Magic & Rare Items - Ancestral versions in Penitent

Currently, you can only find Ancestral items starting in Torment I difficulty, so players won’t begin finding items with Greater Affixes (GA) until they reach that difficulty (only drops on Legendaries, Uniques and Mythic Uniques). To make Magic and Rare items more fun while improving their extremely limited lifespan, I’m proposing blues and yellows can now roll Ancestral during Penitent difficulty as follows:

  • Magic and Rare Items
    • Can now drop as Ancestral items in Penitent difficulty
    • Magic Items can drop with only (1) GA
    • Rare Items can drop with (1 or 2) GA

This change will have zero impact on Torment difficulties as Magic and Rare items are automatically salvaged, but having Ancestral versions of Magic and Rare items during Penitent difficulty makes them more competitive during this brief window of time before vanishing altogether when reaching Torment. Lastly, Legendaries, Uniques and Mythic Uniques will still reign supreme as they can potentially drop with up to (4) GA. As Penitent is freely accessible to everyone at level 1 who completed campaign, having Ancestral versions of Magic and Rare items during leveling would make itemization much more interesting.

Not at the current speed of leveling. It’s too fast, even if you stay on normal and don’t use any xp boosts. The gear churn while leveling makes all gear irrelevant as soon as you reach the next tier of ilvl… which happens too fast.

If they won’t slow down leveling enough to make gear worth thinking about, then maybe they should open up the affix cap so it’s possible to find max range affixes and just use ilvl to bring up the minimum as you level up… then there would be a chance to find something worth keeping longer during the leveling journey.

True, I think they should make it take at least 36-48 hrs to reach max level of 60, as opposed to only a few hours. They trivialize their own game.

Common and blues should not exist. Just make a rare drop instead.

Just make them better, don’t just remove them. They have been in every Diablo game and should remain. With that logic, remove rares as well. That’s not the answer, D4 should have rich and diverse itemization, just like in D2.

D2 is the GOAT and should be the gold standard for D4.

Nobody cares about whites or blues. They serve no purpose. Removal is answer. I do think we need 1 more tier of item. I made this in a post back in the day. I called them epic items. They would have red beam. Epic items are in between legendary and mythic. Epic items have an additional inherent affix. Most of these are economy related like extra gold, gems, gob find, ec t.

Why add more useless crap to the game when they can fix existing useless crap? It’s like going to the hardware store and picking up a new box of nails to fix something, when they can use the old box of nails in the garage. The old box of nails might have a worn and torn box, but the nails are still functional. Magic and rare items can serve a purpose in the game, just have to make a few tweaks. Agree on whites, they are useless… but I’m not talking about whites.

It was an idea. Ill go ahead and check out of your thread now.

No thanks. Not for me. Leveling is not a fun experience for many players. Just let me get to “endgame” asap. I’ve leveled dozens of times, that’s enough for me.

Post 60 is more important for me. Could add a little of the old spice back to pre 60 loot ,couldn’t hurt.

Because i am opening gift of trees and getting blues and rares, there are blues and rares in the vendor, these could be so much better if we had ancestral versions.

750s version blue/rare sacreds

800 blue/rare ancestral and this fixes the game to the better version of launch. Basically having to no only look at orange in endgame, since we may find a ga rare, we can print aspects onto.

Basically you could spread the 1 ga even 2 ga loot journey, and make it more colorful.

This also means we can have what we had at launch and that is a useful rare drop. This also improves endgame rewards instead of the trash blues and rare i get in the gift of tree caches, improves vendors, gives a reason to even look. and other quest rewards that drop rare’s.

This was the better side of loot 1.0.

Even if the usefulness trial off as i go deeper into t3 and trying to conquer it and perhaps T4.

Even if all they basically do is make ga 1/2 rare’s so change the colour, that alone would be more interesting and fixes quickly rare rewards. 2 birds one stone.

Deeper work could then be done later perhaps, but look , rocking the boat right now is probably not needed right now, so as much as i would enjoy it, if it could go wrong and rock the ship too much, not worth it, loot is otherwise in a good place imo.

Loot changes pre-60 seem pointless. I’d like non-GA ancestrals starting at T1 though. Having ilvl 800s without a GA would fill a gap. I use them quite often, enchanting the useless GA off an ancestral, especially weapons. Might as well just drop them and make them a bit common, so gearing as a young 60 doesn’t amount to just looking for stars.

I’m dissappointed everyone talks about the endgame, but completely disregards journey when playing the early game. That’s a core problem with D4 is it trivilizes that experience, unlike in D2. For D4 to age well, it needs more D2 essence in its bones.

it would be nice if we could “level up” our blues/yellows by killing things and have those none legendary items randomly transform into something new. I play on a modded everquest server (the hero’s journey) and you can take any piece of gear and slap it on your toon’s upgrade slot and as you kill stuff the item in your upgrade slot transforms from “white/normal” to “magic/blue” to “rare/yellow” to legenary “orange”… its pretty wicked, very fun leveling up gears that way.

After level 15 or so no one looks at a blue except to either sell it or crush it at the blacksmith. Get rid of them after level 15.
