Incorrect HDR black levels

Hi,
With PS5’s HDR being set to ‘on when supported’ and TV’s HDMI black levels set to auto, when I launch D4 all blacks are gray. I’m having to set the TV to low black levels or turn of HDR to have black colour being black. This is even before I log into the game and get access to brightness/black and white points etc. Other games don’t do that so I would like to raise this as a bug.
Playing without HDR is not really a compromise while playing with HDMI black levels set to low seems to crush some details.
Many thanks.

Bingo the color is crap.

I have a PS5 and a brand new Sony 65in OLED 4K yada yada bells and whistles. My new Television if you look at reviews has a tendency to be overly dark. How I wish that were the case with this turd sandwich. It is extremely bright.

Unfortunately I cant bump my bug topic nor can I make a new bug topic. Super smart thing to do for launch day on a bug forum, limit the amount of bug posts someone whos trying to help can make!

I am not liking this company more and more and that is mainly due to the fact that I havent owned a PC since Starcrafts Ladder (the original boys and girls).

im going to post this on your topic because i cant post it -

“USE THE WHEEL TO OPEN CHAT!”
“USE THE WHEEL TO OPEN CHAT!”
“USE THE WHEEL TO OPEN CHAT!”

its all i can see. i know it is not that big but because you already have so much for console to take away from immersion, this is like the straw that broke the camels hunchback of notre dam

Please say this is a bug and it is supposed to fade away after time.

EDIT - My television also supports true blacks. But this games blacks are light gray. What a God Awful console version

Yes, the constant ‘use the wheel’ message is not only annoying but also has a potential for burn in on OLEDs. I know there are other static HUD elements but why have another one.

Yes. The brightness settings on PS5, while using an HDR TV are difficult to dial in. I think I got them to a reasonable place by cranking the dark point to full and messing around with the other two a bit, but it is a very fiddly process and is still not in a place where it looks great. Sharpness also seems to do nothing.

So no have they responded to the bright grays that are supposed to be black?

Is the “USE THE WHEEL TO OPEN CHAT. I THINK YOU ARE THICK AND HAVE TO CONSTANTLY BE REMINDED,” message actually supposed to go away? Are you going to purchase us new televisions when the burn in happens?

Its crazy to see that in 2023 for a top compagny, they don’t know how to calibrate picture for HDR? lmao ? there are studio with less money which calibrate perfecly the HDR settings but not you ? blizzard ??

For me too on oled tv the black are washed…, I turn off the HDR on ps5 then for this game.

Its a shame for professional compagny.

I am a bit concerned this isn’t going to get the attention it needs. On an OLED screen the PS5 version just looks washed out. I’ve submitted an in game bug report but hopefully we will see this show up in a list of known problems at some point so we at least know its being looked at.

I’d hate to think all the acquisition shenanigans filtered down to a game level and influenced the priority of Playstation issues.

Concern for OLED TELEVISION bright grays that are supposed to be black as well as CHAT WHEEL MESSAGE burning an image into televisions.

Take the message down after the first minute of a loading screen. Dont coddle your audience.

There is definitely a problem, at least what the development team could do is report the matter, I played with an invitation key but I am thinking about whether to reserve the game now or wait for it to come out and see what happens.

Oh hey!

SIMPLE ANSWER I FOUND OUT -

HDR is not supported on Diablo 4 console version. I am pissed at myself for not remembering I had the same issue with Diablo 3 on PS4.

Quick easy solution is to go to your CONSOLE SETTINGS. Find where your HDR setting is at. Its probably on “Always On when Supported” or “Automatic.” Turn this to OFF.

Using the intended SDR settings makes the colors pop again. And though it sucks to not have HDR, its just a setting. Just a word. And if it looks and runs better, who cares?

Hey,
While D3 doesn’t support HDR it correctly doesn’t turn it on when console is set to ‘On when supported’. I can see this by checking my TV’s info section when HDR is present on PS5 main menu but disappers when I launch D3.
With D4 however - if the game does not support HDR then the client is still broken in that it doesn’t correctly pass this information to the console so it can automatically switch it off.
That said - depending on whether HDR is on or off the PS5 version of the game has different in game options for brightness which indicates D4 as a whole should work with HDR (at least menus are ready for it).
I have played it in SDR during last weekend based on the same thing you just said - it looks better so whatevs

Agree this needs to be adressed

Same issue here, things that should be black are gray even with HDR off in PS5 settings. Some ugly banding problems too.
Looks fine in PS5 menu and other games so definitely a problem in the game.

Pro Tip: On some Sony TVs you can set Black Adjust to High, it’s under Picture settings → Brightness. Don’t know what it’s called on other brands. First time I’ve had a use for it.

Hope this will be fixed. It shouldn’t run as HDR if it’s not HDR.

On Samsung it’s called HDMI Black Level and needs to be set to Low. But I don’t think it’s worth the hassle.
Blizzard acknowledged this and said they are looking into it (on a similar post in general console discussion).

D4 HDR is broken on PC too.

i had the same problem on LG CX. tried to enable AMD Freesync and set black level on -30. somewhat it helped a little bit but not much.
i hope, they sort it out.

it is looking way too much wash out.

Interesting, didn’t had any issues with HDR besides Loading screen for Dungeons the Gradiens looked bad but non ozher than that HDR was fine for me

If you had the issue on loading screen then you have experienced the problem I raised in this post
