So, Steel Grasp, Ancients Oath, Unbroken Chain, Iron Maelstrom in S5. What other Skills to take?
- Flay
- Charge
- Rend (Not on Skill Bar - Ring of Ravenous)
- Iron Skin
- Steel Grasp
- Rupture
- Iron Maelstrom
- WA
You can spam IM without even having to take Ground Stomp. Not sure if it is possible or prudent to use Berserk Ripping to convert your Charges and WA to Bleed.
Alternatively, since you can guarantee your Steel Grasps to Stun, you could have fun with Anemia and Skullbreaker instead of Rupture and put GS in Rupture’s spot.
Going to make a S5 IM Build (maybe a CoTA one also). Would be nice to know if Ultimate Damage Temper is better than IM Damage or if that is CoTA only.
I made a half-assed IM build this season and was able to almost spam it without Ground Stomp and only 4/12 gear with no crits on IM cooldown.
The IM temper being additive is wack.
No doubt you can spam it this season. The new amulet will make it easier, but there’s a few issues I see already:
- Tying the cdr to Steel Grasp is dumb unless they let us assign a weapon to it.
- Using Ravenous with 2h mace assigned to Charge and using Frenzy or Lunging w/DW is the most efficient way to get max swaps, so Steel Grasp doesn’t even fit, even if we could assign a weapon.
- Ravenous takes away IM cdr and damage tempers.
- Amulet slot takes away a temper for IM damage.
- WA seems like it should be the go-to keystone, but IM has 60x crit damage, 20 crit chance, and inherent bleed, so GW is probably the way to go, while stacking crit, but in order to max crit, you need a Grandfather, so that takes away another IM damage temper.
- Unconstrained was noticably more damage than WA.
It’s all over the place. I want to make it work, but haven’t invested enough time or thought. The tempers being additive essentially negate any reason to even try.
That is kind of what I figured. IM hitting with 3 weapon types get you the swaps, but the damage is all over the place considering it is DD with 2H Bludgeoning with a Stun that barely lasts until the remainder of your IM animation, a Bleed weaker than Rend with a 20% DD component, and a weak DW DD AoE.
Ultimate Damage really shouldn’t be a thing and yes, Unique items are still very much messed up with how much you lose from Tempers. I think worst case you should be able to add a 5th Affix via Tempering because it is such an enormous hit losing those.
The IM Temper should be Multiplicative like Bash as should Ultimate Damage Affixes/Gems.
IM needs its base damage increased tremendously considering you cannot Rank it. It is an Ultimate after all. Unbroken Chain should modify IM Damage outside of Ultimate Damage and be added to the Aspect.
You should be Unstoppable while casting IM.
On a separate note, does the Enhanced IM apply to Gushing Wounds since it is Skill specific and does not appear on your Character Sheet?
They called out this unique for “Support Barbs.” I wasn’t even aware Support Barbs (or any Support class, actually) was even a thing in D4. I guess it’s like D3 where you used Ancient Spear (or Steel Grasp, I guess) and stuns to CC everything in high Pits for glass cannon builds?
I think what they are saying is you would use IM for Utility. Having it always up gives you an AoE Stun and Bleed conditional without taking Berserk Ripping or 2H Sword Technique is helpful. You can Mark every enemy for Paingorgers. It gives you 3 Weapon Swaps by itself so you can focus on just 1 Weapon and run Walking Arsenal. Steel Grasp gives you Vulnerable and Berserk. The newly buffed Legendary Node of Weapon Mastery would give you 24% (unmitigated) of your Fury pool at max.
Between these two Skills, you would have every conditional available and on demand to you. I guess you could pair this with either Rend or Flay as your primary attack pretty easily. Alternatively, unconventional attacks like Deathblow or Upheaval could all work with this.
There’s a support Barb build out there. They’re clearing 175s by buffing the shatter sorc.
They essentially just stack ranks of WC and group things together with Steel Grasp. In S5, they’re going to nerf perma flameshield, so IM giving damage reduction is now a support thing.
Dumb.
You can get it down to 24ish seconds with all the CDR, how would you spam it without ground stomp?
There might be something here. The damage won’t be there but that’s okay. Not everything needs to push Pit Tier 100.
Hectic, Flickerstep, Marshal, Harrogath, and swapping with Lunging and Frenzy. IM itself counts as swaps too.
I had it way lower than 24 seconds with only 4/12 gear. Was spamming it every 4-6 seconds or so. Sometimes less.

IM with Doombringer and Shouts?
No Doombringer. Lose a temper, aspect, and all that.
I was thinking for the zBarb Support. Would Doombringer, IM (Unbroken Chain), and Challenging Shout (with Passive) all stack?
The question now becomes: what do you need the massive health for?
For zbarb, yeah. It makes enemies deal 20% less damage.
Marking every enemy with pain gorgers doesn’t even work right with it. It’s 3 animations… And then what. U get 1 swing out of it?
The new amulet has up to 300% Ultimate damage base. That means a GA is 450. There needs to be some multipliers for this to be viable.
How do some of these devs still have jobs?
I may still try it in S5, but I don’t see anything that’ll make it work. Gotta use GF, Heavy Handed, Cleaver, and Mortal Draw to get the most out of it, but even then… wack. We need a legendary paragon glyph and an aspect/unique that gives us multipliers for Ultimates.
Ultimates don’t have Ranks and the Base Damage is pretty low all things considered especially for IM. Basics have Moonrise and Adaptability at least. In addition to all these changes, as you said, it needs Multiplicative Damage support.

At least allow all those different weapon glyphs to stack on top of each other. Just for the case of Iron Maelstrom.
I got the new amulet. Great rolls. Lots of uptime. Problem is IM damage is more suited to world tier 3. Looks neats. Does stuff. Just not damage.

Do you have IM damage on all possible rolls? GF? Heavy Handed and Cleaver? Maxed out Blood Rage? How much crit? What keystone? What glyphs? How much all damage? How much damage when swapping?
