When you se4ll gear, you should either get your gems or get the value back. Gems are crazy expensive, when you consider you never had to craft them, ever, until now, and they no longer drop as gems. Best of the worst cases, gear with gems that are sold, at least, always stay in the buyback list.
or you could pay attention for a millisecond and unsocket them before if you are low on gems?
i mean really, is there a security net needed for every single part of the game?

When you trash them at the blacksmith, you don’t lose them. It’s not really a safety net. And why should you have to take time to go to another vendor to have them removed. There is already enough painfully slow stuff in the game that just wastes time. Not everyone has 12 hours a day to do stupid stuff in the game. They always keep talking about making the game so that you don’t waste time or slow down your progression. Having to hunt down all the vendors for basic stuff is the worst.
I don’t even pay to unsocket them. I usually just salvage the item and it gives me back my gems free of charge lol.

well the blacksmith salvages the item and as hes not the jeweler he doesnt have use for the gem.
the vendor buys the whole item, with everything in it.
has nothing to do with playing 12 hours a day.
