I beg the forums here to light this post up like crazy if you agree.
We were told the game wouldn’t be a massive loot piñata with legendary items falling from the sky and many of us were very happy to hear that as it cheapens the experience for arpg players when there is no such thing as “rare loot”. Now after our experience in playing the beta I saw a ridiculous amount of legendary items drop for myself and others. This isn’t what we were told and isn’t what we want. Please.
On the other hand please reply if you like loot the way it is. I wanna see a show of hands. Does anyone really prefer having all leggos at lvl 25?
Give us a magic find stat. It’ll create more interesting loot choices giving us more to work with in general with the bland itemization that currently exists.

I don’t like it. I think the drop rate should be about 1/4 of what it is now. You get way too many from the gambling npc too

I agree, Tysm for replying man. I really want people to run this up and hope they see. We don’t want a loot piñata
There’s literally 100+ legendary affixes, some are only from drops. They can drop with different stat amounts, and different item levels.
When you hit level 40 or 50 all these legendaries will become trash. Then when you hit 70 those new ones will become trash.
They’re just “bonuses” to your gear and they drop like candy because otherwise you’d be running around in level 10 gear and unable to kill anything because you can find the affix you need.
Most of my legendaries over the weekend were trash. I didn’t get a single one on any character that was useful in a build. It was all basic stuff like barrier, movement speed, flat damage etc…
No synergy stuff at all.
Then there’s uniques which aren’t available in tier 1 or 2.
They are massively powerful build defining drops that are rare af.
You might find 5 by the time you’re 100 and none of them might be for your class.
The drop rate is fine, because legendaries aren’t the powerhouse you think they are.

That’s a problem too though, they aren’t great but are named “legendary” with special affix’s akin to them being legendary right? Why not just give us more interesting layers to the core of itemization/affix’s and statting and building our chars. So we can use good rolls from loot to make something happen build wise. You’re right though the problem fundamentally isn’t the loot piñata leggos it’s the shallow stats and core of player power excluding the leggo piñata.
D3 legendary does not equal D4 legendary.
D4 legendary is something between D3 rare and D3 legendary. D3 equivalent item in D4 is Unique, and will be much more rare and not findable until level 50.
So no, not loot piñata.
People are just staring themselves blind on the legendary tag as if it were something not meant for common folk.
Maybe Blizzard should consider renaming “Legendary” to “Epic” if the open beta drop rate is indicative of how it’s going to be in the actual live game. This might help partially solve the confusion/distaste.
They’re technically aspects. But aspect affix doesn’t really feel right.
Some of them are powerful, some not so much, some are surprisingly powerful in combination with others but otherwise seem lack luster.
They’re all legendary in their own way, just not in the same way as we’re used to.
I do agree with what you’re saying. There needs to be a bit of rework for certain aspects. But regardless of what they do, there will always be the more “optimal” choice.
But yeah. It’s the preconceived notion of what a legendary item is supposed to be in an mmo/arpg game that is causing a lot of confusion.
I kinda feel the aspect legendaries should have been a separate tier of items like epic or something. Not quite legendary but better than rares. Also gives a way to make them visually distinct.

You are presuming “legendary” has some specific, agreed up, objective meaning. It does not. It is merely a rank in a system which continues a number of steps upward.
Legendary drop rate seemed fine to me. I got more legendaries from gambling then I did from enemy drops. The codex makes every item legendary anyways so the drop rate is just helping you find legendries that don’t exist in the codex.
At first I was worried but then you’ve got to remember that uniques exist and the game even tells you that uniques are what make or break your build.
I saw the butcher unique and I am on the same train of thought. Uniques’ color palatte should be different. I shouldn’t go “oh is that not a legendary?” when I see the color.
If aspected legendary items had a different color as well I wouldn’t complain.
I think the drop rate was fine but for some people I played with, it did seem to just rain legendaries.
Regardless, that it’s a legendary doesn’t mean it’ll be useful. Most of the early ones I had weren’t good for my character so I didn’t use them. Given this reality, I don’t think they should lower the drop rates. That seems intentional because of the great variety of affixes and aspects available.
If they do lower the drop rate, I’d want the affixes to be more relevant to my character’s needs, but that’s a very hard thing to deduce by an engine. As such, I think it’s OK as is.
In the end we will see a shallow loot system in the game base off what we’re seeing here

There should be a lot less loot in general. The few pieces that drop here and there should feel meaningful. I want to feel excited about a yellow, or even a blue, that just dropped to the point where I’d want to stop what I’m doing and check if it’s an upgrade for me. I want to feel excited about looking over that one piece of gear that finally dropped (its graphic and stats) AND is a good upgrade. Instead, I collect 30 items in a span of 10 minutes, then quickly mouse over each to find the one with the highest green number, right-click that one and get rid of the rest. I am playing a calculator game instead of appreciating the item I’ve just equipped.
Here’s a good test if loot is meaningful: With your eyes closed, can you name each of your loot pieces and roughly what they do? I know I can’t in D4 beta. All I can say is “I have 10 items equipped and they make me stronger somehow”. I feel like in D1 and D2 the loot upgrade is slower (although still a lot of useless loot drops), and every upgrade you equip feels more meaningful and lasts longer. For example, boots that only add significantly noticeable run speed and one elemental resistance. Maybe gloves that add a significant amount of attack speed and some other bonus. c
