I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this one, but maybe there is a secret option I haven’t found.
Is there a way to make item compare be turned on by default?
I have no idea why I have to toggle it (press Shift key when hovering over an item) every time I launch the game.
Not sure why the default is for it to be off, when 90% of the game is comparing items either.
Hoping there is toggle somewhere. Has anyone figured out something?

Sorry at work so can’t provide exact instructions but yes, it’s in settings. There is an option to have it always on.
EDIT: Thanks google!
First off, open your Diablo 4 settings. From there, go to the “Gameplay” tab. In that tab, you should see an option for Advanced Tooltip Compare.

Just went through all options again and couldn’t find it.
You don’t mean the “Item Label Display” right? That one is for showing item names on drops.
Just to make it clear I’m talking about the pop-up window that show’s the currently equipped item when you hover some gear in your inventory. It’s always off for me, and pressing Shift makes it toggle on for as long as the game is running.
Edit: saw your update.
That option does something different - it makes it so you see a lot of detail when looking at the comparison pop-up, but does not make the comparison pop-up itself be ON.
Just tested it for the heck of it too:
- Start the game
- Open inventory
- Hover over an item
- No pop-up to show the currently equipped item next to the new one.
- Press Shift key, and the equipped pop-up shows up.
- With the option you mentioned there is extra comparison info in the pop-up
Sorry, I smell what you’re stepping in a lil better now.
-I have to hit shift a lot of times as well to get the equipped item info to also pop up. I guess I am so used to it that I don’t even notice it anymore.
I have failed thee, I don’t know the answer to your actual question.
