Is there a difference in the dmg outcome if both damage to close and crit damage tempers are 125%-170%?
As a shred druid, if I crit, the additive damage will equal the same won’t it? I’ll get the x50% for the base crit then I’ll add either the crit damage or close damage to that. Am I understanding this correctly?
You need to factor in other mutipliers that affect crit dmg, like Grandfather
That said, if you dont crit, dmg to close is that much better
So, since Druid has Envenom (x30% crit dmg to poisoned enemies), I’ll get more out of crit damage than damage to close?
I was imagining, we would get the crit multipliers and then dmg to close or crit damage gets added on top of it equally since it’s one big damage bucket.
Unless you are always in close (melee) range of your target, you will want crit damage. If your build calls for close damage, pay attention to how much it calls for since virtually all non-DoT builds want some crit damage as well, which is why you’ll most often see a mixture of the two where possible (this is in general when factoring crit damage and another type of conditional damage).
Do note that DoTs (poison, shadow, fire) do not crit, although they can trigger conditionals that do crit. The damage buckets supposedly got simplified, but they actually ended up being more confusing due to how the base crit damage and any additional crit damage is calculated.

There’s no difference. They’re both additive. The only difference is which one you’re going to proc more frequently. You want to pick whichever one you’re going to be applying that additive damage to the most often. If you crit frequently, that additive damage would be applied more frequently as well cuz it would apply to close or distant enemies for example.

So while levelling and I don’t have max crit chance, close damage will be better. I will be shredding or mauling in close range. In later levels, there still is no benefit of additive crit damage unless it’s a higher percentage.
