Looming Plot Hole

Lorath knows that Akarat is Mephisto, he knows Mephisto’s tricks, and slashing the throat of Akarat wouldn’t kill Mephisto, but would probably martyr Akarat instead. There is no logical reason for Lorath to have reacted in the way he did when he accidently slashed the throat of the Adreona…

Really disappointing to see such an irrational portrayal when there are so many other ways that scene could have been handled. Then to have so much more lore based off this illogical scene makes me want to skip the entire storyline… Which is really annoying because I love a good story.

Is there something I’m missing that would make Lorath slashing Adreona’s throat make any sense? Being in a hallucination despite knowing Mephisto’s tricks simply doesn’t do it.

Mephisto is in a mortal body.

There’s no reason to not believe that by killing the body, Mephisto would have to find another host.

And if Lorath was close to Adreona, he could absolutely just mindlessly lash out. People get the dumbs where extreme emotion is concerned.

That’s the point. He would just find another host, he wouldn’t die. Regardless of that Lorath is supposed to be very knowledgeable about this man and shouldn’t just fall for his tricks so easily.

I guess we could go with the “He was in a frantic state” but then couldn’t Mephisto just do that to everyone who gets in his way?

Maybe, but then the host wouldn’t be standing right next to Adreona.

THis is about him keeping her safe and protected from Mephisto.

Sure, M hopping a new body isn’t a permanent solution, but it’s better than having him in arm’s reach of an old flame.. er.. “good friend”.

M jumps another body and runs, Lorath can chase that later.

Getting him away from Adreona matters most in the moment. Remember, he just lost Neyrelle. Something like days ago.

Another person he cares about being in danger from Mephisto?

Yeah, not being on his best brain cells is understandable. (and we can assume that the medium the story if being told in truncates some of the actual thoughts and details - video game cinematics are briefer than books)

but by proving that he isnt akarat, access to the pools of creation would have proven far more difficult. He needed people to willingly follow and sacrifice themselves for his cause.

I guess those things do make it make more sense, but I it would still be more believable if he had slashed the throat of anything other than Akarat inside what is portrayed as an obvious hallucination. Like a summoned minion or literally anything else.

One of the things that really bothers me is how Lorath still has the gul later on to claim “I know Mephisto’s tricks”… Clearly not…
If that was supposed to be a character trait, I can’t help but see a plot hole here.

There is no reason to assume Lorath would know he was being tricked in the moment. Mephisto would be a pretty poor enemy if his tricks no longer worked on people who are aware of him.

Hmm, I disagree. He regrets his attitude several times, he knows he lacked wisdom. Mephisto is the master of hatred, he manages to manipulate him exactly as he wanted. And in the end, he achieved this small victory.

That’s specifically supposed to be one of Lorath’s character traits is knowing Mephistos tricks

Sure, in general, but not necessarily while he’s under his influence. Mephisto is powerful enough to influence people that know who he is. Otherwise, he’d be a pretty powerless villain. Lorath can try to prevent himself from becoming ensnared, but it doesn’t mean he is immune.

Yeah idk, I guess you’re right, but it still just doesn’t sit right with me.

That’s fair. We all have our own opinions on the story.

Yes. Another host that isn’t Akarat. He would have to be the body of some nobody which would set his plans back considerably.

Also, this isn’t a plot hole. It’s a contrivance.

He was being dragged into a giant Mephisto head mouth. And/or towards Mephisto. He panicked and thought he could kill him. What else was he supposed to do? let Mephisto drag him in for a kiss? He was getting dragged by tentacles right into his personal space.

The entire point of that encounter was that it wasn’t a rational act. Mephisto had played a part in taking everything from Lorath. He was angry, he was upset, and he acted out. He knows he shouldn’t have, but that’s part of being human.

Don’t think too much and you’ll enjoy the story, there’s so many parts that don’t make sense.

My problem was more that this was an on-brand Belial *deception* tech. Tbh I think they struggled embodying “hatred“ outside of the queen character.

Personally i’ve never seen characters making poor decisions, or acting rashly in the moment, as a plot hole. It might be poor story telling though
