We - the player - are Diablo. Everything we have been doing, the havoc we have been wrecking, it’s all a plot from Belial to curry favour amongst his older brothers, in particular the Lord of Terror.
This also explains why we haven’t actually fought Mephisto yet. He doesn’t want to fight his brother.
Big D is inside us. We just don’t know it yet.

Well just like mephisto was, the brothers will reforming in hell atm.
My guess is the next expansion will be him summoning his brother or brothers back seeing as his new vessel is so powerful.
Or he’s going to try and take over sanctuary himself and we summon the brothers to stop him.
Honestly there is a million different ways they could take this story fingers crossed it’s not a lame way they do it

except Diablo only worked with Meph & Baal.
He and his brothers were disliked by the rest of the lords of hell & is why they were “banished” by them (even if it was planned by the big 3).
