Itemization is still bad

I wish D4 would just port the D2 itemization over. Doesn’t anyone at blizzard understand how amazing the itemization of D2 is? You spend all this time and money making a game that nobody wants to play because the items are trash.

It isn’t just about porting items over…the items here would not be that bad if they were just relevant with player progression.

If they ported itemization from Diablo 2, they would have to rework monster attributes, level scaling, completely rewrite the ruleset for affixes for greater depth and more, essentially asking for 3/4 of the game to be remade and expect the playerbase to not complain for 1-2 years of work it potentially can take to do all that, while it remains inaccessible for play.

Diablo 4 doesn’t need this from Diablo 2, it would break the game and set these forums into flames in my opinion.

Im very optimistic regarding itemization. It only took the team 2 years to implement the first unique crossbow. Im sure in the near future we or our childrens children may say:“DIV Itemization is so good. Every day i wonder what would drop next. AND HOW AWESOME THE WEAPON WILL LOOK.”

It all will be good at the end.

People don’t realize how many other systems tie into the itemization of D2. It’s the equivalent of telling a mechanic to just throw an 8 liter engine in the back of a Volkswagon Bug, it’s not gonna work.

And Necro got a unique Focus. This game is really going places.

So how many bots and burner accounts does it take post the same bad idea over and over again? Several in a short period is making it obvious.

Just stop.

Any previous idea or copy/paste content is a BAD IDEA for D4. It needs new, original and creative ideas.

If I want D2 itemization I will go play D2. Sounds like that is what OP should be doing.

What part is good about it?

The combat is really bad too tho. Its all Korean MMO Piano for almost every classes meta end game build.

Yes, I agree Itemization still needs an update. First we need more item diversity. There’s a current lack of general uniuqes. Blizzard needs to add at least 2 general uniques for each item slot. This will add to build/item diversity and these uniques should have kiss/curse that give powerful buffs and a puzzle that needs to be solved.

Second is that the game needs a deeper crafting system. Fixing masterworking and tempering is a low hanging fruit, however I suggest that the game needs a horadric cube like system.

Third is that the game needs more runes and more stash tabs to put those runes in.

Fourth, Mercenary skill trees need more depth and longer tail end progression with more branching options, the ability to stack skill/passive ranks and if possible the ability to equip items on them.

Fifth is that D4 needs to see the return of seasonal powers in the form of legendary items and alternative jewelry socketables that give passive buffs at the cost of armors and resistance.

Sixth is that the game needs new item rarities like set items and a permanent/balanced return of chaos armor.

Seventh is that they need to do away with this distinction between ancestral and non ancestral item. They need to make all items that drop in torment to have the same IP800 and can be masterworked to rank 12 and have 2 tempers, band go back to RNG on some of these items having GAs.

Yeah, I find it weird that they went from L720 items straight to L800 with GA. Why the gap where L800 without GA neatly fits into? I often make them myself by enchanting the useless GA off an ancestral. Especially useful for weapons, for the higher base damage.

And the guys at Blizzard know if you want D2 go play it. This is d4. Huge amounts of casual players would leave if we had D2 itemization.
Go back to your 20 year old nonsense and stay there

The items are that bad.

It would fix the game and the millions of lost fans would return. Time well spent.

And what new original creative content is in D4 right now? The game is a copy paste of all the worst ideas that have came after d2. When something works you need to embrace it and change it to the better. Not make it generic and slap a label on it.

I do not need D2’s items, but the devs should have learned, should have implemented the grand design and improved upon it. The game is still popular to this day because of it’s itemization.

Take this example. In D4 you find a white helm around level 20, often it will just be ignored or junked. It is useless. Maybe you also find a rare helm to be used for a level or two, then junked. Along the way you find all these useless little “crafting” items, but crafting really doesn’t exist does it. They have a gambling system. Along the way you find magic items, and as you level they are just useless drops to be ignored. Eventually you start finding Legendaries, all with 4 RNG affixes. Maybe you eventually find a unique, but they are not really that unique and often the affixes sound great on paper, but really have little impact. This entire journey you do not find a Mythic, for that you need to run countless bosses, over and over ad nauseum.

The old system, maybe you find a white helm. Could be worthless, could also be valuable to socket. Maybe its ethereal and already has 3 sockets…perfect helm for your merc. Along that journey you find magic gloves, awesome because the right glove is perfect for crafting or collecting to trade to crafters. This game has an actual crafting system that can create items with affixes not found in the game on the same items. You find rares, some of which are low level…but the stats are great, and you are happy as its an item to trade to low level duelers. With luck you could find that godly rare with amazing stats. You do find a unique or two. Eventually you know exactly which uniques you want because the affixes on them can make or break your toon. Even better, some of these uniques can be find throughout the game, not just at end-game difficulty. They enhance the journey.

The point is with D4 there is no character development, and most importantly there is no journey or evolution. Instead it is a quick rush to top level, then all about finding gear. But the gear we find is just RNG upon RNG upon RNG upon…ad nauseum. Key difference finding an item that you know will be good before even looking at it. Another key difference is how that item will impact or change your character. In D2 a sorc that finds a “Shako” is happy because that +2 to skills will have an impact. In D4, that “Shako” maybe a rare mythic that due to its low drop rate has some impact, but does not fundamentally change the toon like its predecessor . In D4 most of the drops are all junk, in D2 most of the junk is usefull and has purpose. That is the system I want. I want a system where a ring drops I might get excited to see what it is, as opposed to the draining “oh look more junk to salvage”. D4 gave a lot, a lot of items, affixes, etc… but it was too randomly thrown together, too much of everything thrown on the wall to see what sticks. The game itself invites RNG, and players accept RNG, but there is a breaking point where too much useless RNG is not good.

Care to elaborate how it will fix the game?
Diablo 4 definitely still needs work on its itemization but…

…Diablo 4 inherited some flaws and issues from copy pasting from Diablo 3, its just something we will be stuck with as well unfortunately.

I’ll just post this here:

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/d4/t/d2-itemization-in-d4-would-improve-the-game-immensly-thoughts/230033/150

I know that thread is gone more over the place but hate repeating myself kinda tbh (but for saving reader’s time here’s a TLDR)

  • Don’t think there’s a “right thing”, just implementations that don’t fit well and obviously wrong that needs to be fixed
  • I don’t think games do or should copy one another but they should FIX what doesn’t work in them and frustrates (In case of D4 we all know what it is Tempering and MW)
  • Fix the crafting systems and perhaps people would realize that the system might need a small nudge here and there and not an entire overhaul

Won’t most D2 items would be weak when ported to D4? I assume port means just drop it as is? It’s like porting a game in one platform to another platform. If you are gonna change the game, then it’s no longer a port
