Heya all,
I’m enjoying the new D4 Book of Lorath lore-serie on Youtube. In episode 2, Nephalem are mentioned as part Angel and part Demon. In Diablo 3, we specifically are told ‘we’ as heroes are Nephalem. This explains our powers.
So that makes me wonder. What happened to the Nephalem that roamed Sanctuary 50 years ago (in D3)? And also… are our new characters in D4 also Nephalem, or does our power come from somewhere else.

Yes we are indeed Nephalem. Our powers however have been greatly diminished by Inarius since the time of D3 fifty years ago.

I have thought about it and since Inarius used the World Stone to weaken the Nelphalim we may be regaining our power since it was shattered.
Diablo V: Rise of the Nelphalim.

The nephalem have been rising again since Tyrael shattered the worldstone in D2, which was supressing the powers of the nephalem.

A vast majority of the population of Sanctuary, 90% or so, was removed by Malthael’s actions at the end of Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls.
There still exists Nephalem on Sanctuary but to what number we aren’t aware, however as it goes, the heroes across all of the games are Nephalem. The rest of humanity are regular humans. Keep in kind though that all of human kind were once Nephalem, but due to Inarius’ actions prior to banishing Lilith, that being attuning the worldstone to weaken the Nephalem over time, the Nephalem’s powers and immortality slowly weakened until they were mortal.

My theory is that the D3 PC is going to be corrupted by Diablo (and be the final boss you supposedly have to have everything perfect to beat). The wings you get for completing the altar in the current season are titled “Wings of Terror” and their flavor text is “You feel an evil entity slowly taking over your soul.”
That’d explain both how Diablo comes back (he has to at some point, right?) and why the Nephalem isn’t running around curb-stomping evil anymore.
My guess on why we’re extra-special is going to be because we’re “blessed” by both Lilith (through the blood petals) and Inarius (during Chapter 1).

“There have been no Nephalem for a thousand years!”
The Nephalem can die out, and then there are occasional throwbacks. The hero in D3 doesn’t know he’s a Nephalem and has to be convinced.
