Is it wise to put affixes on ancestral rares with desired stats?

It seems very hard to get legendaries with perfect rolls, so is it better to just try to get ancestral rares and put on an affix to upgrade to legendary? What are the disadvantages of that route, I thought maybe sometimes rares only have 4
different stats instead of 5?

Thanks for help, just trying to make sense of this I feel like the game really forces you to keep evaluating every single piece of gear to decide if it is affix you want to extract or try to reroll a stat or whatever, it is taking away from fun just scrutinizing every thing…

I thought this was the norm? It’s great if you get a usable Legendary. But until then, slapping an Aspect on a yellow makes it a Legendary. Why leave it yellow?

It’s intentional to get you to keep hunting for a better one. This is quite standard for arpgs where the rolls aren’t fully predetermined.

Approximate rolls are often good enough in this game. Perfect rolls don’t matter all that much.

Legendary items ARE Rares - The only difference is: There’s a Legendary Aspect on it.
If it’s a good solid aspect on a terribly rolled item: EXTRACT it and Imprint it on a much better rolled item.

I can’t say I’ve ever found 1 item that rolled as a ā€œLegendaryā€ and actually equipped it or used it for any significant time(minus leveling up VERY early on - I’m talking sub 30-40).
I just rip the Aspect off it and put it on a better item with stats I want.

Check ALL Rares.
All Sacred and Ancestral items(Rare and Legendary) roll with 4 Affixes. *Unless they’re from the ā€œUnique Monstersā€ scattered about the world. In that case they roll 3 affixes but lets not get confused…

Don’t discriminate between ā€œSacred and Ancestralā€ too heavily.
I am currently using 2 sub 725 Item Power items on my Rogue at level 86.
I simply cannot find replacements because they’re perfect and they provide much more than an ā€œok-ishā€ item of higher IP would provide.
*Note: For Weapons - Item Power is of penultimate importance so yes, you’ll always be looking at Item Power there.
Therefore…
Sacred Armors(All slots) and Rings can be end-game or at least help you through the loot hunt and leveling process.
Sacred items can Roll 700+ and hit the next break point of Item Power Tier = 725 via UPGRADING at the Blacksmith.

I don’t know what level you are currently but this is the breakdown of Item Power Break Points.
Tiers:
0-149
150-339
340-459
460-624
625-724
725

I listed the Tier Ranges for a reason.
If you have an item with Item Power 723 - It can be ā€œupgradedā€ to the next Item Power Tier of 725.
Use the PREVIEW WINDOW at the Blacksmith Before Upgrading to the next Tier!!!
A 100% perfect item can Brick hard and be ruined.
When an item is entering the next ā€œItem Power Tierā€ - ALL AFFIXES will be RE-SAMPLED and RANDOMLY REROLLED.
You will have the SAME Affixes but they will be randomly rerolled and this can and does often result in a far far worse item than you had before.
Just a warning here. I’ve bricked a number of items before I learned my lesson!

I hope it’s a bit more clear now.
The system and how it works, what to watch out for and what to be cautious with.

What you do depends on a couple of things.
If you get a Legendary with super good roll of the aspect, but the item itself is so-so, you have 3 options.

  1. Extract and put it on a rare right away. Upside = You get to use the aspect right away. Downside = You are stuck with that item until you find the aspect again with as good rolls.

  2. Use the item as it is with the aspect. Upside = You get to use the aspect right away. You can extract it later on to be used with a good rare that you can keep for the long run.
Downside = the item itself isnt very good.

  3. Extract it and keep it for later. Upside = You have it for later use when you find a good rare to make it worth to put it on.
Downside = You have to wait to be able to use it.

Was bored reading some things and saw this, and I want to say how they did this so called resampling is the biggest horse poo I’ve ever heard of in a game, all resampling should be higher stats since you are rerolling into a better tier, not resampling down to low roll. Who ever developed this system again doesn’t know math, matter of fact I bet 90 percent of these guys doesn’t this is how we get wonky retarded systems in a BRAND new title. Why upgrade to just fail unless its a chance game on the last upgrade either make it or you break it with some hard core grinds, but this isn’t it.

Yea it’s a double edged sword for sure. The ā€˜resampling’.
I’ve used it to get some great pieces and had some totally brick(in preview window - long since learned to check before I upgrade to 725 tier).

I don’t worry about it too much because that gear is generally temp anyway and personally I’ve had more good results than bad.
What bothers me more than anything else is that Sacred items seemed to have been coded/weighted to drop sub 700 at a much higher rate than appears to be statistically probable(from my personal sample size).
I honestly don’t get many 700-724 range items - kept track for a while…was around 5% or so vs the 630-699 range I saw at the time between 90-93(currently 96 and started keeping track of item power ranges again out of curiosity).

Ultimately - part of their design philosophy. Specifically ā€œKiss~Curseā€ as they call it.
For every good there’s a bad.
eg… Trading is allowed - buuuut ya gotta go 3rd party, register, take a pic(or enter stats), monitor thread, research values etc. Totally tedious and frankly wack they don’t have a trade platform in-game.
Rerolling is a thing! Buuuut the prices scale crazy high and they’re much worse for items with an Aspect(that we cannot destroy to revert items to Rare and bring prices down to work on the item…sigh).

As with the above - Upgrading to a new Tier is a thing - buuut yea. You can brick an item.
Give and take, good and bad.
I just let it roll off of me at this point.

Yes heres the funny part of this game for me, I was powering my shred druid and doing all content wayyyy before I should. Anyways as soon as I stepped foot into t4 I did the main boss and course I died, but I did it and got crazy nice items and those items for the first 5 world bosses was some I kept past level 100 and doing 100 nm dungeons with, all the other drops I got from world boss, events, rando world, and 100 nitemare dungeons were low lame 720-760 garb-AAAAAAGE and anything 800+ very very low rate and when it did it was either a garbage aspect roll that was drop only or it was just crappy affix rolls. Like I said first t4 run through is a lot of what I kept because it dropped at a 800 level.
