Marvel Heroes (Omega) - Doing an MMO/ARPG the right way

I put some man hours into MH but it had major flaws. If I could ask them to release the game today and they would I wouldn’t ask. I would want them to go back before year 2 landed and they started doing signature updates and reworking all classes. Needed many other things. I do miss having a marvel game especially on PC. All they have is mobile garbage. Heck I think Marvel Avengers gets shutdown sometime soon. D4 will run with a skeleton crew and low average base in the future for years just like D3. Marvel just gets the axe

I couldn’t stand that one, it lasted a little longer than PoE, I went twice as far. Which means I did 2 mission things, instead of 1, before uninstalling it.

The MMO aspect really turned me off. Too many people blasting off constantly made the game feel like visual vomit against my will.

I played a little bit of MH as well. Think i played Wolverine, Spiderman and Ironman the most.

I do remember that the classes (heroes) was very homogenized. They all had similar skillset which was for the same purpose. Like an 8 sec cd smash etc

Man I loved that game :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
Still sad its gone :sob:

I loved MH, and even returned for the MH Omega launch. I probably spent $200-300 bucks on the game over the course of a couple years.

TBH tho people saying it was F2P friendly. I recall them releasing new characters monthly at 10 bucks a pop, and costumes for another 10 bucks or maybe 15?

So if you wanted to play new characters with a cool costume, minimum 20 bucks a month. Sure you could earn characters by playing, but if i recall it would take 3+ months to earn a character for free.

Took a while to earn the necessary shards to unlock a character, true. But it was either saving up or buying it. If you really did want a hero and didn’t want to spend hero, you’d just buy the pack with a stash space, some buffs and a skin or 2 which was around 20$ iirc.

Spent quite a bit on the game because I really got invested it. Again, I never noticed all the banning or shadowbanning because I was probably whitelisted

In any case, I did end up getting some real input in the game. After months of whining I managed get the designer to redo the Gambit 90’s classic costume  (was so worth it)

It’s why I love the model for Mass Effect 3 MP. You could earn all of the characters as well the the common, uncommon, and rare loot, with only the legendary ultra rare loot being out of reach. For a long time rare and ultra rare gear were on equal footing with the trend only breaking when they added the Harrier, but even then the existence of the Harrier added a long-term loot chase, something I think is sorely missing from D4. I was happy to play hundreds of hours of ME3MP whereas D4s grind ends when you hit 100 and there’s no loot chase.

Granted ME3MP was p2w because you could literally buy power but a level 1 harrier was still good, you didn’t need a level 10 harrier, and it was a PvE game so meh.

I remember farming splinters so I could unlock another hero for free, and taking costumes from all the free-to-play heroes and putting them in the blender to get a random transmog. Good times.

The devs and mods created a pretty clever system that allowed users to downvote each other’s posts. This would eventually lead to shadowbanning. You could post, but no one would see it. You’d never be warned or told. This allowed the devs to simply sit back and let the fanboys who attacked anyone who criticized the game (especially the monetization), to downvote these posts till the person was hidden. The devs were free from blame, and the mods didn’t have to do their jobs.

The forum rules were: Never defend a person being picked on by the fanboys (white listers). The mods will single you out and punish you. This happened to me. One of the first GM’s, a British dude, that eventually quit and went to Bioware. Singled me out. I confronted him, and he admitted yeah he did, and he’d “do it again”. Banned me from both game and forum.

Ryolnir, Doomsaw, both were unprofessional, and spiteful. Both hid CEO Dave Dohrmann’s predatory behavior to protect their friends and license. Both banned over anything they disagreed with. Appeals were ignored. They used a side email for appeals that led to nothing. They made CS refuse to address bans. Ensuring all appeals went to an email to either be ignored or laughed at.

Sad thing is, eventually this attitude killed their game. News got out, and evidence was overwhelming. Combined with the uninspired game design, the lack of new content, and focus on monetization. They simply whittled their player base down to the devout, and that wasn’t enough to keep the game going.

I miss Marvel Heroes a bit too. Because it was the best option, I had to play as my favorite Marvel characters, outside of a crappy mobile Gacha. It’s such a shame the devs and mods were so awful.

Hey, look kids, America only defends people because Captain America only fights with a shield

Mods could shadowban too. I know Ryolnir shadowbanned people himself

Same. I had mine on cosmic. I played that game from beta till Disney yanked the license.

They did shut it down. They didn’t renew the license, but I don’t think it had to do with getting all of their movie rights (or most) back.

They didn’t have all the rights to the movie characters. Still don’t, in the case of Spiderman. They can’t recast the X-men for a few years, which is why they haven’t shown up in the movies yet except for Professor X.

That said, I don’t think getting the movie rights was why they yanked the license. They wanted more control of their characters in games, like Ultimate Alliance 3, Avengers, etc.

Also miss it, I didn’t play it for long stretches, but it kept me coming back for new classes to try. They really made a lot, and they were all fairly unique in how they played. Very impressive.

What? 10+ years old, still has a player base, even more during a new season, obviously is still good to some. You’re delusional to think your opinion is shared by every gamer. Just because YOU don’t like it, doesn’t mean EVERYONE doesn’t.

i loved that game. spent a ton on it too. Guess in the long run it dying saved me money - kinda like someother game.

The game was done poorly. Had tons of bugs. Balance was a major issue. Some character playstyle didn’t make sense at all. Inventory was a pain the as$ for free to play players. I sink 2000 hours into that game. I would gladly spend another 2000 hours into it again if it ever comes back from the dead. No matter how bad the development was, it was still fun to play. I have never seen another playstyle like Juggarnant ever again. A true “hit and run” style brawler.

You’re obviously a rock mover. Go back to reddit. End of discussion.

i loved that game, but it had it’s issues. specifically, itemization was all over the place.

Ah that MMO disguised as an ARPG which got shut down for good for good reasons. Ahaaa
