I see the mind boggling number of complaints about how there wont be much to do, or its just repetitive, same as diablo3 blah blah blah. It’s a similar complaint from other games as well like WoW.
Like, am I fundamentally misunderstanding an ARPG? Almost every game I’ve ever played more than 20-30 hours on with very few exceptions has been because there is repetition or some kind of multiplayer PVP thats…almost always very repetitive as well.
What does an endgame look like where you get hundreds of hours of playtime but also doesnt have some kind of repeatable thing that you’re grinding for some kind of desired outcome? I understand there are good and bad ways to implement it but…man it really seems like just the concept of “You’re gonna do this thing hundreds of times for a chance at this specific outcome” has this extreme negativity around it despite the fact that has been the game functionally since its inception.
Please note, I’m not saying anyone has to enjoy that game style, and obviously many don’t and likely wont pick up this game/wait for it to go on sale to play through the story. But sure seems like a lot of fans of previous diablo games are very upset that this is…a diablo game?

Most I feel genuinely doesnt know what they want, mindlessly parroting streamers, or unable let go of Diablo2 thanks to far too heavy rose-tinted glasses.

From what I can gather, we all want the most immersive single player MMO experience with respecs that cost a lot of gold but not a lot of time. With open PvP thats’ opt-in. With a simple UI that can be fully customized up the wazoo. We want meaningful items that do fancy things but our skill points to do most of the heavy lifting. Crafting without needing to gather resources. The paragon board, but not the paragon board. Seasons where you don’t have to start over with rewards for starting over.
Also, we want Diablo 2, but not D3, but also not too much Diablo 2.

I hear you, and I dont disagree, but thats my thing about Diablo2…I played a ton of diablo2, ive watched people play diablo2, I’ve watched videos about diablo 2.
The progression and endgame is thousands of runs of what, 3-4 different places? Baal, Meph, and whatever is the place for Runes. Towards the end its mostly just Baal, like what am I missing here?

You are not missing anything, its a clear cut case of overpowering nostalgia.
Case in point, qqing for the lack of ability to alter stats while leveling. But qqing over being able to assign stats on paragonboard.
People doesnt know what they want. Its ‘cool’ to hate on Blizzard because they are part of Activision.

People have ridiculous expectations. Nothing will please them.

The problem is that people are paying money expecting blizzard to make their Diablo 4 and not realizing they’re paying money to play Blizzard’s Diablo 4. Where their Diablo 4 is a feeling and Blizzard’s Diablo 4 is a video game.

Special snowflake syndrome, aye.

People want the grind to be less boring is what it boils down to. As you said, it’s the point of the game. It should be enjoyable. The problem is that everyone enjoys different things.

Which is an ironic statement, considering that the ‘endgame’ of Diablo2 was nothing but endless grinding that they threw themselves at just fine.
Its nothing but nostalgia.

An ARPG end game is nothing but farming loot to get better loot. Its already flawed by design, and people are opposed to raids or difficult end game content to give them a reason to find that better loot. Don’t ask me why.
I want an end game gearing loop that’s shorter than playing D2 legitimately(thousands of hours), and longer than D3s cakewalk loot pinata.

Yeah D2 and D3 endgames are literally endless grinding of the same thing over and over and they are perfectly happy with those games.
Double standards anyone?

The point remains. D4 have the same loot hunt.
I hold on that D4 is a worthy evolution of the tired arpg genre instead of more of the same tired old formula without any shreds of new thinking in the design. We are getting that in D4.
People struggle dealing with change, but it will be more enjoyable in the long run.

If any of these whiners had the solution to what they’re asking for they’d be making their own multi-million dollar ARPG franchise and not here complaining about D4.

People want the shock factor. What is that? That is where you come across something in a game and its just so beautiful you can’t stop staring, you do a story up to a point where you must know what happens next, there is a new system that just makes gameplay so cutting edge that its unbelievable. The Diablo series was about the art of making a game.
D1, dungeon crawler with loot and stats. A world to fight against hell and demons when most of the world thought Diablo was the devil. Dungeon and dragon type dice rolls and the chase for the best items the game had by killing and looting.
D2, 8 player online multiplayer with unheard of characters, many ways to play and skill systems. Horadric cubes and builds that blew the mind. And my god the story leading up to Diablo…
D2 LoD, runes and the rune system, the next chapter of a smash hit. The druid (the skinny one that actually had lore tied to the runes). Tentacle freak baal on top of arreat summit…
D3. The speed. Diablo II on crack. It may not have been well received but the step up in fluidness of play and graphics was spot on. The infinite dungeon added later and the addition of the power of sets later made the game not only playable, but worthy.
Diablo Immortal. Unforgivable Trash.
D4. Trash part II.

There are legitimate things to complain about with the game. I think the beta was a lot of fun but it wasn’t perfect. So I can see why there would be some criticisms or suggestions. But some of the stuff people complain about is just wild. Like I don’t know how these people get through life. The struggle is real.

As I said, people do not cope well with change. D3 was rightfully too fast paced. So I in a way can understand why the zoomers may be repulsed.
But any flaws D4 have shown so far have been fairly minor in my book.
Does the game look like a 2023 Activision Blizzard masterpiece?
Is there anything innovative or exciting?
Is it anything close to what Diablo fans wanted or asked for?
I think the complaints are not only legitimate, but justified because the game should be underpromised and over delivered. This game should be 12/10. This isn’t blizzard north, some indy company with limited resources.
