[Main Thread] Charter/Spectrum ISP Latency Spikes since 1.0.3

I’m outside of Dallas and ever since the time coinciding with patch 1.0.3, I have been getting huge lag spikes as reported in game by pressing ctrl-r twice. These spikes go up to 1,100 - 2000ms rendering the game unplayable. All through the betas and up to 1.0.3, everything was normal with no lag spikes and latency between 50-70ms.

WinMTR seems to show a problem with: lag-63.irnhtxqb01h.netops.charter.cxx

Can Blizzard do anything to assist getting this issue resolved? There’s no way Charter Spectrum is going to listen to one user. It took 2 months of repeated calls and tech support visits to get an issue resolved on my line a couple years ago. There is no way I’m going through that again.

This looks consistent with some other people I have seen that have charter.

And looking at this, it looks like you aren’t getting any real loss, as all the packets are showing up at the end on the other side of Charter. (569) But it does look to be causing some latency for sure.

So.

My (theory) thinking here is that some ISPs (and even some modems/routers) are actually having issues with D4 traffic.

But try this:

Set Bnet to exit completely at game launch and let me know if that fixes anything. Also make sure to exit any web browsers.

I am in the same position. Spectrum in midwest, unplayable during prime hours. Experiencing up to 5 second warps.

I do not have problems with hosting/joining p2p. A brief 10m test of PoE during tonight’s D4 lagfest showed a clean 35ish ping to the Texas server with no problems.

Like Gandreg, my MTR did not show significant packet loss, nor did it reflect my ingame latency spikes.

Closing battle net on launch through the settings did not help.

Thank you for that info update. Just wanted to see if it was something that might help. I did update my connection mega thread with exact steps if needed.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve already been through your thread and have tried several of the solutions including closing battle.net on game launch and disabling msedge from loading on startup etc. Unfortunately, nothing has worked to stop the lag spikes.

Gandreg
are you running either one of these 2 modems from Spectrum:
EN2251
E31N2V1

if you are … please google search random disconnects and odd issues. these are the worst models they offer and are notorious for problems. any other brand is much better.

Yeah, next thing I am going to do is test a different online game to see if it’s an ISP issue or Diablo 4 issue. I kind of hope it’s a Diablo 4 issues as that can probably be addressed sooner.

No, I have an Arris model. That also wouldn’t account for everything working fine all through the betas up to 1.0.3. Thanks for your reply though.

Understood. Well that’s unfortunate.

I have a pretty strong feeling this is a D4 issue on some level, since it seems to relate to its traffic.

Spectrum as well with ps5, it is unplayable the last 3-4 days. Everything else works fine, only d4 shows these symptoms. At this point, I seriously doubt it’s on our end. Reddit is also full with similar posts.
Blizz time to acknowledge and address the issue maybe?

Yep, Spectrum here as well and having pretty big rubberbanding problems and disconnects. I just changed out all the hardware and had a tech visit my house and nothing has changed.

Same here. Been trouble shooting here and no solutions. Spectrum. Southwest here.

actually the Hitron modems are very inconsistent and can go hours, days, months, or years with no issues. it’s well documented internally with spectrum engineering team and on a multitude of private and public forums.

i was just throwing that out there because those 2 models are very bad and was going to give u a heads up.

your arris modem is likely using a puma 6 chipset (TM1602, 1670, 1672) or another model like that. they have ping instability due to the puma 6 chipset that prioritized bandwidth over latency. if / when you ever get another modem upgrade ensure it’s a broadcom chipset.

and yeah, with the modem you have it’s likely not on your end. hopefully they address this issue 7/6 live maintenance

and for the record…

I’m also on Spectrum and do not have ping spikes… just the usual east coast 90ms ping.

Thanks for the informative post. The model is a TM1602AP2. It was provided by Spectrum and I wasn’t given any choice in the matter. I have owned my own modem in the past but that was a long time ago. I’ll keep what you said about the broadcom chipset in mind if the current modem ever needs replacing.

yes, np.
btw, the TM1602 is a solid modem but it is docsis 3.0. where i am the techs love it for stability. It’s just one of those modems that keeps on working. Unfortunately because it’s docsis 3.0 they’re being phased out in my region for docsis 3.1.

gl my dude

Did you remove any lines before this? If not, the average ping to your home equipment seems high. It really should be best of 0 and average of <5ms.

How can I perform this and share my results? I am on a different country but I am getting severe lag spikes since the second week of release and its getting worse each week. None of my other games have the slightest bit of lag.

This thread is about Charter Spectrum specifically, so you’ll want to make a new thread, please.

I remember living in Minnesota, and they had this issue with D3; it ended up being a peering agreement outside of Blizzard and ISP control (was somewhere in the middle)
They ended up rerouting traffic away from that node, fixed the issue.

I have charter spectrum as well and upgraded to fiber. I have a new Netgear cm1200 modem arriving tomorrow and will have it installed and recheck to see what is up. I have upgraded to fiber and new Cat8 cabling. I have terrible latency and confirmed with a friend who lives across town he has the same terrible latency. WoW servers west coast I averaged 74ms (in hawaii) 74 is amazing for me. Now I average 145ms to 1000ms and rubber band all over the place since last patch/DOS attack.
