Hi Folks,
I’m an old guy; hitting 70 next year. Plenty of game experience, but my hand/eye coordination, reflexes, etc., just don’t have the stats that they used to.
I just hit level 25 with my companion Druid, but I’m finding it harder to complete quests and handle Elites.
In other games, I would grind in an area a level or two below me, increase my stats, and move on in the story. With level scaling it’s different. If I keep grinding through Act I, will my additional skills and gear level make it easier eventually, or do the mobs just adjust to your power level, and get proportionally tougher? I don’t see me making it through another 25 levels solo at the rate I’m going (casual player).
Thanks in advance for any feedback,
Sandsifter

Do you pick up gear at all? Or are you just moving along the road through the campaign? Shouldn’t be hard to find loot after killing a few mobs there and there. Even if the gear are blue. That should be enough to get by.
The mobs adjust to your level pretty much until you get to end game and Nightmare Dungeons where their level depends on the tier of the dungeon. I didn’t really experience a big issue with mob scaling that people have complained about. I think the most important thing to solve this issue is make sure you are always using the best weapon available to you. Not just in the item level and dps it puts out but in the affixes it has to make sure it pairs well with your build. Should not be too difficult as weapons seem to drop at a much higher pace than armor pieces.
Play T1 instead of T2 if you’re on T2
Thanks for the quick responses folks. It looks I may have finally outgrown AARPG’s, or they outgrew me.
I’m playing T1, and pretty well geared up; a lot of upgraded rares close to my level ( I even have a legendary at level 25; that seemed like a very lucky drop).
Guess it’s time to go back to my turn-based roots. If I don’t do well there, it’s always a fault in my reasoning, not my reflexes.

Do you like JRPGs? If you like turn based rpgs I could suggest some excellent JRPgs for you. Let me know.
Player power scales faster than monster power. You’re doing something wrong if you’re having a hard time before WT4. You may just need better gear or a better build.
I’m not a min/max sort of player, so I always assume that my build is not optimal. I guess my problem is having to constantly kite, dodge, and renew my skills at the right times.
If the alchemist had an “Anti-Age” potion, I’d buy that in a heartbeat

There is no leveling to make things easier in this game like there is in most rpgs. Leveling “up” actually makes your character weaker in D4, and is more of a punishment. Sucks for an rpg, but it’s what Blizzard thinks is best.
There is no character progression via leveling in this game, as (most of the time) you lose more damage/defense by leveling than you can gain from an individual talent. Monster leveling will almost always outscale whatever the best talent you have at the next level, unless that talent is a new skill that you will use constantly.
The main way to make your character stronger is to get good enough luck with gear to offset your loss in power from leveling “up”.
A lot of this depends on class and build, and what level you get certain skills, but for certain level ranges, there is simply no way to make your character stronger(without ridiculous luck).
I played a bleed barbarian leveling up in WT2(switched to Hota in WT3). In terms of max damage/defense, my character’s power peaked at about lvl 7-10. At that point I had gear in all my slots, and I could shred most elites with Rend. There were certain lvls where my character grew stronger(when I got shouts/ultimate), but I really never felt that I could shred elites faster than that until my early 40s. What really did it for me was the number of legendaries I started getting around then. It was enough where I could start salvaging them without regret and using those mats to imprint good aspects.
Once I got all my legendaries in the early 40s, leveling started making me weaker again until I entered world tier 3. A sacred weapon from my first WT3 hellfire gave me a massive spike in power, then I kept getting stronger over the next few levels as I filled out all my gear with sacred pieces. Then it was downhill again for a few levels, until WT4. The cycle repeats.
Once you get to 50 it gets better, as (at least for Druid) 4 paragon points will usually outscale the monster leveling.
Nah most arpgs don’t have level scaling. Try PoE or Last Epoch. I would recommend last epoch, as PoE is pretty complex.
With age, you come to appreciate when knowledge is stronger than reflexes. Raising armor and maximum life will go a long way in withstanding most challenges thrown at you (at the very least it will increase the tolerance for mistakes). Get enough renown to unlock as many potions as you can will also go a long way in getting through those longer battles.
Thanks poochy123, PoE is fun, but gets insane with the skill tree. Last Epoch is not bad though, but it’s hard to beat Diablo for an overall experience.
I think I’ll just try a suggested Tornado Druid build.
