help work through it all.

But I still insist that things are not so clear-cut. I just checked hellbent, blood moon, and their influence on Mendeln. So, I am standing fully equipped with one shield-bearing skeleton that has 100% crit and I am evaluating only the crit damage.

Mendeln’s damage is 32m-61m (61-61.8 appears often)
I take off my pants and remove 3 hellbent skills 17m-33m
I add 3 hellbent skills 17m-34m
I put on the pants and remove 3 skills 32m-62m (62 appears once, 61 does not appear)
I add 3 hellbent skills 32m-61m (61 appears often)
Each iteration was conducted for about 5 minutes

Conclusion: the pants work, hellbent is questionable(Apparently it doesn’t work).

I want to thank Bactyrael SO MUCH for all of thier hard work. Becuase of it, I only had to run five tests on the mechanics that didn’t seem to be working. You are truely a God among men! Thank you!

I tested the non-Mendeln issues that Bactyrael found (I didn’t test Mendeln interactions because the devs had said they are working on a fix for patch 2.1.2). Specifically: the interaction of Aspect of Fel Gluttony & Aspect of Reanimation, Kalan’s Edict, Titan’s Fall, damage from Skeletal Priests, and Blood Golem (option 2, damage while Healthy).

RESULTS:

  • Fel Gluttony + Reanimation: Unable to replicate Bactyrael’s results. Seems to be working.

  • Kalan’s Edict: Replicated Bactyrael’s results. DOES NOT add to minion damage.

  • Titan’s Fall: Unable to replicate Bactyrael’s results. Seems to be working.

  • Skeletal Priests: Replicated Bactyrael’s results. DOES NOT add to minion damage.

  • Blood Golem, Option 2: Replicated Bactyrael’s results. DOES NOT add to minion damage.

MEATHOD & DATA: (for the nerds and devs)

For all tests I had no Paragon Points spent, nor Witch Powers equiped.

I used the practice dummy in Kyovashad (World Tier IV), and only concerned myself with “white” damage numbers.

The minions used were: 4 Skirmishers (Option 1), 3 Shadow Mages (Option 1), and a Blood Golem (Option 1, except in test).

To establish a baseline, I let the minions hit the target for approximately 2 minutes and noted both the lowest and highest damage numbers I saw. For testing, the same general method was used.

I am not enough of a masochist to try to record all the damage numbers. But I did watch throughout to get a ‘sense’ of what the “apparent average” (most common damage number) was. In all tests the apparent average and the mathematical average ([lowest + highest] / 2) coincided nicely.

If Skill Ranks were needed, I spent only enough points in Basic and Core skills (which were never used except Decompose to spawn corpses) to unlock the Skill being tested.

I wore no gear except for what was absolutely necessary. In most cases this was simply a Magic (blue) weapon, except as noted below.

- Fel Gluttony + Reanimation:

For baseline the gear worn was an Amulet with Aspect of Fel Gluttony, and a 2-Handed Mace with a non-applicable Aspect. For testing, I put Aspect of Reanimation on the Mace. I did not have skeletons out for this test.

Baseline: Damage range 504-775 over 10 activations (703 average).

Test: Damage range 726-1347 over 10 activations (1000 average).

Note: The test range of only 10 Golem activations is small, but the difference was immediate, significant, and universal.

- Kalan’s Edict:

For baseline I used a single Blood Golem with no other minions out. For testing I summoned the rest of my skeletal minions. I only tracked the Golem’s damage.

Baseline: Damage range 23-40 (32 average).

Test: Damage range 23-40 (32 average).

- Titan’s Fall:

For baseline I just used skeletal minions (no Golem). For testing I purchased Titan’s Fall (along with Necrotic Carapace to gain Fortified via spawning corpses with Decompose). Yes, I made sure to use an Elite practice dummy.

Baseline: Damage range 6-29 (18 average).

Test: Damage range 7-34 (21 average).

- Skeletal Priests:

Used only skeletal minions (no Golem). Test vs Baseline was obviously just with or without the Skeletal Priest buff.

