So like do we have to unlock them every season, from the preseason through seasons 1,2, etc?
Or are they permanent once you unlocked it? Confused on this so far…
The stat bonus is permanent for the game mode you play, the renown/xp you still get every season. So no real reason to farm them over and over each season, just click on the ones you find for some extra renown/xp.

the boost to stats is permanent, so you don’t have to unlock those even in season to get the benefits for any new character (even a seasonal one): but you have to reclick on those to get renown with any new character.

cool, thanks guys for clarifying this for me.
They specifically said they are tied to the realm the character is on. So you will have to find them on the seasonal realm once, but only once for the stat boosts.

I love this change and the fact blizz listened.
Cant imagine farming them over and over each season.
That would force me (and probably not only me) not to play seasons at all, meaning no battle pass, thus no income. 
whos to say a task to complete the season journey isnt finding all the altars of lilith? heh
May be (I really hope not…), but even if they put it there as a task, hopefully not every season.
You misinterpreted what they said.
They did not say that you only need to do it on 1 season.
They said each realm is different. The same is true for d3.
A new season is a fresh start, a new realm.
They weren’t saying yes or no specifically because they wanted to be vague knowing that if they said “yes, you need to do it every season” there would be tons of hate posts.
It is NOT expected that seasons use the same realm.
You will need to do altars only for the experience and stat boost. This will apply mostly to people minmaxing at endgame.
I went back and looked and it’s actually better than what I said. Once you unlock it on non-seasonal it will unlock it for seasonal.

this link starts at the part where they talk about the feature, but I quote
Once you’ve collected that stat boost within a specific altar of lilith, that stat effect is going to propagate out to other characters of that game type. so basically, hardcore is going to have it’s own progression for this, like if you were playing a hardcore character on launch and you go and do all these things those stat boosts you collect will propagate to your hardcore characters you would make in the seasonal realm. And the same is true for players playing in the normal realm and the normal game mode. The stat boosts they’re unlocking via the altars of lilith will also unlock for their seasonal characters in future such that players don’t need to go and collect every altar that will light up with every new season but you do want to get some of them. They still do grant experience and they give you some bonus, some progress, to your renown. But theres not the sense to need and go and do every single one of them ,every single time. We want that to be a really fun experience for players to engage with particularly while they’re exploring Sanctuary for their first couple times at most you know, and have that bit of fun. Otherwise players can choose to engage with it or ignore them as they go into their seasonal playthroughs.

I was confused about this at first but it seems like there are just two different realms they are talking about. Normal mode or hard core. Once you unlock the stat boost in your preferred realm you won’t have to again in seasons. All your future characters will have that stat boost.
Your new characters can however go around and unlock them for the experience and renown but you won’t be forced to. There are other ways to gain renown that do not include the altars.
That’s not what I remember them saying, I assume that the wording is 100% correct, however the way that’s written is not how it came across when they said it, perhaps I didn’t hear all the words maybe?
But if this is accurate, that’s nice. I’m still skeptical though.
Yeah thats exactly why I went back and put on the closed captions when I watched it again. I was super skeptical about what I was even thinking before haha. Hopefully its on point because that would be so ideal.
