Lag glitching during game

Running through the game I constantly have momentary lag spikes every 10-15 seconds, by glitching I mean the whole screen freezes for a second or two and then resumes the cycle. Here are the specs and if I’ve left anything out please lemme know what else you need.

PC Specs:
CPU: 13900k @ 5ghz running at 41C idle and around 55-60c under load with D4
GPU: 4090 Strix stock running at 40C idle and 60C underload with D4
Nvidia Driver: Newest release 536.40
Ram: 64GB
SSD: NVME SSD Western Digital Black 2TB
OS: Windows 11
Monitor: LG Ultra 49" 3440x1440p 240hz
Internet: 1gbps through Spectrum
Updates: All updates have been done, Windows 11, Nvidia, Asus through the armory crate and chipset updates.

You are possibly running into one of two scenarios:

The first being that which everyone is running into, VRAM issues.

The second could be card utilization.

Try this:

  • Go to the Nvidia control panel.

  • Open the 3D settings.

  • First, go to Program settings.

  • Look for Diablo IV. If it is listed, check each setting, they should be on Global settings.

  • Now, while under here, look for Power Management Mode. Change this here to “Prefer Maximum Performance”

If you do not have a profile for Diablo IV, then you can change that setting on the global side, but it will take affect for all games.

The reasoning behind this, is the card in your system may actually need to be tricked into a higher power band in order to keep it from actually throttling itself based on load. Since the game uses a LOT of VRAM interaction, it may not be utilizing the GPU enough to keep the power up and running smoothly.

At least that’s what I’m thinking here. I know this was mentioned someplace earlier, (I haven’t found that source yet) but it helped them, and they were running a higher end card as well.

The setting route didn’t work, I setup a whole profile for the game. I’m assuming at this point it may be the VRAM issue.

Well, it was worth a shot. I know you have plenty of computer there, so capability isn’t the problem. lol

Yeah, the computer definitely isn’t the issue. I don’t know if it’s server-side or client-side.

Well, if its VRAM related, its been problematic to troubleshoot. What you describe sounds like this, since you are saying its freezing every so often. Network issues usually cause rubberbanding or issues of running in place, that sort of thing. You can jump around on the screen, monsters or you suddenly die, that sort of thing.

Wait.

There are simpler things to try first here though.

Try this first:

Exit the Battlenet app when you start the game, or set it to exit on launch of a game.

IF that does nothing, then lets reset the game profile.

To do that, go to Documents\Diablo IV. Rename the LocalPrefs file found here. Re-open D4, that will force a reset of the game defaults. This will also reset the game settings. You will not lose characters or progress. Play with it at defaults to see if the issue goes away.

If not then go to the game settings:

Disable Nvidia Reflex, Peripheral Lighting and make sure vsync is enabled.

If no change then,

Disable DLSS, make sure scaling is set to 100%.

If still no change, then,

Set an FPS cap for both foreground and background. Set it to the same value as the refresh of your monitor, or say 5FPS above the refresh.

If that does nothing then,

Drop the settings from Ultra to High. (after resetting the game defaults, it may already be on high)

See what those things might do first, or if one of them will straighten it out.