Baseline: Damage range 6-29 (18 average).

Test: Damage range 6-29 (18 average).

- Blood Golem, Option 2:

I only had the Golem out (no skeletons). Baseline = Option 1; Test = Option 2

Baseline: Damage range 23-40 (32 average).

Test: Damage range 23-40 (32 average).

CONCLUSION:

I was unable to replicate some of Bactyrael’s findings, but that does not mean that 1) I tested correctly, nor 2) that these bugs only show up occasionally (since I went with the bare minimum loadout, perhaps other strange interactions are occuring to cause Bactyrael’s results).

I implore further testing from others (hooray for the Armory for streamlining the process of switching to a test spec and back).

Nevertheless, it does seem that many key mechanics involving Summoning are not working as intended.

My best guess is that, with the new updates to Summoning systems, effects that specifically target minions (as opposed to the player) are “seeing” minions as the player and therefore not applying their buffs as intended.

I dearly hope this information is enough for the development team to address these issues alongside the expected fix for the Ring of Mendeln coming in patch 2.1.2.

SIDE NOTES:

Since I was testing stuff already, I also tested Black River. It still DOES NOT increase the radius of Blighted Corpse Explosion. It has not worked properly since release. At this point I would like to request the devs simply modify the Tool-tip to reflect this.

This is crazy, we are missing so many multipliers. no wonders the minions dont do much damage when reaching T4. My fully geared minion necro has barely done Pit 90 atm.

I re-tested Titan’s Fall and found some interesting results:

  1. With no gear, bare minimum skill, no paragon and just a grandfather + mendeln: without Titan’s Fall highest hit is 1400, highest mendeln is 24.5k; with Titan’s Fall, highest hit is 1480, highest mendeln is 25.6k. This is about 5~6% increase, not 18%.
  2. With full gear and everything: with and without Titan’s Fall highest hit is 4.2M, highest mendeln is 65M. Absolutely 0% increase.

The full gear test matches with Bactyrael and my previous test result. Combining your test result and my 1st test leads me to believe elite damage from Titan’s Fall works on the most basic level (actually had about 18% increase for your result), but as more scalers come in play, it somehow diminishes, to the point of actually having 0 impact in the end. I’m worried if Blizz can even clean up this spaghetti code at this point …

That is so wierd! Yeah, there must be some sort of deminishing returns as more modifiers/effects are layered on. I wonder if something similar is going on with Fel Gluttony + Reanimation at higher scalers as well.

Hello, can someone confirm that aspect of the damned finally works with shadow mages? And that apparently that the damage portion of grasping veins now also works for minions? I am trying to choose between them on shadow minion build. Tnx to any kind soul who would respond in advance.

Yes to both on the minions side but in comparison to ring of mendeln the damage of mages is rather low. You can scale them fairly well though so if that is your mission cheers and good luck.

Tyy! :* I am using mendeln but want to progress some more while I w8 for 2.1.2.

I put on the pants and remove 3 skills 32m-62m (62 appears once, 61 does not appear)

I tested this again today, and no the pants critical damage boost does not work on Mendeln. But I think I know what happened to your test, this is what happened to my test:

  1. No pants, full gear, 9 points in hellbent, skeleton Mendeln hits 24m max
  2. Put pants on, full gear, 9 points in hellbent, No Curse, skeleton Mendeln hits 24m max
  3. Put pants on, full gear, 9 points in hellbent, Curse proced, skeleton Mendeln hits 46m max

That’s it, it’s the curse and your damage bonus with curse kicked it. Skeleton attacks very fast and procs the curse very often with full gear especially when you have the minion attack speed aspect. Unlike Decrepify, Iron Maiden does not even have a visual effect on the target, so you can easily miss it. These tests should really be done in a controlled setting, minimal gear/skills/passives, ideally no paragon unless you are specifically testing that paragon. The equivalent test with your test setting would be to add one more step: curse the target manually and constantly, with and without pants.

Conclusion: Blood Moon Breeches pants critical damage boost broken for Mendeln.
