Leveling feels pointless

This is my first diablo but i’m a big long time fan of rpgs. i like the feeling progression and getting stronger over time but i don’t get this feeling in diablo 4. Since everything levels with me, i’m not acutally getting stronger. lets say i do 10% of an enemy’s hp per attack and then i level up and point an extra skill point in, i sitll do 10% of the enemy’s or even less because the enemy sometimes scales harder than i do. It makes me wonder why there’s even leveling in this game at all, i was having fun at first but after like 10 hours i’m starting to feel it’s all pointless. When i first started i thought the exp bonus for playing in a group was a positive but now i know it’s a negative designed to make the enemies stronger faster.

Because they didn’t smooth out the level scaling, there is a disconnect between power progression and level scaling.
So you really have to ask yourself if the devs played their own game… if yes they should’ve and would’ve seen the issues.

People complain way too much about level scaling.

If you don’t feel like you’re getting more powerful, the problem is with your build or equipment.

That’s part of the problem tho, game should be fun from level 1, for all classes.

Not “You are a slog to play until 45-55 with proper gear/build” for some classes like barb or druid

I decided to test this last night and had more fun levelling a fresh character to 20 than my main from 50-53 lol, I think I just love to “ding” - it was also cool to level without campaign and I think I’ll play my alt this weekend

What do you “do” without the campaign tho?

Just random dungeons?

It was a bit of a learning curve for me when I started, but that’s just because I’ve been playing Diablo games since I was 9. You are getting stronger, and the enemies sometimes will out scale you (mostly because you haven’t found a weapon upgrade in like 5 levels). However, I have found positives to it. You can do the entire campaign and not worry about going back to grind levels.

In previous Diablo games, you had to re-kill areas if you weren’t up to snuff, a lot of them multiple times. All in order to progress in the main campaign. I’m sure people complained about that too. “WOW, SOME DEV TEAM, DOESN’T EVEN PLAY THEIR OWN GAME, CAN’T PROGRESS IN THE STORY WITHOUT GRINDING/RESTARTING A PREVIOUS AREA 4000 TIMES!” And of course you’ll have the, “Well, that’s an issue with your build, you need to roll zealadin and get a 45 res shield, git gud.”

That’s a different issue though.

I’m playing Barbarian, and while the killing can sometimes be slow, I can definitely feel like I’m getting more powerful with levels. Hell, upgrading my equipment at the smith/jeweler can make a big difference.

That’s because if you don’t get the rares/legendaries you want during that specific level then you’ll get slightly weaker on the next level.

Feels like I’m always “playing catchup”. Never getting a rest. I’d say allow players to freeze experience so they can focus on the gearing aspect. But it’s so slow leveling up after 50 (maybe 40)… it would make you not want to use that feature.

IDK :man_shrugging:

the devs already talked about it a while ago but mobs are supposed to get stronger as we level, they even take less damage and have insane scaling armor or damage reduction, or whatever the devs call it

so yes, you getting weaker as you level is by design

currently the scaling is absolutely broken since your entire character power doesnt come at all from leveling, but from gear
you get a lot of loot but its all mostly worthless trash and salvage fodder, coming by actual upgrades is pretty rare

this hurts the player even more, since the faster you level the faster you will feel how weak you are becoming

Read that again. What is the point of LEVELING then?

There are all the side quests and the dungeons. And the Tree of Whispers.

Kind of a hot take, but they should go the route of Destiny 2 and remove the leveling system entirely. Bungie recognized a long time ago that level scaling doesn’t work and subsequently removed the leveling system in exchange for an expanded gearing system. Destiny 2 might have a lot of issues but this is honestly one the better parts of their game.

no RPG was ever meant to be easier as you level up.
The difference is that some games allow you to kill poring in the same garden, like Ragnarok.
While Diablo is all about hell’s hordes.

if you’re feeling weaker it’s because you’re choosing the wrong items, you’re not upgrading, maybe building wrong, pressing wrong skills, many factors.

I was incredibly OP with my extra skills from
Renown I literally just ran around blowing everything up and doing the events I came across, haven’t done a dungeon yet but yes you could, and someone else suggested asking a clan member to boost me in a NM dungeon

In a normal RPG without scaling you can farm the previous level or other lower areas until you find new upgrades. In D4 every single area and spot will level with you, so you can screw up a lot easier. It’s a design flaw and prevalent in so many games with scaling.

75 feels no different than level 1. That is the problem with this game. I have never felt more powerful the whole time I have been playing. It is just the same shiz over and over again against the same mobs who never get weaker if anything they get harder to kill if I don’t find any upgrades. It is just a slog with no actual reward.

You get new skills/upgrades and better equipment.

You have the tools to stay ahead of the leveling curve.

So leveling is pointless. Thanks for confirming for us.

I’m confused why people want content to be so easy they could faceroll it. The content SHOULD be challenging. The scaling is so good.

At what point does a huge demon with an even bigger weapon stop being a threat to you as a flesh sack? Why wouldn’t they always pose a threat?

I think a lot of people bought Diablo IV but what they were really looking for is Candy Crush, lots of fancy effects and explosions with no risk or challenge. Then they want to ruin Diablo IV and make it more like Candy Crush? Get out of here. If you just want more Diablo 3, the game is that way ===>

Real Diablo fans remember that 1 and 2 were difficult and Diablo 4 is a return to its roots, shying away from that blight on the franchise, 3.
