Is it really worth playing Diablo 4 if you don’t have the Vessel of Hatred expansion? I am honestly curious of what the rest of you think.
game was “fine” before VoH and it’s still “fine” after
you looking to buy the base game? or looking to buy the expension? or both? or wanting to try the base game before buying the expansion? 
need just a little bit more info here 
(also what diablo game did you like the most, if any)

If you do not want the mercenaries, runes, continuation of the story, new class, new side quests, new dungeons, Tenets of Akarat, Kurast Undercity and the Dark Citadel co-op stay with the base game.

If your still unsure, maybe wait until the NEXT Expansion for a more complete game?

Can’t post on the forums unless you’ve actually purchased the base game, or received it through the Game Pass.

That is a good question. I know in WoW you just have to pay for the subscription + the latest expansion and you gain access to all the previous expansions prior to that. The only similar situation in a Diablo game has been the necromancer pack for D3, where you didn’t need RoS to purchase it. So no clue what they’re going to do here.

I have no inside scoop, but I would think yes you would need to have the VoH as the 2nd expansion will continue the story. They could easily offer a discounted price if you get both of them as a package.

I’m a sucker for expansions, not gonna lie. I bought the latest wow expansion even though I knew I was still over the game in the first fifteen minutes. I bought VOH even though I blitzkrieg’d the campaign to just get it over with, played a spiritborn for all of three weeks, hate runes, and only feel like it benefits me when helltide/witchtide is in nahantu.
That said I’ll probably buy the next one but nothing before. If I can get more than two hours out of it I usually feel like it’s worth it. When it gets seriously down to it video games are like the rock bottom cheapest form of entertainment. As an adult in a world of adults, almost every other hobby is at least 10 times the price so even if I’m not entirely satisfied I will have spent far less. So it equals out. To me at least.
You are going to missing runes which are a huge draw. Runes are major parts of many builds.
You will be missing on mercs which I dont see as a major loss.
You will be missing on spiritborn which is a big loss.
You will be missing on nahantu region which has been bugged in helltides so no big loss there and the special things there just add region faction so no biggie.
You will be missing kurast bazaar and tributes which is a big loss.
You will be missing VoH campaign which is a big plus. Campaign was not good.
All in all a fairly big loss as runes loss is just massive. D4 is barely worth playing now with all the bugs and dupes and 0 class balance so losing all of VoH I am going to say no it is not worth playing.
Game is fine without VOH, you won’t have runes and mercenaries.
I don’t have it, got to T4 just fine, my own build not some exploit build.
The game existed without the new area for a year and half, the new area did not really add anything groundbreaking.
I say get it as cheap as possible to see if you like it. You can always add the expansion later,which again does not fix or address anything with the base game. If you don’t like the base game the expansion will not change that.

I’m actually making a return to the game after what I feel is a 6-9 month hiatus. Been mostly playing other games on Battle.net and Steam.

Generally this game changed to grinding grass mover with one button. You waste time.
VOH made diablo Pay to Win.
now some people might argue but it did.
if you didn’t buy Voh you’ll have no runes no undercity no mercenaries, you will mis out on the Big dmg numbers.
you will be short on skill and paragon points compared to other players of your same lvl.
they will hit for millions per blow: you will hit 1147 Crit…
immagine going in a pit with them or any other activity.
you will be kicked out of every party faster than you could join.

you will be fine aslong as you play solo, or with others that don’t have VOH.
you can’t keep up with VOH players that have more skills and paragons and runes and mercs.

Here is a video of me doing “no damage” in Torment 4 with no runes or mercs.
No meta build, no snapshotting. I have been in T4 since paragon 209.
As far as falling behind others, yes you will not have runes, and you will fall behind others if you are not on Bloodwave Necro, or playing the meta builds which use exploits, this is by Blizzard’s design this season and apparently every season so far. But you did not ask this.
I’ll leave it to you to decide who is “lying”. What do I gain if you don’t buy it? Go waste your money, I don’t care.
Meanwhile the marketing clown on the fake account is telling you it is now p2w and you should buy it or else…sound like FOMO? It is.

No it is not. Pony up the cash and join the game.
i played to 60 with 3 or 5 paragon points and since i dont have the xpac, it kinda sucks. I didnt get any runes and no uniques. I dont think its worth me spending money on this product until maybe the next xpac is released but honestly its not really playing this version without the xpac.
If your buddies have the xpac and they are in the xpac areas you cant tp to them either, its very watered down and just frustrating, so if you buy it - do yourself a huge favor and get the xpac with it
