Issues with Frame Generation

The newest update enabled frame gen again and while testing it, i encountered annoying issues. I noticed very bad frametime issues and stutters, especially when switching locations and/or opening and closing the map. Its very bad and noticeable. Turning frame gen off, fixes these issues entirely. I dont think frame gen is fit for use.

I don’t use it anymore since i disabled RT anyways but i tried it today and when closing a vendor screen it stutters like crazy for a sec. Huge frametime spike.
4090, 5800X3D…

Yea it actually makes things worse. Kind of missing the point.

Welcome to the World of BlizzCraft, where lowering the renderscale to 33% kills your FPS

agree this has been a issue since last beta

Just wanted to post what I have been seeing:

Since it was re-enabled, I went back in and fully enabled Ultra RT. (turned everything on)

Running DLSS @ DLAA
1440p
100FPS Cap on a 165hz monitor
Frame Gen
HDR
Full crossplay enabled
Ultra RT (everything max/enabled)
Still using driver version from Jan 31st of this year.

Game is turning 100FPS most of the time again, similar to how it was before this whole fiasco started.

Map fights, world travel, teleporting, things are fine.

However yes I see some FPS dips, when visiting vendors or the stash, etc. It will drop to 50FPS for a moment, then back up to about 95-97FPS. And stay there till I close the vendor/menu/etc. Then jumps to 150FPS then quickly back to 100FPS. It never did that in that manner, though it always could dip for a split second sometimes, which I felt was normal. Now its just more obvious. Now it can give you a small stutter when happening, but its brief.

I think the dips may be related to those that are actually getting full stalls/freezing.

So it is being… Weird?

But its playing pretty smoothly, even when dipping. Though if I monitor the in-game latency I can see that latency shoot up near 15ms during the vendor visits instead of the normal 8-9ms everywhere else.

Update:

Did a video of my game play, from fresh start, run down of settings and blip around in the game for a few minutes. Keep in mind, the results are a bit worse probably because I was recording while playing, I’m sure that had some impact:

I noticed a couple hefty stutters when you were running through the first town.
Stuff like this really annoys me so i rather enjoy the game without RT and FG, feels much better to me

Yeah, and it was playing better last night. I will do another test later when I get back from my work running around.

I know it plays better than that, so I think the recording actually hurt it a bit to be honest. Will check into it.

For me, Nvidia Reflex causes bad stuttering. Considering Reflex has to be enabled, when frame generation is enabled, it could be that causing the stutters. Do you guys get the same stuttering if you just enable Nvidia Reflex, but not frame generation?

Reflex works fine for me in every other game but in D4 it’s bad stuttering. Even with Reflex off my game stutters a lot lol…

ya FG still broken maybe new drivers will help in the future.

It’s amazing how this has been an issue since the game has been released and they clearly have no idea how to fix it, even though loads of people have submitted logs/data.

No. No problems here.

Yeah, one would expect that Nvidia has interest in it getting fixed too because of bad word of mouth.

But then again, NV also had a showcase trailer for The Day Before

Frame Generation isn’t working anyways, just leave it off.

Check your FPS with it on and off and there is 0 difference. I think the patch “Enabled” it client side to be checked off but server side it’s still off. This may explain why people have weird issues with it on. Blizzard never fixed it.

It’s working for me, except i don’t use it anymore because i only need it with RT on and that’s just not worth the downsides.
I prefer playing at a locked 138 FPS with DLAA for best image quality

Update.

Finally got some time to run some testing:

Here in this video I narrowed down one RT setting that had the largest impact on the game performance:

Essentially, Ray Tracing for Shadows is the main offender here. By scaling that back to “low” and leaving everything else there enabled and on highest settings, you can clearly see a difference between my previous video and this one with regards to performance.

Plays much smoother, and a lot less “hitching”. I demonstrate that just increasing this to “high” is enough to impact the performance in this video.

But its still sad that a card as powerful as a 4070 Ti Super and higher can’t run this game at 1440p with maximum settings. That’s just absurd. And I’m running a 4080 super, and some are running the 4090 and still having some performance issues with this game at 1440p/4k and max settings with a reasonable frame rate result.

But at least now it plays like it did before this Season started and the whole frame gen thing was broken.

BTW, if I turn off the frame gen, the game performance really tanks with RT enabled. Talking low to mid 50s for FPS! Ugh.

Enjoy.

Strange, the last time i tested the settings, before they disabled FG for the first time, the RT reflections caused the most stutters for me.

Had them turned off, everything else on max with FG, but it was crashing when teleporting and sometimes when just opening the map.

Also don’t forget that RT is VERY heavy on the CPU in this game.
You can clearly see this in Kyovashad where the GPU load drops alot lower with RT on compared to RT off.

Yeah, not sure why they keep offloading it so hard. Thankfully I have an i9, but not everyone does, nor should we need one to play a game.

Games should be able to run perfectly fine on an i5 and up, and similar with AMD Chips. They shouldn’t need a top tier chip to run well. Period.

The GPU is supposed to do the heavy lifting.

The game barely runs at 30 FPS with RT on on consoles
