Is there no way to transmute or convert to iron chunks? Any target farming i can do?

Salvage equipment and collect from ore out in the world.
Iron chunks are from salvaging weapons.
Ever post i see of people out of materials. Either had the best luck in the world on items. Or bought them.
Because i have 3 characters at 100 and can tell you materials have NEVER been an issue gold and getting upgrades has. I have not salvaged an item other than for aspects since my first character was like 80 either.
