Back in 2021, there was a pretty fun game that released called Magic: Legends. It was a Magic The Gathering ARPG that had a lot of promise. Lots of loot boxes and whatnot but was a fun game none the less. I played the BETA for well over 100 hours but before the BETA even ended, they refunded everyone’s money without a word to why and they shut down the whole project. 2 years later, diablo 4 drops and I thoroughly enjoy the game, playing for well over 400 nows. I noticed from the BETA that something felt very familiar about the game and couldn’t put my finger on it. Then it hit me. Pretty much every event in D4 is the exact replica of Magic: Legends events they had. If you go to youtube, you can find game play and decide for yourself but its a cut and paste copy.
I had never heard of a gaming company refunding EVERY purchase that was made during a BETA. It felt very weird to me. But if my theory is true, Microtransactivision/Blizzard, probably dropped them a huge buyout check, allowing them to refund and make fat bonuses while the devs just cut and copied Magic’s open world activities right into D4. I still love the game and wouldn’t be at all surprised if they did this but it makes me sad at the laziness the team has shown in trying to bring back the Diablo franchise. This game has/had so much potential and instead of coming up with new and invigorating ideas, it seems they just bought out ideas as pasted them in. Let me know if you see the similarities.
