I’ve played all the versions of diablo (yeah I’m old) normal and hard-core, but D4 has me totally confused. So many unexpected full health instant death for not clear reason. At least not an avoidable reason, like you’re packed in a tiny room with no ability to avoid any attacks and with full health you just die. Any ideas? Kinda ruins the game.
Most common cause of instant death - you are taking dot damage and get hit with a burst
Only really surprising stuff i remember is that frost enchantment, where an enemy suddenly vomits ice onto you without former warning.
All the other sudden and explosive dmg gives a ~2 second warning through some circle on the ground or similar.
There are actually a lot of explosions happening on the ground that are unnecessary hard to see. YOU can see them, but they’re obstructed by other visual layers and the explosions often have a faint, dark color, that can be hard to see.
You very likely ate one of these explosions and died.
some mobs & abilities have dot damage. good to see & hear as druid with earth shield or however tf its called. heavy ticks. Only recognized it because of the earth shield ticking dmg sound effect.
yeah its fugging bullsheet. the bosses are too tanky and you are better off outright deleting sigils for any dungeon that has a boss when it comes to nightmare dungeons.

Yup, getting this a lot, I even got an insta-death from my own merc Raheir, the text was right there on the screen …slain by Raheir.

Bosses All have instant death mechanics now, apparently. Sometimes I kill them without this happening. Other times, I’ll just die. I’m looking directly at my health globe with fortify, a barrier and ice armor all up at the time. This is not a weak sorc. She’s soloing these bosses within 10-30sec dependin on which boss.
As I’m watching this with shields, barrier, fortify, 6000 health, I’m suddenly dead. No barrier/ fortify drop (I’ve noticed I get actual health drop no matter where I am. With barrier and shield still showing over the globe) .
This is a bug. No question. Health is not supposed to be affected while barriers, shields, and/or fortify still have a positive value. Combining the values of all protective overlays adds up to about 10k. I have incredible DR. Enough that I don’t even pop shields except in high level end game content.
Whether bug or intentional mechanic, it’s BS. IMO it’s cheating on the part of the game. Oh no, you can’t win this fight! We’ll put in random 1 hits to keep them on their toes…

Lol haven’t seen this one (slain by (mercenary) I’ll pay attention to messages next time i die. Bugs like these , constant disconnects, etc are why I don’t play D4 HC.
Get your defense to 90% reduction. 1000 defense is max but if youre above 90% it helps even below 1000. Keep your resistances as max as possible. Fortify and barrier if you can. Use evade whever you see something on the ground. Kite the enemies around to kill a few at a time instead of all 200 in a group. When a boss teleports to you and lays down 4 lightning orbs and a fire aura, back off.
I actuator have close to 50% DR as a stat, 2 resists at 75, the rest 70. Armor is 1200ish, I’m a sorc- they have a Passives that increase max resists so mine go to 85 during combat. I have glyphs, para, Skill points, and Aspecs that heal while in combat, apply barrier, raise armor and resists will above maximums even with busses applying negative affixes durum combat, etc. I think I’ve only died 2 or 3x in over 100hrs on this chr. (Not including insta-kills)
Sorcs are arguably the best at damage mitigation since they melt if shields and other buffs get deleted. IDK if they get a DR penalty but it feels that way. (IE like class related boosts to dmg output and reduction inherent in the class) mages usually are soft in old school DND and in RPG electronic games .
That’s all beside the point of the OPs complaint and the issue at hand… 1 hit mechanics. They should not exist. Zap. Your dead. I’m God and it was your time. Unavoidable, surprise 1 his. And getting whacked by your Merc?? Lol.
Massive DR stats are paramount, I agree. But to do this just to try to avoid 1h mechanics? It doesn’t seem to matter anyways. Full globe, fully barriered, fortified on top of that. Good max health. You can stand in dur’s acit pools and take little vto no dmg…

I actually did it and died 3 times with my Spirit Born using Bis gear.
How to die?
- run a high tier Pit
- Stop spamming your attacks.
- make sure to get aggro from a huge pile of mobs
- activate “Hunter” skill and jump to the mobs.
If you are very lucky there will be a goatman or a big snake hitting/shooting you in mid air Very rare but can happen.

Spiders, snakes, wherewolves, vampires that all move at warp 10 while spitting endless chains of poison and fire patches on the ground that move wherever you do and span 2 rooms are fair. It’s supposed to be hard at apex difficulties.
My base atk speed is 34. With the constantlys s*it talking Varyana (she cracks me up) and an aspect making it nearly 60 during combat, plus teleport, and move speed of 192, firing off Ice Shard in packets of 5 plus frozen orbs plus whatever that core lightning Skill is that isn’t chained lightning so fast all you see is white lines and explosions everywhere, all the non-boss mobs either frozen, stunned, or immobilized, 3 familiars floating around doing the same things. Like Neo in The Matrix, “you moved like they do”. That’s fair IMO. I like the challenge. When it stops being challenging I start a new chr and see what build I can come up with this time.
If Smith could just wipe my code and me along with it on a whim then why watch? Makes no sense. 1 hits are a bad mechanic.

What I am seeing is deaths in the Pit for example, normally it say Player was killed by said monster. But instead it just jumps to where it says Time Removed for Death. Nothing about which player died or anything. These deaths are crap, and it happens mainly on my Barb, not my Necro which is interesting, and the other reason that leads me to believe its game related. If it were skill related it would likely be happening on both. Glad I don’t play Hardcore, I would have quit the game by now.
