Maybe I’m not seeing it, but what is the point of the “eternal realm”?
Devs have spoken about season 1,2,3…etc being pretty close together and having 4 a year. So no on between “break” as the following season will be already “in flight”.
Ok so what’s the incentive of playing your launch character? Is it just to beat the game and just restart every 3 months?

Honestly for some of us who play seasons there is no point. I will pretty much never go to the eternal realm again once seasons go live. Only time I might is if I feel like playing and there is a window of time between a season ending and a season beginning. But otherwise I will probably never look at my old seasonal characters again. But some people grow attached to them and want to continue to play with them so they give them that option.

Eternal Realm exists for three reasons. One, storyline - there will be nothing with the main questline in seasons. Going forward, we may see a preview of the further story in seasons but the full story will only be on Eternal Realm. Two, gear - Uniques (plural) will only be “easily” available through the Eternal Realm. As of now, they are rotating Dungeons with the seasons. So, if The Butcher only appears “randomly” that may or may not be a feature of that season or it could be that the spawn chance is less. Getting legendary gear may be more difficult for a similar reason. If you have no reason to visit the Fields of Hatred during a season, you will miss a chance to get guaranteed legendary gear. Similarly, that means Sacred and/or Ancestral gear may not be available as well. Three, it has been stated multiple times that you will not have to level to 100 in order to complete a season. So, you will not get to any of the End Game content or if you do, you will not have as long to explore, etc. that content. This means that if they add stuff to End Game, it may appear in seasons first but the full extent of the additional content will only be available in the Eternal Realm.

This isn’t true. Once you complete the campaign you can opt out of it in the seasons but you don’t have to. It is still there. And in fact they mentioned today that the seasonal activities only start happening once you finish the campaign if you decide not to skip it.

I am sure the people who like doing the same thing over and over will enjoy them.
My plan is to run the same class on seasons until I can put together a full BiS of that class on eternal. Then I can test how well that class plays against the top level content if I want to.

If the max slots is 6…wouldn’t that mean eventually…you would have to delete your eternal realm character to make room for your seasonal character?
After 6 seasons…well have a rotation of character deletions lol unless you don’t participate in seasonal play I guess…
Time will tell but so far I just don’t see how this is different than d3 rotational play.
Thanks for the comments so far
The key point is you must complete the campaign before you can opt out of it. So, if you do not do this before seasons began, can you even do seasons? Also, you do bring up a good point. When they have expansions, will we have to complete the expansion content before we can skip it during seasons?
If you don’t complete the campaign in the 6-8 weeks before the season starts you will have to complete it on the seasonal realm before you can start advancing through the seasonal quests and rewards. Shouldn’t be difficult though. The campaign is over at about level 45-50 and we made it all the way to 25 in the beta. Even if you play pretty casually you should be able to get through the campaign in 6-8 weeks. With expansions I would assume you would have to do at least any new acts before progressing the season but way too soon to be thinking of this.
Not a bad plan. .
In other words…make your main druid at launch.
6 weeks later start over on a druid but call it “season 1 druid” transfer the stuff to your main druid at the end and delete season 1 druid lol…
Rinse and repeat until your OG druid is balling

Has Blizzard formally announced 6-8 weeks before the first season? I’ve seen a few dates floating around the internet, the earliest being June 20th and the latest being sometime in September, but none have actually been from Blizzard. The only thing I’ve seen is “a few weeks after launch”, but “a few” could mean just about anything.
I you have seen a date (or even a rough date) from Blizzard, please point me to it!
no, the game is all about seasons if you have not figured it out yet.
Any character in that “eternal realm” is trash and you might as well delete them like the skum they are.

Also…what if someone doesn’t have the expansion…and wants to do seasons? My guess they can’t.
You will be able to do seasons just fine, if you dont have the expansion, its not something blocking you.
Well see.
For now, time to kick some demon butt lol
I’m gonna play it the same way I did d3…not join seasons after like 20…and just gear up my main in the eternal realm.
Season may get old after 20…we shall see
The eternal realm is just a psychological trash bin for characters that you build in seasons. It’s better to tell yourself that you can keep the characters somewhere than to just have them all auto-deleted at the end of a season.
Without this purpose, they probably wouldn’t even have eternal realms. I know some people like playing on them, but they are an extreme minority.

Yeah.
Its like your windows “Recycle Bin” a garbage can for trash. You can let the trash pile up or just delete it to keep it clean.

I was one of those minorities.
Doing end game of hours of d2 and maxing my character and getting the best gear. Never did ladders and enjoyed the hunt.
Now he hunt is only for 3 months before retrying again…I guess it’s ok. Until about 5 restarts…
But at that point I’ll just play on eternal because I like the hunt too much

I really wish they would allow the Eternal Realm to gather ALL of the items obtained during a season in sort of its own transmog like inventory, where you can equip all the different best of the best items and even the seasonal borrowed power items.(D3 just yeeted them off your character at the end of season).
Would give the players a chance to uber play with all the powerful items at once, test builds with items they already obtained, so they can figure out what items they want to aim for.
